It's nice to know there are other parents out there who ask their children to help out around the house & give them chores. I know there are plenty of parents that do this, but according to my kids, "they are the ONLY ones who have to help at home"... I just tell them how lucky they are that they are learning life skills they'll be able to use when they get out on their own (I lchuckle ---- they don't)!! I don't fill their summer days with chores. In fact, they don't even have chores every day of the week; however, as a mom, it is nice to be able to either sort some laundry before I leave for work, or throw a load in, and come home to laundry that is done, folded & put away! I believe teaching kids to take some responsibility around the house as well as skills they'll definitely need later in life is a good thing! Speaking of cooking...my kids like to cook as well (simple things, but still, they're cooking it) and my youngest loves FFY (Fin For Yourself) nights at our house!! I don't intend to change and know that somewhere down the road, I will be watching as my kids give their kids chores and household responsibilities!

@mickey - Emporia is very fortunate to have a zoo, given the size of the city. And, it's free to boot! It may not seem like much of a zoo to you, but to a child, it's amazing and fun. To adults, it a beautiful place to go and relax.

Was the Mock DUI crash a voluntary assembly as well? And, were only those students academically eligible allowed to attend? IMO these types of assemblies ought to be mandatory for all students. Yes, all the kids know they shouldn't drink & drive & they know what can & does happen, but why pass up the opportunity to see reality in action? I realize EHS has done the Mock DUI crash for a few years, and I believe it probably has an impact on some students. However, I think the students that attended the assembly to listen to Mr. Sinks probably got a much better dose of reality. I went to school w/a great guy - football star, track star, all around nice guy. Freshman year at KSU went out partying w/friends & proceeded to wrap the car around a tree. He is paralyzed from the neck down. That was a huge wake-up call for everyone who knew him. I agree w/previous poster who questions the administration's priorities.
On High School assembly on drunken driving requires sign-up, excludes some students

I go back & forth on the issue of teacher pay. I honestly believe teachers should be paid (& receive increases in pay) based on their performance. There are so many great teachers out there that put in a lot of time year round and they are not compensated any more than those who are out the door as soon as they're allowed to leave for the day. I also believe it ought to take more than a couple years to be granted tenure status. For an experienced teacher moving to a new district, maybe a couple years would be fine as long as their performance supports it; however, I think 2 years is not long enough for teachers just out of college. Again, this is just my opinion.
For the teachers (current & former) - how about some discussion on the cost of insurance. I've got a couple relatives who are teachers and I cannot believe how much you all have to pay for health insurance. It kind of puzzles me because I worked for ESU for a while several years ago and our premiums weren't anything like what teachers are asked to pay. Aren't teachers considered state employees?

Thank you Spanish Pride - amazing how I don't remember typing some of the things that others think they're reading!!! Anyway, @...yeah - No where did I say coaches had to be "nicey-nice". I don't have a problem with coaches getting upset w/players when they make mistakes - and yes, I know that coaches will yell at the kids (especially at the HS level). My point was, and is, that it is not necessary for coaches to cuss, throw things, or degrade players to get them to do what they want. There is a difference. And, BTW - never in any of my posts did I specify I was speaking only about Coach Bloomquist. This is a problem everywhere, not just at EHS.

All 3 of my kids play sports (football, basketball, volleyball & softball). Each is a starter in at least 1 sport. One of my daughters is also a cheerleader. 2 of 3 are involved in music (choir & band) as well. I'm not sitting here passing judgement & sharing my opinions on something I've never been involved with. All the activities my kids are involved in have adult coaches/teachers and, maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but I believe adults should set the example for kids - this includes not only their parents, but leaders of any organization that involve kids. Still standing firm that some coaches go too far to get their point across....

KC - that explanation seems fitting when the price of oil is going down & gas should be going down. However, am I the only one who sees the local stations increasing their prices the same day or morning after the price of oil goes up? Do the tanks magically go empty the same day the price of oil goes up?:) I realize the station owners really don't clear much on a gallon of gas. And, I realize they are in the business to make money, but it would be nice if that cause & effect worked both ways!!
