There is a new type of ethanol plant being built in Iowa. It doesn't use the corn seed, but uses the cobs and stalks. Maybe we could look into that.

EMMETSBURG, Iowa (AP) __ The new Iowa Power Fund board awarded a $14.75 million state construction grant in Emmetsburg to kick in money for a proposed ethanol plant.
The grant went to Poet Biorefining after a unanimous vote at a board meeting in Mount Vernon last week.
Unlike traditional ethanol plants which use corn kernels, the
Poet Biorefining facility would use corn cobs and stalks for a
cleaner fuel.
The plant will employ between 40 and 50 people. Construction is planned to begin next year, and plant will begin production in 2011.
The plant is estimated to cost about $300 million, with a total of $20 million contributed by the state. The federal government is adding another $80 million.

Is the Senior Fair on Sept 23? I haven't noticed anything about it.

When will we get Dave Ramsey's radio program? maybe in place of some of Bruce Williams.---I am getting tired of him. Ramsey is on every afternoon on the Salina station, but KVOE can surely get this too. His ideas are excellent.
He is on satellite tv ( channel 355, I think) every night.

Is the country club included in this ordinance? Or because it is "private", is it going to be one of the excepted places? I am a nonsmoker, but am also against laws like this. it would make more sense to be against drinking and drugs instead. Look at all of the problems caused by too much alcohol; I would bet that over 75% of the crimes are due to alcohol and/or drugs, not to smoking. The effects of these crimes usually affect more persons than any second hand smoke.
Exactly what constitutes a "public" place? If I have a small insurance office, or barber shop, can I not allow smoking there? What if I am the only person working there, are you telling me that I can't smoke in my own business? or if I am in the park, and there is a party of smokers nearby, can I turn them in? Where does this end?

I am wondering about the post by the person saying Christie is bad for the town. I haven't been able to get any info from the site that blogger mentioned. Could the gazette or someone get that info?

It looks like it will be a really nice addition.
I do have a question---how on earth do you move a train car like that to Okla? Will it fit on a truck?

If this project is a go, and the new bridge on 18th out to the aquatic center is a go, the bridge on Graphic Arts isn't finished yet, and the spaghetti bowl is still unfinished, what kind of mess will the traffic be out there? There will have to be street work done on 24th if a Lowe's should go in there.
Anyway, why do we have to have that new 18th st bridge before graphic arts bridge is done? A lot of people coming into the schools from the west take 18th ave. These bridges never seem to be finished in a timely manner, and the 18th ave one probably wouldn't be done in time for swim season next year. it needs to be started as soon as the pool closes for the season, in the fall.

I would love to see Amtrak service here again.
Is there maybe an old depot in a nearby town that could be brought in for a depot, instead of building a new one?
If a new one is built, it would probably be an oversized outlandish one to match the courthouse!!

How about getting rid of the run-down house at 12th & Exchange(site of the beer-can tree of a couple years ago)? It has been sitting empty for many months, and seems to look more delapidated every time I drive by. What a good impression that must make on prospective students (and parents).

I notice the article says that the Emporia proposal is more restrictive that the Lawrence one is. Maybe if the Emporia ordinace were less restrictive, it would not gather such ire.
On Lawrence ban goes smoothly
