Who to blame
I agree with Bjnemp this ban the way it was proposed is basically taking away the smokers rights. You non smokers have a choice whether to go in a bar or restuarant that smokes just like a smoker has the choice if they want to go in a bar or resturant that is non smoking but to tell them this is the way it is and its this way or you get fined is taking away the rights of the citizens and of the men and women who are and had served our country for our freedom of choice on many issues. Teresa Walters and her committee is just trying to be a big shot. Thinks it makes her big in this town. But all it is being is that we are being told how to live when to live and where to live. Are we living in Nazi Germany time period again? It sure is looking that way!

For the ban
I use to be a smoker and I can see both views but as a citizen of Emporia by voting yes you are taking away the rights of people to live the way they want. You have the choice whether to go into an establishment whether it is smoking or non smoking. But you are not giving the smokers that choice they have to do what is told of them. That is so WRONG! So wise up people of this community first this ban then what else will they take away from us. Our right to have children. Think about it folks slowly but surely they are taking away our rights and you're letting them.

Bowling team ready to start new tradition
I'm thrilled that they have brought bowling as a sport in the high school program. It is about time and the kids are the future of the sport of bowling. I've been bowling for over 30 years now and it's one sport that the whole family can enjoy and participate in. Good Luck Spartans and may the ball treat you well and the games be high.

Hunt for Hunger Gives Meat, money
I commend this group and am proud that they wanted to do something to honor Beau Ardnt. It was a tragic thing that happened but if something good has came out of this unfortunate tragedy then I think Beau would be very proud and is watching over this group of people.

No parade; service moved
Well I'm happy that I'm not the only one that was disappointed and have the same feelings about the cancellation. First the 4th of July and now today and very possibly the Christmas Parade well what is Emporia coming too. We won't have any enjoyment to look forward to cause our City representatives is taking it away from us. I understand the Clydesdale not being able to come because of their gear might get damaged with the weather but again no reason to cancel the whole parade.... Shame on the coordinator for making that decision just cause he didn't want to get wet....

Give us a choice
I'm sorry but I'm afraid all these little groups that come into Emporia will definitely start taking away our rights little by little till we have no rights anymore. Next they will tell us what church we are to believe in and what foods we are to eat. We no longer will have the freedom of choice. So why is our men and women fighting for freedom overseas when our own community is taking it away. We are no longer being a demorcratic country when all these groups start to take away our freedoms little by little... It's a coming folks if we allow "Clean Air of Emporia" have their way.... I'm sorry there isn't alot of evidence proving that second hand smoke is killing people. I was a smoker and what they are doing is wrong... WAKE UP Emporia!!! Don't we have the right to make our own CHOICE? Do you like being told what you can do or what you can't do? I sure don't!

On the Other Side
As an ex-smoker I will say this.... IT is your choice whether you want to go to that establishment that smokes. Just like it is the smoker's choice to go to places where it is non smoking. By taking away the rights of the smokers you are taking away the freedom of choice. So you who are non smokers can go to non smoking establishments I'm sure there are some places out there. But let the people make the decision on their place of business whether to be a non smoking or smoking establishment. This is AMERICA and we do have freedom of choice. Isn't that what our men and women are also fighting for our Country and our forefathers before them.

Opinion: Smoking ban - What’s right?
As an ex-smoker I agree with Ryan, it does not give the people of the Clean Air Emporia the right to tell anyone where they can or can't smoke and fine them on top of that. That is against the rights of freedom that our MEN And WOMEN are fighting for overseas and here in our own country. "Why are they fighting for then?" It is your right to choose whether you want to go to that establishment whether it is a non smoking or smoking. You have that choice. It shouldn't be up to that Group to tell anyone where to go. So I'm very against the smoking Ban it should be left to the owner and whether they allow smoking or not.

Group says Emporians want smoking ban
I use to be a smoker and after reading that article to me the rights of the smoker is being taken away. From my understanding already alot of them public places people know they can't smoke in, library, hospital, county courthouse, etc and now you telling them like they are a child. "You can't smoke here and here and here." Alot is just plain commen sense on where you can or can't smoke and it should be up to the establishment not the "Clean Air of Emporia", cause they did not ask the whole population of the city. I wasn't asked... and I'm sure there was a few others from reading of the post that didn't get asked. So they can't say that "Emporians Want the Smoking Ban." Goodness next they will tell us what we can do in our own homes. This isn't a free country anymore it's more like a dictarship where the city tells us what we can do or what we can't do. What are our men and women fighting for then? Surely not our freedom of choice cause it is slowly being taken away from us little by little.

RDA gets briefing on Lowe’s plan
Unfortunely Target will probably never come to Emporia cause we aren't large enough demographic for them. Same with Red Lobster, Olive Garden and some other name resturants. So if we want quality food we still will have to drive to Topeka or Wichita or Kansas City for the finer foods. And if memory serves me correctly I believe Lowe's is a branch off of Walmart anyway so it was just a matter of time before they came into Emporia. Just hope that they don't drive out our other Home Improvements stores that has been here for a long time.
