Hungry Kids

I am truly sorry for these children, and every situation is different, but on many occasions I saw children walking into school with no coats, getting free lunches and seeing their parents sit in their idling SUV's with their $3000 tires and rims.
These are the situations that are causing the uproar. Most people have good hearts and dont want to see these children suffer like this, but are their parents doing all they can to prevent this issue? Single mother of 6????

City to spend at least $100,000 on entrance monuments

Maybe they could erect a stone beside the water park. Imagine all the people that will flock into town.

Back in the wild wild west, city hall would have been burned down for stupidity like this.

I know why. One of our officials probably drove through another town twice our size that had these types of stone signs and knew we had to have some immediately also. You know, got to keep up with the Jones's...

Something’s Gotta Give

Sail,
Do you have any grounds to base this on? Do you know how many are employed vs how many drive to other communities? Did you really expect a global company to come in and say, "yes we will only hire people that live inside the city limits to run this multi million dollar facility." The majority of hourlies live in Emporia and YES, some from the surrounding communities. These people may not live in Emporia, but since this is shopping "mecca" of the area, they pay our outrageous sales taxes every day.
Hills is a great thing for the community. Maybe the city leaders should have opened a new smoke shoppe or pay day loans so you wouldnt bitch.

Committee: Close both Lowthers

I have been asked to sit on some USD committees in the past to represent the public. I agree with some posters that our ideas for cuts, ideas, etc went by the way side or were hit with a wall of resistance. No matter how logical the ideas were, we were fed the run around and why this cant happen, etc....
I truly do not feel all of the decision makers are thinking about who is benefiting or being hurt by their decisions. My impression was that they were more worried about "taking care of their own", such as saving jobs, avoiding pay cuts, and not increasing work loads vs the impact on the children.

Crime of the Week

Hope the tractor-trailer owner has better cooperation than we did. We had a hit and run a while back. I found peices of the car that hit us that ID'd the make/model of the car and we knew what color. I called the police to tell them what I had found and never could get a return call back.

Schools file lawsuit against the state

School districts havent been made accountable for years and have had a bottomless cash pot. Yes, this includes hiring un-needed personell and an AVERAGE teacher salary now of $50K in Emporia. The administrators average salary is even higher.
Times get tough and now they do not know how to handle it. No blank check book anymore so they need to sue.
If they made cuts where they were NEEDED instead of wanted it would be much simpler.

Quonset Huts

If they were so "historical", why were they allowed to disentagrate all of these years. They are an eyesore, and have served their time. Let them come down and use the money recovered in recycling the metal for a project for the children of Emporia.

What to do with Soden’s Grove?

A legitimate playing surface? I need to go down and take a look. I played baseball all my life and through college. I saw many surfaces that kids these days would consider "not legitimate". You take a bad hop and take one of the forehead, you work on your hand/eye coordination and go get the ball next time before it eats your lunch again.
I agree, we are not KC or Wichita. That better than everyone else" attitude has gotten us into many other problems in this town over the years.
I just dont understand why after all of these years that the field condition has suddenly deteriorated to this point. I read the article, but havent the high school and legion teams played on this field in this manner for several decades?
