Consitution amendment sequence notwithstanding, I thought the original column was spot on. Turning America into a Christian nation, or a Moslem nation, or Jewish, or anything- why that just doesn't fly with me.
I believe the constitutional authors wanted the state to stay out of the church's business because that was a problem back then. Now, the church needs to stay out of the state's business, which is the current problem and the subject of the aforementioned column.
The abortion connnection: the church is telling the state what to do.
What is so mysterious about all this? It is as plain as the nose on your face. Religious leaders are trying to legislate, and they are doing it from their damn pulpits. I say yank their tax-free status and be done with it.

Freedom of speech is good, I suppose, but this "freedom to be a big dumba**" is NOT in the constitution. Expand your horizons, bjm.

Wow, I would not want to be in a room where people talked to each other like this. I would walk out. No, I would RUN out.
Hmmm, the editor suggests that there might be a problem with personal pettiness (and worse) with this forum, and a few of you knuckleheads prove him right.
Step back and read this thread again, or better yet, have your KIDS read it and give you their opinion.
I like the idea of a few rules- require valid email for anonymous user authentication, and prohibit obscenity, racism, personal attacks, etc.
And by the way, Ann Coulter is hardly in the same league with Dan Rather. Warts and all, Rather practice(d) journalism. Ann Coulter is, well, uh, mmm, have you ever LISTENED to her? Sheeesh!

I would imagine that a columnist who wrote such an insensitive remark would get in trouble with his boss.
No, "insensitive" isn't quite the right word. And now that I ponder this, maybe "columnist" isn't the right word either.
Bigotry left unchecked is bigotry approved!
Has there been any sort of apology or retraction?

I kind of miss the big (well, they SEEMED big) walls along 12th ave in front of the campus. A great place to sit during parades.
And the "Rose Broes" Grocery store got me in a lot of trouble one day. I was sent there with a five dollar bill to get a loaf of bread, and came back with no bread and no five dollar bill either. I lost it on the way. I bet if I had told Mark Rose my sad story, he would have at least sent me home with the bread...
I can't see a Rainbow Bread screen door without thinking about that old place.

I read your columns occasionally in the Gazette online edition (when I happen to spot them) and I receive a second hand edition of TLOTM by mail, sometimes several at a time. They are always fun to read, and your voice shines through. The history of Gazette writers is a long and entertaining one and it is a pleasure to read your contributions. If I had *my* way, you would also be a contributing editor of Hills Weekly!

Sam Brownback's candidacy for our nation's highest office deserves closer Kansas press scrutiny. I would like to see a LOT more information about this man and his history, but since he is married to a Stauffer...
Well, maybe CNN will have something someday.
