Talk Now

Perhaps the problem is not the message but the messenger (the media). If no one is listening, the message will not be heard. Besides, having the media at every meeting does not mean everything gets reported.

As far as The AP, does it and its members outside of Emporia really care about the monuments? Probably not.

A Piece of the rock

Ms. West raises a good question. Why didn't anyone -- Gazette posters or others -- object to the rocks when it was first being discussed?

Tim-Buck-To to you, too

Justice John Paul Stevens once wrote, “The inherent worth of . . . speech in terms of its capacity for informing the public does not depend upon the identity of its source, whether corporation, association, union, or individual.” In other words, according to columnist Stanley Fish, "a writing or utterance says what it says independently of who happens to say it; the information conveyed does not vary with the identification of the speaker."

Fish's column, which is a good read, can be found here: Anonymity and the Dark Side of the Internet. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/...)

Free speech issue

Flyboy, I'm really hoping that Tonja is making this stuff up. I don't want to believe that someone in a position of authority in Emporia would stoop this low.

Gazette, perhaps a follow-up story is in order.

Free speech issue

Seems to me a government employee who has the time to call a citizen and "threaten" them with a citation for disorderly conduct over something written in the memo section of a check is a city employee with too much time on his or her hands.

I'm with Meth on this one...

Breaking down the monument

The local media can only be silenced if it allows it.

Breaking down the monument

What's equally as stupid is that this has only now become such an issue. Looks like the money for the project was approved by the city more than a year ago. Why did we not object then? Why did we wait until now?

Rocky Conversation

Forgive me if I missed it, but did the Gazette cover this story when it was first discussed by the commission and others?
We all seem "shocked" by the sudden disclosure of the project. However, I suspect the Gazette has only recently brought into the sunlight even though it is not a new story. I count on the Gazette to keep watch on our elected officials. I hope my trust has not been misplaced.

Are the rocks currently located on Mr. Davis' land? If so, then why shouldn't he be able to deny access to them, especially if they haven't been paid for.

Also not sure about the statement, "rock is proclaimed..." What does that mean?

To Mr. Walker, not to throw stones (pun intended) but I'm not convinced the Gazette has kept us abreast as this story has developed (I could be wrong) nor am I surprised that someone would deny reporters access to the rock. What did you expect?

Closings and Cancellations

Emporia's school aren't cancelled due to snow. It's because the wind chill is bitterly cold, too cold for kids who have to wait for the bus.

As far as driving in this stuff, take your time, use some common sense and be alert and you'll do OK.

Military censorship is wrong

Remember, the military is not blocking all news sites because they are "distracting" service personnel. It is blocking a few news sites whose legitimate (i.e. not illegal) content it disagreed with. That IS censorship.
