Dear dhcc66, your forefathers did not make it a priority to learn the language or abide by the laws. They did not learn the Native American language and stole the land from those who rightfully owned it. I think we would be a world class leader by allowing a Spanish GED test. Why do "what's always been done." Aren't we the giant "melting pot." I'd love to learn Spanish and I hope my children do, in the future. There are several spanish-speaking businesses in town and I have no problem communicating. As Mr. Garza said, not all jobs require English language at 100% understanding. And, the only way to improve either language skill is to continue practising. If someone can pass the GED because it is in Spanish and get a job that's good for practise and our economy. Why create a group of people without diplomas?

A clay studio and kiln in the basement? She thinks she's got ventilation problems now, just wait. As usual, it sounds like the EAC has headed into a project without much thought. It might serve them well to, at the very least, visit with some visual artists who could advise the center on best practises and use of space when it comes to studios and classrooms. I wish them well, when all said and done, here's hoping it will attract more people and visitors to the downtown. Yes, the Gazette should have mentioned the relocation plans for Tallgrass and Dayton's.

I don't think a carrot stick is a weapon. Why can't we check for guns and knives and let the produce pass through. Is it an all or nothing? I think we can have security and food options, too. Honestly has there been a problem? I think it's kind of nice that ours is the only arena so family food friendly. Times are just getting tighter and if pb&j means I can buy tickets to the double header ESU games then why force a family to choose between going or not going because of the cost of food?

Excuse me, Kansasforlegalimmigration, but Mr. Kelley's article was about the Somali population. They were here legally. Perhaps you meant to post this information somewhere else.

Alice is awesome! Sometimes I don't even need anything from the store and will stop in for a donut in the mornings just to hear Alice sing or see her dance. Nothing puts a shine on the day like Alice...I think the Gazette should do a home town feature on Alice.

Way to go Bill and Maggie. This is wonderful. Future generations will be thankful for your contributions to saving our tallgrass prairie. You have created a legacy. There is no greater type of gift.

abby_normal...I'm sorry to say that yes, it is you the taxpayer who is paying for the Chinese translators. ESU is a state university and receives state allocated dollars each year. Where do you think those dollars are coming from...it's not just tuition. I for one am happy that we have the Chinese students and the Somalian population. How boring it would be to live among people who look, act and think just like me. It makes our community more diverse and well rounded. I'm willing to pay for services that others need (heck, I might need them someday). I'm happy my child will learn first hand about other cultures from the kids in his class. What a wonderful opportunity to live in a small town with an international population. It is the best of all worlds.

Hottopics said, "Its not about immigrants coming to America. Its how they have been dumped in small town America who does not have the resources to support them Then its about their actions, behavior and disregard to the community and the ways of our country."
That sounds familiar, like maybe what the Native American Indians might have been saying when our ancestors arrived on these shores. So I guess we might be frightened the muslims might do to us what our culture has done to others. I get it. Thanks.
And, there were not "lots of police." There were two officers. And, yes, you are right about the Gazette, what's up there...sensationalism is a good way to sell advertising, I guess.

Gwen Larson - Where is the thread for people who want to support the refugee population? What the Gazette is supporting here is a blog for people to rally around only one side of the issue. There's no free exchange of ideas on this blog. No debate of the pros and cons of this issue. I guess someday when our country is torn apart as suggested in this blog, we will need to pray for the kindness and hand up from some other group of people. For our sakes, I hope they have more compassion than we do.

Obama wins enough delegates last night to secure the democratic presidential nomination. This is history, whether you like him or not. He is the first African American man to do this and in Thursdays Gazette, the story is buried on the 4th or 5th page as an AP article. Come ON!!!! This is news and history.
