"If it bleeds, it leads" - rule #1 in journalism.

I say let the druggies do as they please. If they want to pollute their bodies and kill themselves have at it. It'll save taxpayers a whole lot of money in the justice system and jails, and serve as population control! Its like gang violence, let the two rivals kill each other until theres no one left to fight. Problem solved! (realistically, yes I know this is not a good idea, but theoretically its genius - don't start yelling)

I'm confused, was the story to dispute the reason for having early release, teachers salaries, or the amount of work they do? Its anonymous, teachers are valuable and most of us would not want the job. However I’m pretty sure that teachers are well aware of what their current pay scale is and know about the time and effort that is needed for the job.

I think $40K is a pretty damm good salary for Emporia. I work 52 weeks a year and make half of that. In order for me to increase this wage I know that additional education will be required. I also know that I will be footing that bill by myself – same as teachers do and if my guess is correct any other field.

Early release is a pain in the arse. No I don’t think that I send my kids to school to provide daycare, I send them there to learn. At their ages that IS their job, just like mine is to provide for them by going to my job. When I have to leave my job early once a week that cuts into my work time and I have to then make that up during my personal time. Besides the obvious difference in duties I don’t see how my job requirements and a teacher are any different. We all make personal sacrifices for our job and my time (professional or personal) is not any less valuable than a teachers.

It became a right just the same as its a right for you to pollute my environment with your POS outdated car emissions.
Riddle me this - why is it okay to smoke in a casino, but chew tobacco is prohibited? At least the "chewers" are keeping their tobacco in.
Just pointing out how stupid some rules and laws really are. None of it makes sense.

IMO - improving distance learning programs is the key to the future. Ironically, I have spent the better part of this week alone researching various distance learning programs which will allow someone like me - a typical "non-traditional" student the flexibility to complete my B.S.

I would love to finish my educational career at the school where it started, but unfortunately this is not an option as I am not at a point in my life where a traditional brick-and-mortor school setting would fit my full-time employment schedule.

Internet based learning has come so far (the university that I am looking at even holds a formal graduation via satellite) and ESU is not keeping up. Offering complete distance learning degrees and more degree programs will make them a competitive entity in todays cyber world.

Consider this - If you could get an accredited degree in your spare time, after the kids are in bed and the dishes are done - by logging into your computer would you? Increase the technology and enrollment will rise.

Emporia just got bitch-slapped by the recession and everyone needs to wake-up! The noose just got tighter on lil ol' Emporia.

1500 jobs are not going to materialize out of thin air. At least 3/4 of these families WILL be leaving our community. When they are gone, so will their money. The money that helped go into our schools, roads, community programs, & parks. Money that used to filter into the local stores, restaurants, bars, movies, post office, rec center, banks, insurance agencies, and car lots. All that will be left is housing that the banks are repossessing due to defaults that no one else can afford to purchase because the price of milk has increased to $6 a gallon and gas so high that you couldn't sacrifice going to the store even if you had the $6.

Crime rate will increase and everyone will be hurt. IBC, Menu & Birch I'm sure are not far behind.

I've seen pictures of the great depression. it looked...depressing. Good luck to everyone facing the upcoming changes - family & friends - Take care of yourself and your family and don't let your pride or emotions get in the way of making smart decisions. Make sure that you are doing what's best for you, cause no one else is!

On The Daily Report, Part 2

Posted on December 26 at 3:11 p.m.

Heard a story once that at one time not so long ago a little company wanted to come to town and purchase that land that station 2 currently occupies. Unfortunately the city said "Oh no, for no amount of money are we willing to sell. This fire station is perfect and despite your HUGE offer we will not sell". That poor company had to then purchase space diagonally from that location instead. boo.

The real tragedy is that if they would have just sold the damn land the city would have had money to build a new dept. I would have never thought that common sense could be as difficult as teaching rocket science. I thought that this was a lesson this town learned from the "sale of the fairgrounds". What does stations 2 have sentimental value also? Is that why when the opportunity for improvement originally presented itself it was rejected only to be sought later and at a much higher cost.

* are kids taught and practice lock down procedurces within the Emporia School district for such incidents?
* How are parents notified?
* Where would one go to get ACCURATE information about your child if there ever was an issue?

can we learn anything from this incident or will it continue to take a backseat to - gasp - Holiday fitness and Somalis?

Wow - that's about all I can say- WOW. This is an eye opener for Emporia. It’s been said before with other tragedies and unfortunately will probably be said again, but IT CAN HAPPEN HERE.

I think the thing that disgusts me most is the cover-up. This happened weeks ago and we are just now hearing the seriousness of the situation? I can understand not wanting to create panic, but what about the missed opportunities? The missed opportunity to sit down and talk with our kids about the dangers of guns. The importance of reporting bullying. The obligation they have to report potential problems and help others who are having issues or are in need. The opportunity to create an emergency plan with your children.

Aside from missed opportunities, what about the chance for kudos. Everything worked in this situation. Everything went right. Why not celebrate the fact that everyone acted and followed procedure correctly and a tragedy was adverted? !!

IMO it’s pitiful and sad this situation was downplayed to the extent that it was. Even more pathetic is the placement of the article in the printed paper. Since when does Holiday Fitness, take priority over our children’s welfare in a tax funded school? Page 2? What a joke.

I see this as another example of how our government leaders try and pull the wool over our eyes to improve their image instead of taking the public best interest into consideration.

Kudos to those who did a great job of preventing the situation from escalating. Boo to the cover-up job done by city, & school officials and missed opportunities that it created.
