This kind of stuff went on 20 years ago when I was a teenager. I think it is worse now since too many parents want to be their child's friend rather than parent. Kids need firm boundaries set and punishment when they cross them. Laws today are lax and often applied unevenly. Look at all the celebrities in the news who get a slap on the wrist for repeated DUIs or breaking parole. What message does that send kids? Everyone needs to wake up and pay attention to what their kids are doing and who they run around with.

I agree that it's up to the owners to take care of their animals. Perhaps the answer is not so much more animal control officers but a way for neighbors to turn in the problem owners and actually get action. We tried that in the county but nothing was done. I will say that once the jerks moved to Emporia their dogs were taken away from them. Then at least one adopted out without telling the new owner it had been reported for attacking people. Something needs to be revamped in the whole system. I wish I could come up with the perfect answer since ultimately it's the innocent animals who suffer the most. And to have to worry about getting attacked by a dog in your own yard is disgusting. We have that issue out in the county right now. Good luck to us all!

What a horrible thing to go through. Now to have to basically relive it to testify must be terrible. My heart goes out to the friends and family of Beau Arndt. I hope justice is served. It won't bring the young man back but at least someone will be punished for being so stupid and reckless. I wish I could believe it would serve as an example to others to be more careful with firearms. I doubt it, especially in light of recent shootings that narrowly missed people.

Private property isn't the city's problem but they will hound you to mow your yard. And I think you're not allowed to park cars on the grass either. What a load of crap! I wonder if Price Chopper could get carts that have wheels lock if they leave the parking lot? I've seen those somewhere. It was like an electric fence type thing. It boils down to some common courtesy in dealing with other peoples' property. Good luck, Price Chopper. I think you'll need it.

I agree that banning snakes and poppers is silly. I suspect they threw that in to make it easier to enforce a ban on the other kinds. And a lot of people will take a mile if you give them an inch. And it was never just about people setting off fireworks for one day. It was a week or more of random explosions all hours day and night. That gets nerve wracking. I don't think anyone can spend all that time with earplugs in. . I think it is an excellent idea to set up a designated area at the fairgrounds for people to set off fireworks. The fire dept. can have a few people keep an eye on it and a someone to check them for bottle rockets etc. It's too late this year probably but maybe everyone could start talking to the commissioners about something like that next year. And yes, we should remember what the holiday represents and remember our veterens and soldiers and all who've sacrificed for the USA. It seems the last few years there's not much "united" in the states of america.

Good for Chief Smith! When I lived in Emporia it was like being in a war zone for 2 weeks around the holiday. It was bad enough for me but I felt really sorry for all the poor cats and dogs exposed to all the loud noise. I hope people also remember if they go out into the county to shoot fireworks to a) get permission from landowners to shoot off by their property and b) clean up after themselves. Just because you see a vacant field doesn't mean there might not be livestock out of sight of the road you could frighten. And we get plenty enough trash dumped in our ditches without fireworks debris too.

Excellent point. I've lived in Emporia since 1990 and have always been surprised at the lack of snow removal. A little grit thrown on the icy bridges and intersections would be nice, too. I am at the point of being surprised when I see the snow plows out in town. I live in the county and the county crews manage to plow all the main routes ok. That should be more miles than in town. But the city crews often don't even plow the main drags. I'm not expecting all the side streets but like every 3rd street starting with 6th and going to 18th would be nice. And downtown is a nightmare in winter. I always say a prayer that I can get out of the parking spot without help. Maybe we could attach plows to our vehicles and send the city a bill?

I can tell you what happens if you take care of vicious dog yourself. YOU get in trouble with the law AND the prissy animal shelter people. Years ago someone we know lived in Lincoln Village. A neighbor had a big dog, Rottweiler I think, that would run loose and jump at our friend's car door as he tried to get out. He tried several times to get the neighbor to restrain his dog but he was afraid of his own dog! The police would do nothing. One day our friend heard screams outside. He found the dog had backed a little girl against a tree and was crouched to attack her. Our friend got his gun and shot the dog dead. The police came out and gave him a ticket for shooting in the city limits. Only after he showed them his marksman certificate and showed them the angle of the shot etc did they back down some. He paid the ticket and said it was worth not seeing a kid mauled or killed. The NEXT day a person from the shelter came out to rip him a new one for shooting the dog!!! He replied it was the dog or the kid, which would they choose? I mean, I love animals but a vicious dog should be put down before it hurts someone.

People are getting desperate. Could have been a laid off Tyson worker. I think we'll see more of this as people run out of money and aid. Sad.
