It would be nice for the board to address why they felt it important to push out the competition in Emporia. Having a choice such as the Surgical Hospital was in the community’s best interest. Could it be because they don't want Newman's to be held to a higher standard? As I stated in the comment section of the last article, I would not trust Newman's Hospital in an emergency situation!

justthinkin: I got the chance to read your comment before it was removed (which I am not sure what validated it's removal), you made a lot of good points.

I also have not read Dr. Barnett's comments, but I can state that I would not go to Newman's in an emergency situation. I also can say that it is a shame that Newman's felt the need to force the Emporia Surgical Hospital out of business. My family had major surgeries at both facilities and the quality of care at the surgical hospital put Newman's to shame. The fact that Newman's was so underhanded in the way they forced insurance companies not to add the surgical hospital as a preferred provider is a disgrace. My family has dealt with several major medical issues and each time Newman’s has failed to provide quality care.
I hope more physicians will step up and speak out along with Dr. Barnett. Maybe this will bring us the change in medical care this community deserves.

It is nice to see those that work so hard recognized for it. Congratulations to these men for their work well done, this I'm sure was not an easy case for any of the law enforcement involved. Keep up the great work.

Which in theory is great, but what is happening is that teachers are only allowed enough time to "teach to the test" and the quality of education our children are receiving is suffering.
I have been told by both teachers and administrators that it boils down to the might dollar, and our kids are who suffers.

Mr. Walker~ I hope you can ignore the people that have attacked you here.
I first hand have seen teachers "collaborating" during this time and I don't think that sitting in each others classrooms gossiping about each other and their students is good use of district time or funds.
As I have stated before on other posts we have good teachers in this district that do an awesome job; however, they are not the majority. Very few show up early or stay late and very few make good use of this time. I have had teachers tell me themselves that even at district meetings teachers will sit and talk through them and they are a waste of time. Something needs to change.

I was part of the PBB and I have to disagree about the comment that "PBB Committee was overwhelmingly clear: take care of the employees and stay focused on improved student achievement".
Our message to the district was first to make the cuts have the least amount of impact on our students, and second to take care of the staff. There was also a lot of concern expressed about the pressure on both staff and students to do well on state assessments. It was discussed in great lengths the impact that this stress has put on both the teachers, and on students actually learning in the classroom. As a parent I can say that it disturbs me to sit at a parent/teacher conference to only hear about how important it is that my child does well on some state test rather then what they are learning in the classroom.
The group I was in was not so focused on "improved student achievement", but on making sure we don't overreact and not have enough staff, creating oversized classes in the district. It was secondly concerned that we be able to fill staff positions that are proving to be hard to fill and being left open.

CitizenT~ I will agree with you that there are teachers that work from 7:30 to 5:00; however, not the majority. I have children at all grade levels and have worked in the schools. Very few teachers will put in the extra time, we have some awesome teachers in this district that do, but those are not the majority.
I also have kept a journal of the amount of time the children actually have with their classroom teacher and the amount of time is very hard to swallow. The teachers need to be allowed to teach the way it use to be and all this in-service, collaboration time, or time teahers spend during a regular scheduled school day out at some training really needs to be re-evaluated. Our district is in bad shape.

Create~ You are so right; it is refreshing to hear a teacher speak up.
It's not just the in-service days, but all the days that our kids are in school only to have a substitute for the day, while the classroom teachers are sent off for training. To me that is just wasted time that our kids are in school.
It is time our District looks at re-evaluating the teacher contracts and the time those teachers actually spend with our children teaching them. In the end it is the kids that are loosing out and falling behind other districts due to the mess we have created.
I have to agree with Mike Black that we really don't need early releases every week. Once or twice a quarter on Fridays would probably be more then enough time for collaboration from what I have seen when I am in the schools on Wednesdays!

I was also a student of yours over 17 years ago and your class has always stuck with me. Marriage and Family is a class everyone should take and probably the class I have used the most in my life. Thank you for a job well done.
