I can respect the lack of funds for events such as the fireworks show, the BBQ festival etc. But considering this would it be to much to ask of the City of Emporia to join other cities in the state and allow people to shoot off fireworks on the 4th of July without worrying about a ticket.

Price of seeing Richard Old employed back at K-mart: PRICELESS

On County adds night nurse for jail

o.k. Jayhawker lets try it this way. First off this is a discussion about how much money the powers that be at the Sheriff's Dept. want us to think we are going to save (yeah right). Why are you bringing up the election? Before you gloat remember that just because Eichorn might be here for four more years doesn't mean Old will, give him a little more time to be seen for what he really is. Old makes the decisions at the Sheriff's Dept. not Eichorn and before to long somebody is going to get tired of it and Old may have to go back to security at K-mart.

Lawman it seems that people in this forum possibly know what they are talking about because they work for him, have worked for him or work with him. If you like the man as a person fine, leave it at that but please don't make any assumptions about him or his shirt stained undersheriff and their role with young officers or them having a good influence on them. Gary might be a very nice man but with all that has been said in this forum should tell anyone that he is not a good administrator.

This is all for opinion and that is all it is. Facts have been stated but mostly opinion. In my opinion unless you have worked for the current administration or are closely related to one who has you probably shouldn't be making assumptions about how good Gary and Richard are, because based on the way they have promoted individuals to higher positions within the department is enough for me. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Far from professional they are.

On Lyon County sheriff's race

Is the problem that no one wants to run for Sheriff because they think they can't beat Eichorn? Or is it quite possible that the current Administration has tainted the outlook of the LYSD therefore ruining the possibility of a good candidate running for Sheriff this go around.

Heck, there were probably two or three guys that recently left that I would have voted for.

No need to back stab just state facts. The officers that left with possibly the exception of one were already employed when Eichorn took office. They worked under Eichorn until recent months when it became apparent that he was running for office again. No one was fired all left on their own terms and were not pushed out by Eichorn. The obvious to me is that they worked for Eichorn for almost eight years but once they saw that he would be returning they began looking for other opportunities. In addition to the county's losses it is fact that the morale of the Sheriff's Dept. employees is at an all time low even quite possibly worse than when Hacker was in office. Perhaps the morale of the employees is of no concern to the public but one thing to think about is if the morale of the Sheriff's Dept. employees is bad, what kind of service could the public expect to receive due to poor administration. When Joe Public calls to report that he was the victim of a crime such as a vandalism, will the officer with poor morale do everything within his abilites to try to solve the crime. Even though the officer is a good person or good officer if morale is low then it would be hard to motivate the officer. There could be many examples of low quality service from the Sheriff's Dept. but that is just one. There have been many comments, ideas, and suggestions made regarding the Sheriff's Dept. in recent months and I strongly oppose the thought of the current administration being elected to another four years. Even if you were to erase the red flag of the recent departures of good employees than possibly consider these red flags. Why is it that there is a narcotics detective at the Sheriff's Dept. but no narcotics arrests or meth lab busts. Did all the meth labs in Lyon county pack up and leave? Kudos to the drug interdiction officer in Lyon County as that is a possitive form of pro active law enforcement but that was going on long before Eichorn arrived. Why in the world is there a county deputy that spends most of his shift patroling Emporia and taking minors to jail for possession of alcohol? Did the Emporia Police assign him a city beat? Why is it that not one soul that I have spoken with has one good thing to say about the undersheriff? I read the link about the drug scandal with his previous empoyer, YIKES!!! Many things could be said about this issue and there will be more to come but many other people have anounced that they are running for office but for some reason when it comes to the Sheriff announcing he is running again so many come forward to voice their opinion which is usually against Eichorn.

I have spoken up before regarding the Sheriff's Dept. I do know some of the employees and I do know that the comments by toninj are completely out of context and this person either is related to or friends with the Sheriff's Dept. Admin. or its supervisors. Its sad when some of the most prominent officers who have put so many years and work into this community have left or are leaving for other jobs when that possibly isn't what they wanted to do. However because of the Admin. and what they stand for that is the situation. So the Dept. is losing COPS! and will be losing COPS and keeping some COPS but mostly be keeping some who in the opinion of some of the people in this community are nothing more than yes-men who do what ever they have to do to keep their job except perform cop-work. It seems sad that the Sheriff is a man or limited words however when he does speak he makes bad comparisons and probably managed to tick off half of the readers. Talk about the situation at hand Mr. Eichorn, with your limited comments you haven't informed the readers of anything. in another article your undersheriff, (don't get us started on him), made a comment that this incident was somewhat common. MAN SLAUGHTER!!! Common!!! Would someone else please run for Sheriff....PLEASE!

On Charges expected in shooting

Posted on February 12 at 12:55 p.m.

Let me clarify something for you kst, my concerns are not with a majority of the patrol officers with the Sheriff's Officers because I am familiar with some of them and from what I've heard and seen they are good officers. However there a couple that I would not speak for. But my main concerns are with the Admin. and when I earlier commented about the Sheriff's Dept.'s involvement with the shooting this was due to a lack of partnership between the Police Dept. and the Sheriff's Dept. and from what I know and have seen is mostly due to the Sheriff's Dept.'s Admin, not the patrol deputies. (with the exception of the truck deputy I earlier mentioned.)
