LifeGoesOn: You make some very valid statements, but you have some holes in your theory. Times have changed since the 50's. When I was a kid I spent most of the day outside playing only coming in to eat and go to bed and the occasional bathroom break. In todays society the kids would rather stay inside watch t.v, play playstation, or get on the internet. Laziness has started to make a big impact on society. For example, remember the lawsuit that a customer filed against McDonalds when he/she spilled hot coffee in their lap. This person knew the coffee was going to be hot, but because McDonalds didn't put on the lid and cup that, "Caution contents is hot" this person was awarded a large amount of money. People are trying to find ways to get money so they don't have to work anymore. This isn't the governments fault. We hear all the time about how the environment is falling apart. Just listen to Al Gore, do you think finding better ways to clean our air and reduce air polution is free. For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction. Let's say the population in Emporia was 30,000 twenty years ago and now it is 60,000. Street conditions lasted longer because there wasn't as many people driving. Now you double the amount of people driving and the city streets don't last as long. So repairs have to be made more often, in return more money has to be spent to make this happen. So how do they get this money to keep our streets driveable? By raising taxes!!!! Just think we could be like China and have the one child rule so the population doesn't go up. As far as education, when I was in school everyone spoke english and the teacher could move right along in class. Now the teachers can't move right along because there are kids in the class that don't even understand what is being said. Are you suggesting that the teacher leave these kids behind, so the ones that do understand can keep moving right along? One last thought, everyone in the U.S government was elected to his/her position by the citizens of the cities, states, and country. Maybe you might want to start blaming your fellow citizens for voting for the wrong person voted into office. That is how this process is started in the first place. I guess it is eaiser to blame the people that are in office instead of blaming those that put them in office in the first place.

I agree that not being able to shoot off fireworks in the city is a shame. Let's not forget there is always two sides to the coin. I see the same people making repeat posts about this topic. Yet, there are how many thousands of people in Emporia. Just because a handfull of people think the ordnance should be lifted, it doesn't mean that the rest of the city feels the same way. I remember at one time everyone wanted beer sales on sunday in Emporia. I couldn't find one person that was against it. Yet, when it went to vote. The citizens of Emporia voted against it. Maybe that is what needs to be done with the "No fireworks in the city limits." Let the citizens vote on it. A person can stand there and agree with everything you say just for the sake of not getting into an argument. But when they are behind closed doors their opinions change. That is what makes us human.

I responded because I actually read the comment to editor and editor was not the other user name that I thought you were referring. I use several computers throughout the day, not all being at my home.
You were the one that got all cranky and brought up the fact that I was using separate user names.
Any ways, I'm sorry that you are not satisfied with the City and County response to your animal problems. I know it is fustrating for the public and probably the City and County workers as well. I wish there was the funds to provide 24 hr Animal Control, but in reality there is not enough money.

Kstrebuchet....correct me if i'm wrong,
wasn't your animal problem in the county and not the city?? and if that is so why are you complaining about the city animal control and police chief. u do know that even though they share an animal shelter, the city and county have their own animal control officers.

Were does society begin and were does it stop? China has already banned more than one child in a family. In the Movie Demolition Man, if you use bad language you are fined, you can't use toilet paper to wipe, you can't have sex, heck your not even alowed to kiss because they call it exchange of bodily fluid. Is society starting to come to this point? As far as second hand smoke. It is scientificly proven that diabetes, cancer, and other diseases are already in our DNA. For what ever reason something has to trigger that part of our DNA for it to start. Look at George Burns, he smoked huge cigars for years and lived to be 99. He didn't die of lung cancer. We are starting to lose our rights given to us. Why don't they close down all fast food because it might lead to obesity, high blood pressure or even heart failure. Why not outlaw the use of sugar because it leads to tooth decay and weight gain. Here is a thought, "How about banning food stamps and welfare," and actually make people go out a get a job instead of laying on the couch all day and watching t.v. Heck why not get rid of couches and t.v's because they cause us to be less active, which in return can lead to obesity and poor health. This is what I mean about, "were does society begin and end."
