I agree. I think the prize was a huge surprize to everyone, including President Obama. I believe the Nobel committee is reacting to Obama's frequent gestures to all the countries of the world to try and find common ground with which a dialog can be started. His statement about reaching out with an open mind and not a clinched fist was one of the things I think the committee was reacting to. I think it is great and that gesture alone is worthy of recognition.

It is obvious that this writer is a Palin supporter. I have also heard a few (not many) liberals comment that she has "held her own" while she is interviewed or engaged in public speaking, but I have to disagree with that assessment. I find her to be poorly informed and she seems to have failed to do her homework. I don't hate her, but am glad she wasn't elected, as I think we need intelligent people in government who have done their homework on the important issues we face together. What I find most upsetting is her tendancy to divide rather than unite people. I found her comments like "real Americans" to be offensive and pandering to the far right.

On Palin has acquitted herself

I agree it is not clear why she is resigning. However, if I were to venture a guess it would be so she can cash in on her celebrity by going on a speaking tour. Unless she starts studying real hard, she has no chance at a presidential bid, and this move will make that even more difficult.

Henry,
You are mistaken. The initial assessment or "intake" is scheduled within 10 days of your first contact. If you decline the appt time offerred to you, it could take longer, but the offer of an appt is always made within 10 days. Do you really not understand what an emergency is?

You could not be more wrong!! As a therapist in the Emergency Department of the Mental Health Center, I know that people are seen here on an emergency basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No one in crisis has to wait months to be seen in the Emergency Department! The "intake" appointment is the initial evaluation and is required by state regulation to be done to assess what mental health care is needed and appropriate in non-crisis situations. While there are times that individuals have to wait for an appointment with a therapist or psychiatrist, no one in crisis has to wait for months to be seen. As for the closing of charts, it is true that charts are closed after three months of no contact, this is also required by state regulation. A client in Individual therapy is usually seen every week, or every other week, so if their chart is closed, it is because the person has not kept appointments and have not responded to letters sent to them asking if they still want/need services. We are required to send at least three letters to a client who has not been seen for their appointments. If you have any questions or need assistance, I would encourage you to call the Mental Health Center and we would be glad to assist you.

While McCain did better than I expected (I thought he'd do more mud-slinging than he did and was thankful he didn't) I thought Obama clearly won the debate. In all the debates and speeches, the GOP has tended to focus on discrediting their opponent rather than focusing on the issues and how they'd address the problems. It seems that both canidates promised a "respectful" campaine, but neither have delivered! This is especially true with regard to the GOP convention. How can you ever expect bipartisan cooperation when you call the other side names! Very childish!!

Besides the economic issue, healthcare is one issue that seems to be very important to the public and for myself. I think Obama got it right when he said healthcare was a right of Americans. The reason I agree with Obama is that hospital emergency rooms cannot deny treatment to anyone who comes through the door...by law! It is in this sense that healthcare is a right. Problem is, many uninsured get their medical care this way and it is not an efficient way to provide it, costing all of us more. I'd also bet that McCain thinks very differently when the persons needing healthcare are veterans and he has to admit we haven't done a very good job for them. I also find it disturbing that McCain proposes that we tax healthcare benefits, yet claims he will not raise our taxes, what a crock! Unfortunately candidates tell lies to get elected and then do what they really want, a better way of putting it is to view their campaine speech as "mythos"(myth) and their actions after election as "epos" (epic).

I will be voting for Obama, mostly because I want a team that will be competent, unlike Geo. W.. Palin was a exceedingly incompetent choice for VP. I think if McCain would have picked Romney, Huckabee, or even Gullianni, he'd be ahead and probably win.

On Rate the Debate

It is not surprising that many in this typically Republican state would believe Palin won the debate, but national polls seem to indicate otherwise. I found Palin's performance, while better than I expected, disappointing. She avoided many questions and returned again and again to pre-prepared statements. Biden came across as informed and prepared. He also clearly stated his ticket's position on the issues and I liked his focus on the middle-class. Having Palin as a VP is a scary prospect, but halloween is just around the corner, isn't it!?
