Well he has my vote.... and good riddance to those that have left. I am sure he will do a great job of bringing in more competent deputies in the future. Some "house cleaning" was overdue in that department.

emporialifer: I love the example of avoiding businesses owned by jerks, wouldn't it be great to get that ban in effect! It is true though if we start here with a ban on smoking, where will it end.

momus: I think you have made some really good points; I am like you and as a non-smoker I am not passionat about this topic. However, I have to disagree about the size of this community having to be an all or nothing option.

Just for information for those of you that this is an issue that you want to take an active role. This website list cities in KS with current bans and what exemptions they have put in place. Many of these communities are the same size as ours. As I stated earlier I think businesses may need to get their own group together and do some research if they plan on fighting this one.

Create: Well said this is a matter of personal rights. It is also the rights of those that own the business.

As for my family we make a choice not to go to the businesses that allow smoking, but that is my choice. I would not support the local government pushing my choice off onto others.

Before the city officials make any decisions on this matter, they really need to look at what other cities have done. It would be crazy for them to go completely off this group’s recommendation. I don’t know anything about Mrs. Sauder and how she became involved, I do know about the other women though. They have spent several years now trying to push off their own values on the rest of Emporia, and tried to call it intervention work. In my opinion they have given a bad name to true intervention.

As a parent I choose not to take my children to restaurants that allow smoking as I am aware of what second hand smoke can do. Ultimately, this really needs to be the business’ decision though. With the state of our economy right now I think each business needs to be able to make decisions best for their business and not have local government dictate to them what they have to do.

It may be time for local business to work together and do their own research to fight this movement and what they want. It would be wise for them to look at other cities and the ordinances they have come up with. For example many have not included the bars and have put time restrictions on restaurants.

I too agree that Mr. Zimmerman has done a great job, and does not deserve the attacks that are going on here. I also have faith in the commission that I voted for that they will give raises that are deserved to city employees. There is not one person on the commission that I would not vote for again. I'm obviously not alone or they wouldn't be in the positions they are in!

Kstrebuchet: I am so sorry that my ability to stay at home and work bothers you so much. You sound like a very bitter person. I would respond to your oh so funny Ebay comment, but it really isn't worth my time.

My suggestion to you is to put the volunteer hours in that I do in this district and then come back and talk to me. I have children at each grade level; have served on PTO committees for the last 11 years, served on curriculum committees, calendar committees and site councils. I try to attend at least 4 to 5 board meetings a year. I research and meet with administrators each year as to the best teacher for my children. I read every other week with elementary students; I have served as a mentor to children in the schools.

I am sorry that it bothers you that I have an opinion as to the education my children are receiving, but you see I have a right to my opinion because I am not just sitting back doing nothing about what needs to be changed. Tell us what do you do for the students in this district?

It is the same as people who gripe about politics, but never get out there and vote.

By the way I live by two schools, I would like to know where all these teachers are that work weekends, and the parking lots are always empty on the weekend from what I can see! Many teachers that I am close friends with have the same complaints that I do. They are frustrated and wish they could spend more time with their students, these are the teachers by the way that put in the extra hours.

Kstrebuchet: I don't believe that the issue is things not sinking in as you put it, but rather that the statement "The students are STILL receiving the SAME number of instructional minutes they ALWAYS have!" is extremely inaccurate.

Our students are NOT receiving quality instruction time in this district and I know several teachers that would agree with that statement. And the district seriously needs to look at how time is scheduled. By the way I own my own business and work from home and have no problem picking my children up for early release days, in fact I spend a lot of time in the schools volunteering with teachers. I think your statement that people are only upset about having to "arrange your time in a way you do not appreicate" is way off. I know several stay at home parents that have issues with instuctional time and it has nothing to do with picking kids up early on Wednesday. I will agree STRONGLY with an earlier statement that the majority of our teachers are not making good use of this time on early release days or the time that they are pulled from classes to attend other things. Our student’s education is falling behind and the students are the ones being impacted here.

In theory this seems like a great effort. However, I have to agree with Kstrebuchet this town hall meeting is not going to change a thing.

It will probably be as poorly attended as the last one, just as all these "parent/community" meetings are. It is lead by a group that is so set in their ways that they are out of touch with our youth and continuously fails to reach out to them.

I never said that the deputies were dismissed I am well aware that they left on their own, because they didn't like what the administration expected of them. I said "Sheriff Eichorn is only guilty of cleaning house" in clearer terms, he has not fostered those that have had poor performance, but rather advanced those that work hard; he has made the changes needed to better the department, and set high expectations. This in turn has lead to a better work force with higher standards then those that have left. And no I do not work for the Sheriff's department or any other county department.
