The problem is TENURE.I agree many teachers don't make enough money, but there are just as many making to much money. It really needs to be based on job performance and all these contracts being redone every year needs to stop.

As far as the track being fixed, I believe that is grant money. So not sure why that is being brought up here. It has nothing to do with teacher pay.

Blackshirt~ I believe hottopics is referring to the County Attorney's office as the court. If that is the case then they are accurate and you are wrong. Law enforcement simply does the investigation and presents the finding to the attorney's office. It is then up to the attorney's office as to filing the charges.

This case along with many others should make the people in this community eager to elect someone else when the CA position is up for election next. Funds are wasted in our county offices and it is time for some change!

I will be voting NO and not because I don't agree with a ban. I just don't agree with this ban. It is overboard; I think the best that can happen is for this to be voted out and the state to pass a statewide ban that is more reasonable.

I too have had interactions with Mr. Williams and always found him to be a pleasant individual. However, I think many of you on here may want to wait for the facts before passing judgment on the City, the Chief, and Mr. Zimmerman. If Mr. Williams was on leave for 3 weeks I feel sure that there are reasons behind the dismissal.

rbow: I do not think there will be a lawsuit; that is why the city employs an attorney, I am sure they were completely within their rights to dismiss.

Speculation had been brought up back when Mr. Williams was hired as to the validity of his credentials. From what I am hearing it has been shown that he was not truthful on his resume and did not have the background needed to be in the position he was in. That alone would justify a dismissal, but add in there that he is suppose to hold others accountable for not following the law and possibly broke the law himself?? All I am saying is nice man or not, I think the city may have done the only thing they could. We should all wait for the rest of the facts.

It surprises me that the Gazette is just now picking up this story when it has been making its rounds in the community for the last few weeks.

I have re-read these comments by mrwho several times and am in shock at the mind set. Please tell me that I am not reading comments that are so backwards as to condone 12 and 13 year olds having babies.

We do NOT live in a time that 17 year olds, let alone 12 year olds, are ready or responsible enough to have babies. Have you been living in a closet somewhere for the last 60 years?

The last time I had a conversation with an individual who spoke like this about young teens being sexually active; it was with a child molester. As a parent I thank the school system and agencies such a "Project Teen" for being involved and getting information to the kids about healthy relationships. Our household has always been open on the subject; however, not all households are and there is a need for this type of education. We have seen 6th, 7th, and 8th graders expecting babies, they are NOT ready to be parents, I don't care what mrwho thinks!!

By the way my great-grandmother had her first child at 17, my grandmother had hers at 18, my parents had theirs at 22, and we had our first at 23. I have several photos of my children with their great-grandmother. Worked out just fine for us to wait until we were mature enough to be responsible adults; we also do not have any divorces in there!

My pay comes through the state and I will not receive money until this matter is resolved.

Am I upset? YES
Do I want to put all the blame on Republicans? NO

What I do want is this mess to have a long term fix. Transferring funds here and there is a temporary fix that is not going to help me continue to get paid in the future. I would rather wait a week or two to get paid now and make some cuts in my own budget, if it means assuring I will continue to get paid as the year goes on.

The way I see it is Ms. Sebelius has not shown responsible behavior with our tax dollars and now someone is trying to hold her accountable. That in my opinion is NOT a political game, it is our politicians looking out for us.

I would agree with this as long as commissioners require the school district and community corrections to establish better guidelines for this program.

The way this program is currently working there seem to be several errors. These officers have harassed kindergarteners, which under the state of Kansas guidelines is not even required.

These programs have been in place for almost 10 years now in this district in one form or another and have made very little difference in the attendance of our students. With budget cuts where they are I would think there are many other places this money could be put to use. I would also think that an agency funded by the county should be putting money into the other districts in this county and not just USD 253.

Isn't the parade the first downtown activity? Shouldn't the article have listed the dates and times for that?

Maybe I missed it in the article, but isn't Lawrence's ordinance still being disputed in the courts?

On Lawrence ban goes smoothly

I've been inquiring a little about the drive behind this ban. In speaking with a friend of mine that once sat on Emporia for Drug Awareness’ board, it seems that this is a requirement of the Federal grant that the group receives. So Federal funds were at risk if they did not take on a project to "better" our community and this is the project they chose to take on, as there were even more grant funds available to them if they took on this project. Basically what it comes down to is the MONEY, federal and state money, paid by our tax dollars so that the government can tell private businesses how to run.

I also found out that it was necessary for them to take on this project as their last attempt at "bettering" our community failed due to the inability of the group to work with community members and be open minded. It seems they were working on an alcohol density project that would have restricted the number of liquor licenses issued in the city of Emporia. To bad that project failed as it would have been good for both the community and the businesses. It would have helped the current bars in place not to deal with the short term bars that come open take business from long standing bars, serve minors and then get closed down. From the sounds of it this project was run the same way...it was going to be their way or no way at all.
