Less government control
Some good points here, but the issue is too complex for demagogues. Those who are lucky enough have insurance are supporting those who don't have it or choose to take their chances and go without. We already have govt. control of health care through 50 state insurance commissioners' offices and we already have the famous 'death panels;' they are called insurance agents who are paid to deny claims and treatment. The debate will continue, but it's much more complicated than 'big government bad' and 'small government good.'

State rep: Technical education key to future
Good points, Ms. Shaver. Kansas is doing a fine job, spending less than most states to achieve laudable results. We will not continue this trend without sufficient funding, however. Technical education is critical and always has been. People who are interested in high-income careers should check this out. A four-year college degree is also a wonderful thing, but universities are not trade schools and education in its purest sense is for the mind and spirit, not the pocketbook.

Midterm elections
A boycott would be interesting, but stupid. If only one person (the candidate, for example) voted for him/herself, that should be enough to get them elected. It has happened before in small local elections, not due to boycotts but apathy. We need to be engaged and informed and involved.

Farewell to Heim
My, my, for all Dr. Heim has done for the schools, the community and the youth, I'm sure they can afford some tea and cookies. I seriously doubt the cost of a reception would equal several days of pay unless Emporians are working for third-world wages. Besides, if you are seriously worried about school funding, talk to your house member and senator. Did they vote for the bill to increase taxes a little bit?

In a good position
Good job, Dr.Heim. You have done well for the community, the students and the schools. No one goes into administration or leadership because they are addicted to positive feedback. The keyboard cowards who attack from behind their hooded faces do not represent the reality of all the good you have done. Good luck at KASB.

Bullying on board agenda Wednesday
As these comments suggest, this is a difficult and ancient problem. Cain and Abel come to mind. We are potentially violent apes and need help learning how to be civilized. Most bullies at school watched their dad bully their mom or some other family member bully a younger member. These behaviors are learned and can be unlearned, with time and patience. Keep up the work on this issue, Emporia schools.
