You are a nice person, create. I had faith that you would apologize. Thanks.

I would recommend avoiding MSNBC. Those folks will corrupt you.

We are all familiar with Bobbi's longtime good work. I'll bet anything that she will look into it. I suspect that dhcc66 is correct that the only information that she had was a press release.

Thanks for the letter, George, and the history associated with it. My parents got some of those Christmas Cards signed by Mr. White. I had forgotten about them. Unfortunately, I don't have any of them. It would be nice today.

create, I think that George's point is that Mrs. Pelosi enjoys a special status, and with that, certain responsibilities to avoid conflicts of interest, or even the appearance of such. Consequently, I agree with his implicit point that it is improper for Mrs. Pelosi to hold those stocks and vote in favor of legislation that would help the issuing company because, by doing so, she personally benefits. Can you imagine what an explosion would occur if Mrs. Pelosi was a Republican instead of a Democrat? MSNBC would melt down and Pat Kelley would be writing editorials about it until after Christmas.

On Conflict

I have written about the "slippery slope" on other threads. By that, I mean when we adopt a practice or law which is contrary to our cultural traditions, there is no end to it. The first departure will be used to justify the second, and so on. When we chose to abandon a 50 year plus tradition of our beautiful Christmas Program in 1992, in order to avoid offending non-Christians, we took a turn down the slippery slope. Now, we have a particular Christian belief that apparently objects to certain aspects of the schools' Halloween observance. Frankly, I think that the lady has a point, a point that would not be valid but for our decision to change an entire tradition in order to appease a small group back in 1992. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Some states, by Judicial fiat, have adjudged same sex marriage to enjoy equal recognition with traditional marriage. Those states are likewise headed down a slippery slope, to the end that there will be those, claiming their own equal protections under the law, who practice polygamy, etc., and their arguments will have merit. I am afraid that we have outsmarted ourselves.

On Pick and choose rights?

Folks, I think that we may need to be a little more gentle on this one. This mother has a point. Personally, I think that our Christmas Program should still be a Christmas Program, but she correctly pointed out that it was watered down into a "Seasonal Celebration" (and what season would that be?) because non-Christians objected. As a practicing Christian, I have no problem with Halloween, but if some do, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander. When we started down the slippery slope some years ago, this is what you get. If we are going to avoid offense to non-Christians, then it only seems right and fitting to avoid offense to Christians.

Gwen: Thanks for removing my post. I was embarrassed about it as soon as I posted it. This whole issue is emotional to me (I'm very protective of our rights in this country and the costs that some have paid in order for us to have them). I'll be more careful from now on. I hope that everything is fine with whatever the reason was that you were in the hospital waiting room over the weekend.

Thank you, Bjnemp. That was very nice and I appreciate it.

So they paid their petition workers? Really. With government money, no doubt. Outrageous.

On Too much government

I apologize about my last post. I'm afraid that I got carried away. I learned a long time ago that reasonable people can look at a set of facts and come away with opposite conclusions. However, it absolutely floors me that this group apparently cannot see what its proposal does to cherished rights, which, once surrendered, will never return. I've written about the slippery slope. Obviously, we started down that slope years ago, an argument used by several proponents of the ban (when they write such things as business is already completely regulated, etc., so what's different with this proposal). We must draw the line somewhere; otherwise, in 50 years we will be no different than Stalinist Russia. Is that so hard to see? Once we strip away private property rights with this ban, then it's easy to move to the next ban that suits the powerful. We are headed down a very dangerous path. This path may look inviting to you today, but a few years down the way, it may come after you. In your older years, you may look back on this, as I look back on Orwell's book, and realize that you should have stood up, you should have sounded the alarm, you should have done what you could to save our precious freedoms. My Dad had a saying: You don't appreciate water until the well goes dry.
