There is absolutely no reason to kill the E-Verify system. We use it to confirm employment eligibility for all of our hiring, and have done so for the last eight months. The system does have its quirks, but seems to work a lot more efficiently than the old way of reporting social security numbers to the Social Security Administration. What we find interesting is that we have had many Nonconfirmation's, but not one has been contested

Hopefully the word is getting out that if your paperwork is not in order (US citizen or not) don't bother applying as you won't keep the job.

seriouslyfolks -

Admittedly, "Pro-smoking" was a poor choice of words on my part, but I still stand behind my comment that all those who feel they are being misrepresented need to put their money where their mouth is and run for one of the 3 open seats on the commission.

My folks live in Iowa which has enacted a state-wide ban. I've been up there several times since the ban went into effect last summer (July, I believe) and have yet to here a negative comment, nor have I heard of an establishment going out of business as a direct result of the smoking ban.

I was originally against the ban and would have voted accordingly. But after seeing the positive results in Iowa I have seen for myself the reason this ban is a good thing.

I continue to chuckle as I read the diatribes being spouted here. Many are fixated in how poor they are being represented, but the last time I checked there were no (let me repeat, NO) people running against the incumbent commissioners.

Now the rhetoric has moved on to the state level. Will we see pro-smoking opponents running in the next election?

Ok, we've now heard from but a small portion of the "throw the bums out" crowd. Where are the rest of you (use the search function if you have forgotten)?

Not surprisingly, quiet.

I'm not sure how to take a comment in the following article (see link below). Why threaten employees of cutting hours if the ban isn't overturned? Whether taken out of context or not, doesn't that amount to strong-arming a vote?

And just when you got used to the term second hand smoke...

My question is, if a majority rules in favor of the ban will those opposed to the ban be satisfied that this is/was an example of democracy in action?

Either way, one group of people will be unhappy with the vote.

"Does anyone know why the bio-diesel plant was scraped"

Mothballed is probably a more appropriate term, but this happening all over the Midwest. A combination of high bean prices and issues with financing (from what we've heard) are the reasons the plant construction has been suspended. The Gazette has had a couple of update articles a few months ago.

"and if the Hills pet food plant is still a viable project"

Still progressing from what I've seen - the building is finally coming out of the ground.

So it'll be the incoming Democrat administration's fault if the bail out sponsored and signed by the Republican administration doesn't work?

Seems like the conservatives on this board want to have their cake and eat it to...

I personally don't care who came up with this package (I'm as Centrist as they come), but I'll be pleasantly surprised to see either a good plan or a repayment in 3 months.

I'm really tired of the phrase "Too big to fail". I think it should be replaced by "Donated too much to my campaign to fail".

The Big 3 have been consistently under-performing for the last decade. They have not presented anything which would lead me to believe that a loan would help them survive. Instead I believe a loan does nothing but prolong an inevitable demise. Not so great for Joe Taxpayer - come March when they call the notes there won't be anything to repay the notes back with. I really hope this isn't the case, so Detroit, please prove me wrong.
