Well I'm happy that I'm not the only one that was disappointed and have the same feelings about the cancellation. First the 4th of July and now today and very possibly the Christmas Parade well what is Emporia coming too. We won't have any enjoyment to look forward to cause our City representatives is taking it away from us. I understand the Clydesdale not being able to come because of their gear might get damaged with the weather but again no reason to cancel the whole parade.... Shame on the coordinator for making that decision just cause he didn't want to get wet....

I'm sorry but I'm afraid all these little groups that come into Emporia will definitely start taking away our rights little by little till we have no rights anymore. Next they will tell us what church we are to believe in and what foods we are to eat. We no longer will have the freedom of choice. So why is our men and women fighting for freedom overseas when our own community is taking it away. We are no longer being a demorcratic country when all these groups start to take away our freedoms little by little... It's a coming folks if we allow "Clean Air of Emporia" have their way.... I'm sorry there isn't alot of evidence proving that second hand smoke is killing people. I was a smoker and what they are doing is wrong... WAKE UP Emporia!!! Don't we have the right to make our own CHOICE? Do you like being told what you can do or what you can't do? I sure don't!

On Give us a choice

As an ex-smoker I will say this.... IT is your choice whether you want to go to that establishment that smokes. Just like it is the smoker's choice to go to places where it is non smoking. By taking away the rights of the smokers you are taking away the freedom of choice. So you who are non smokers can go to non smoking establishments I'm sure there are some places out there. But let the people make the decision on their place of business whether to be a non smoking or smoking establishment. This is AMERICA and we do have freedom of choice. Isn't that what our men and women are also fighting for our Country and our forefathers before them.

As an ex-smoker I agree with Ryan, it does not give the people of the Clean Air Emporia the right to tell anyone where they can or can't smoke and fine them on top of that. That is against the rights of freedom that our MEN And WOMEN are fighting for overseas and here in our own country. "Why are they fighting for then?" It is your right to choose whether you want to go to that establishment whether it is a non smoking or smoking. You have that choice. It shouldn't be up to that Group to tell anyone where to go. So I'm very against the smoking Ban it should be left to the owner and whether they allow smoking or not.

On Opinion: Smoking ban - What’s right?

I use to be a smoker and after reading that article to me the rights of the smoker is being taken away. From my understanding already alot of them public places people know they can't smoke in, library, hospital, county courthouse, etc and now you telling them like they are a child. "You can't smoke here and here and here." Alot is just plain commen sense on where you can or can't smoke and it should be up to the establishment not the "Clean Air of Emporia", cause they did not ask the whole population of the city. I wasn't asked... and I'm sure there was a few others from reading of the post that didn't get asked. So they can't say that "Emporians Want the Smoking Ban." Goodness next they will tell us what we can do in our own homes. This isn't a free country anymore it's more like a dictarship where the city tells us what we can do or what we can't do. What are our men and women fighting for then? Surely not our freedom of choice cause it is slowly being taken away from us little by little.

On Group says Emporians want smoking ban

Unfortunely Target will probably never come to Emporia cause we aren't large enough demographic for them. Same with Red Lobster, Olive Garden and some other name resturants. So if we want quality food we still will have to drive to Topeka or Wichita or Kansas City for the finer foods. And if memory serves me correctly I believe Lowe's is a branch off of Walmart anyway so it was just a matter of time before they came into Emporia. Just hope that they don't drive out our other Home Improvements stores that has been here for a long time.

That is great that Lowe's wants to come to Emporia and I really hope it happens but there needs to be some other Manufacturing companies that will bring revenue in to Emporia cause we are losing our workforce to bigger cities cause there isn't anything here to offer the people looking for jobs. Just don't want to see some of other Home improvement stores get shoved out either when Lowe's comes in.

Unfortunely I think you're so right with it going to happen more now with times hard on everyone. With the lay offs and with the price of gas, people are having a hard time making ends meet and there is a need to feed the family. Let's hope though that Emporia will bring in some new jobs soon and that it don't get to the point where we see more robberies of businesses happening. We can't blame everything on the commissioners cause of the fireworks not being put on this year.... But they could had possibly gave us a heads up that it wasn't going to happen and maybe some donations toward it could had taken place. But we was cut off guard with the news just a few days from being the holiday.

That is what the tax payers pay the Police and Animal Control to control animals that are running loose or is or could be vicious and for the safety of the public. If it isn't the Police's job nor the Animal control doesn't want to go into a certain neighborhood cause they know that there is loose dogs running around then the Commissioners need to come and pick up the animals. That is their job too to make sure the public is safe from these animals. So unless you commissioners want to get a phone call to come and get a vicious animal or a dog that is on the loose then I suggest you think about hiring a couple more Animal Control people. There is no reason why we can't go outside in our own neighborhood and not feel safe. Sad that our Police dept. has that attitude that they can't do something until an animal mauls a child or even an adult. Will it take a death before you wake up that something needs to be done?

Well unfortunely no matter what we do for the kids of this community someone has to put some type of graffiti on something to ruin it for everyone. Took my grandkids to the new addition at Peter Pan Park and already there was some nasty writing on the area where the train is.... So sad that something as wonderful as that new addition is someone has to ruin it by degrading it with there graffiti. So if they can be caught at writing these things on property then they should be the ones to clean it up plus pay a fine. Hopefully that will teach them to respect property and not degrade it with the filth.
