Health care opposition
I have worked in the medical billing profession for over 20 years. What I don't understand is why we are not going after the insurance companies just like we did the big banks. An office staff of 5 people with spouses and children paid roughly $40,000 per year in insurance premiums. All of us rarely used our insurance for more than yearly checkups. Now multiply that by many more offices that only require minimal medical care and keep multiplying it. The insurance company is making more money off of healthy people than they are paying out on sick individuals. The same thing applies to all insurance for that matter. We pay car, auto, health, life. How often do you make a claim on any of these? How much do you think the CEO of Aetna or United Healthcare get paid yearly. Do you know they make more than most cardiothoracic (heart/lung) surgeons I have worked for as well as other physicians, yet these individuals (CEO, CFO, etc) did not have to go to school for over twelve years (depending on their specialty). Why aren't we taking a harder look at what the insurance companies are paying their executives? Just what kind of profit are these companies making from all the people who pay large premiums without really using the insurance itself? These are the questions I would like to see answered. These are the questions we should be asking to really have any type of healthcare reform. Think about it. Add up the figures. Who do you think is really making the big bucks when it comes to healthcare?

Train whistles
I grew up 4 houses away from the train tracks and we loved the sound coming through. My parents still live within a few blocks of the tracks and I still love hearing them at nite when I'm visiting. I within a mile of one of the largest airports in the US and planes can be pretty noisy flying over your house at all hours of the day & nite. But after 9/11 those planes didn't fly for several days and it was the worse silence I have ever experienced. At least Emporia still has those trains going through the town. Think of the towns that don't anymore. Most of those towns don't exist anymore.

Let kids wear Obama sneakers
I was born and raised in Emporia. I am always proud to say I am from the Great State of Kansas. But after reading some of the dialogue on these blogs, I am always surprised and disappointed at how many narrow-minded people there truly are in my hometown. I feel that I was raised by the village of Emporia with a strong sense of people and pride and respect. Very little of this is seen in the rhetoric that is spoken here. But again, we are the land of the free and I respect other opinions My mother and father are both over the age of 70 and have seen many, many things come and go in this country yet they still have the respect of the office that President Obama holds and supports him in his endeavor to try to bring this country back to some sense of stability. I agree with them. What solutions did you see in the last eight years?? Took time to get here and it will take time to get us back. But no, I forget my generation thought we knew better than the one before us and the next generation was taught the y didn't have to wait nor earn what they have, it was just given to them. That's on us.

Seasonal Serenade
Hopefully more people will donate to the Municipal Band. The band concerts in the summer have been a long time tradition and it would be very sad to see that tradition disappear. I grew up in the neighborhood of Freemont Park and it was always a great way for our family and neighbors to enjoy the summer evenings. My parents, who are retired, still enjoy the summer concerts as do I when I get a chance to come home. Keep the good things in Emporia for future families.

Season to Celebrate
It would be a great idea if the suggestion was made at the beginning of the program to hold applause until the end of the program instead of after each performance. This was always done at the program in years past to help keep the program from running to long. I hope everyone enjoys the program and keeps the spirit of Christmas in their hearts.

Debate between vice-presidential candidates
rcakmon you took the words right out of mouth. Sarah Palin talks to people as if they are just good ole folk that don't have the brains to see that she does not now nor anytime in the future, have what it takes to be 2nd in command of this country and most definitely not the President. God forbid. As a woman I'm deeply afraid of this woman having any more power than she does as Gov. of the State of Alaska. Wake up people!! This country is in serious trouble and to have someone with as little experience as Gov Palin in office would be a tragedy for all of us.

Preparedness, Safety Fair Is Saturday
What a wonderful thing Sutherlands is doing. The safety of our children as well as adults should always be a priority. I hope many parents take advantage of this demonstration to help keep their children safe. Hats off to all who are participating.

Shooting victim in critical condition
steakbuffet, I apologize if I misunderstood your last comment. It just seems lately there has been so much bad mouthing of the city of Emporia and the commissioners. I understand that there are tough times going on. Everyone is feeling the pain in Emporia and throughout the country right now. It is time for everyone to get together and speak with the commissioners. I spoke with State Rep. Don Hill and asked his opinion of what needs to take place for Emporia to get back on the right track. He pointed out that there are always ups and downs in the economy. I remember the 70s and the gas shortage then. When Wolf Creek construction was completed and the construction workers moved on it left a hole in the economy then. Things will get better if people try to make it better. Participation is necessary to get us all through this tough time.

Shooting victim in critical condition
steakbuffet, you were doing so well and then you had to go and make a rude comment. Emporia should be proud and feel safer knowing you have a detective that seems to take his job seriously and does it very well. To continue to belittle the city does nobody any good. Did anyone pay attention to the fact that only 9 people showed up for the budget meeting with the city commission? Where were all the people who had issues with the 2008 budget? Everyone complains but to actually become involved or at least attempt to actually see and hear what the city commissioners are planning for the upcoming year, the citizens of Emporia had better things to do. There's a commentary for you. Detective Delmott deserves some thanks and appreciation for the job he performs from the citizens of Emporia. Thank you Detective Delmott.
