Teachers are underpaid? Try looking at the support staff. I have worked for the school district for 14 years and have yet to break poverty level wages. And yet, I have had difficulty finding a different job because with all of my current job requirements I have been told that I am "over-qualified". As for spending the $$$ on the football field...well, I thought that the school district was broke. No raises for employees this year. Give me a break...

I like that..."it's not OK to start a fight, but it's OK to finish
it." Wish more people had that way of thinking. There are only so many instances that a child can "run and tell a teacher". What is the teacher supposed to do? Tell the bully that it's not appropriate behavior? The bully already knows that. Schools can place students in ISS or suspend them, but that's about all. Big whoop...

oh4theluvof - There is a reason that teachers have to "focus time on things that fall under the parenting title". Have you been into a classroom lately? I have, and there are posters explaining how to behave! Social skills are not a strong point with people these days...we need to learn again how to be polite with each other, and since the schools have accepted the responsibility of feeding and clothing our children, why not have them teach non-academics, too? No wonder kids have homework...there isn't time to do school work at school anymore.

Just one more way that the Emporia school district is accepting responsibility for the welfare of the children that attend our schools...what good babysitters they are.

Hey, Hartford...my husband lost his job with Didde after being there for 20 years, so we know what it's like. There are a LOT of people in this town who know what it's like to lose a job. You are not the first. It ISN'T the end of the world, and it may not be an easy go, but you will find that out as you go along day by day. Things have a way of working out. I'm a little tired of everyone acting like Tyson is the most important plant that has ever closed in this town...at least the employees are getting pay and benefits for a couple of months. What other company would do that? Not many...most just escort you to the door...

Do not blame the city of Emporia or our City Council. Blame the head office in Arkansas. They don't care about Emporia, this is merely a case of economics. There is nothing that anyone here can do to change this. I commend the company for their lucrative relocation plan and for continuing to pay salaries and benefits for 2 months. When Didde closed, the employees received nothing except an escort to the door. I can't speak for Modine, or any of the other plants that have closed, but the Tyson employees are actually lucky in this regard. Emporia's golden goose has finally laid it's rotten egg.

Funny...I don't remember there being this big of a "stink" risen when Didde went out of business. Or Modine. What about the railroad? Those people lost their jobs and had to take employment out of town. Emporia lived through that and will live through this also.

Beau WAS a great kid...we all agree. The whole family was/is a great group. We spent many days at baseball games with the Arndts. Beau was a very good ball player and it was a joy to watch him play as he gave it his all. He was very smooth on the field. What we want to know is, did God really need a shortstop that badly? Hmmm...we'll not know till we get to ask Him. Tears come every time we think about Beau. Bob, Chris, Annabelle, and Seth...you were lucky to have him, and likewise, he was lucky to have you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you...
