Are the sidewalks even 10 feet wide in Emporia? Does this mean all the butt cans should be 10 feet from the door also? Can't get that last drag as you open the door anymore, or it'll be a $50 fine. Hopefully after all the 911 calls a disclaimer by the police will be made....."Don't call us about people walking down the street smoking, call the new county commisioner" (or Mrs. Sauder I suppose)

In the past, say in Lawrence KellyG, 2 bars were side by side. One smoking, one nonsmoking. I'd bet you the smoking one would be busier. therefore the nonsmoking bar says "hey, everybar needs to be nonsmoking", because they don't like the FACT that smoking bars are more popular than nonsmoking.

The cash flow from all the speeding tickets along the turnpike work zone is soon to dry up. Now the new cash cow will be the tickets given to ADULTS in ADULT places trying to relax and have a beer and a smoke after work. Kids aren't allowed so tell me why I can't enjoy that legally? Tired of everything 'for the children'. Grow up CAE and don't go to adult places if you don't like what goes on there.

Well I see Supernanny hasn't bought a motel room recently to be asked "Smoking or No-Smoking?" Maybe they need to get out away from the children a little more often. I've seen the question often on this forum to name a public place these people are forced to endure 2nd hand smoke in an enclosed area, has anybody answered that? I think the grant money was available and a few people didn't know what else to do with their time but preach about a smoking ban because everybody else has one. Another case of them thinking Emporia has to act like all the other lemmings. Sheeple....jeeeez! Baaaaahhh!!! Baaadd idea!!!

I don't understand the part about no smoking in motel rooms?
If I pay for a room for the night that's designated a 'smoking room', this ban wouldn't allow smoking? You've got to be kidding! People traveling, stopping for the night, wanting to spend good money in Emporia but told 'sorry, no smoking motel rooms at any price'? Keep your bogus ordinances off my LEGAL vice!! You're not sleeping in the motel room!

Thanks Pat for reminding me about the story on KPR this week. Wheat grass! Wes Jackson of the Land Institute sees a future in it. A harvestable crop that doesn't need planting every year, thereby saving soil erosion, energy planting, etc.

Thank you Gazette for reprinting the original article on the rural shootings in the La Voz. Now maybe less of the dumped animals will speak spanish, since their owners are aware there are other places to dispose of their animals rather than setting them 'free' in the country.

on that long list of towns about smoking bans, I didn't see Junction City. Imagine trying to take that (the right to smoke while having a drink) away from the military. Maybe Emporia is just enough blue-collar, redneck to stand up against this. Why do we need to follow the lemming cities just because a couple of ladies with too much time on their hands and grant money to spend? Emporia isn't the large metro area everybody wants us to imitate. We will always be that in between size. Big enough, yet small enough. Population hasn't changed in the 40 years I've seen, yet everyone wants us to 'grow up' and act like a 'big city'. The people who want big city style, go spend your time there on the weekends. We all know you do, but leave your big ideas there when you come back to work during the week and leave Emporia the way it is and always has been, a little rough around the edges.
