Dick your screen name says it all My father owned his own company for 30 years and yes I know what it takes to run one but never once did he ever let anyone go when times were tough we cut back ourselves so that they never went without a paycheck and food for there kids. Its a little thing called having a heart. Big companies only care about themselves i learned that after he sold to a corporation and 6 mnts later they closed it down for a tax writeoff. Now with the closing of tyson my family is without its only source of income and we have no idea what we are going to do. And i am not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me yes i am mad but what good will it do but only hurt me..No one that worked for tyson woke up friday morning and said i think that i want to unemployed please, were not asking for a free handout or someone to take care of us we just want the same thing that everyone else does Pay our bills keep our homes and raise our kids which we did and will keep doing. This is not going to kill us or break us we will move on but it will take some time. The only people that i feel sorry for are people like you, your backwords thinking is what is killing this country its all about me and what i can get.I have never been on welfair and well never be. I'll find another job and support my own family the way that i was always taught you take care of yourself no one else will. Its obious that most really do not care how this will effect a family or the town at all. If it does not effect you who cares right. Just remember there but for the grace of god go I.

Alfalfa i totaly agree with you that smaller businesses are good for the local economy but they lack the ability to supply some of the benifits of larger ones such as health insurance. Most small businesses fail with in the first 3 years. Every one wants to save a few bucks and will go to larger discount stores. There is no longer any customer loyalty in this country. Emporia needs to stop bribing larger companies to come to emporia and make them pay their fair share just as everyone else.I'm not sure if anyone has read the topeka paper today but there is a very interesting artical about the govener being led to believe that there were enough jobs for all 1500 employees when it is more like 500 -600.Another artical about tyson had a 40% loss last quarter but still made a 34 million dollar profit plus they are going to raise prices for 2008 to cover to increased cost of feed. They are putting the smaller cattle ranchers out of business trying to kill a town and distroying thousands of peoples lives what amount of profit is that worth? Everyone of us need to never but another tyson product again and start buying from local meat lockers this way we know that it locally grown and locally processed and the profit stay here.

No they to use to having the best of the best who really needs that much money anyway. The shortage of beef may or may not be the real reason that they are closing the plant but if there is a shortage whose falt is it not the ranchers a cow can only have so many calf in a year if they has stoped increasing the chain speed every year and stop shipping the beef to other countrys and take care of the people in america they would not be in this situation.Tyson has deversified to much with beef pork and chicken down sizeing is fine but not at the expence of the loyal team members that have sacrificed every thing so that they can have the best of the best at the cost of there health bad sholders bad backs numb hands they need to remember who made them the money that they are wasting and they need to tell the truth about why they are really doing this people can handly the truth better then a load of bull that they are trying to feed us now.If thay are using it as a tax writeoff then just say so.

The school system and stores are locked in at a set price but the problem is not that the problem is that companies like tyson get so big that they have no idea what to do with it.If they would cut the salery of the ceo and vip and stop making million dollar comercals that nobody watches that right there would cut cost by a few million a month.

Let me tell you all how things are for someone whose shoes you are trying to walk in. The only recruters that have been in the plant are the tyson plants fron finney, Dakota city and joslin. Not everyone that wants to transfer to another plant will be taken it is only for the openings that they have. The bonus that they are talking about are for grade are for those that hold a grade 5 or higher.Tyson never bothered to inform second shift slaughter that wednesday would be there final day until the end of there shift. Yes First shift still have there jobs for no but are only getting guaranteed 32 hours. And as for being better off not working while we get paid think again, Unemployment is not going to pay my bills and feed my children and be enough to keep my home you tell me how much better off I am going to be? All of you that still have your jobs need to feel very lucky in time it may happen to you and how are you going to feel with others making comments that it is alll your fault and that you are going to be better off then you are now? You all need to say a little prayer when you go to bed tonight and say thank you for what you have one day it may be taken away from you to.

unlike you most of us have other skills then flipping hambugars we took these jobs for the income and the security that we thought that would be there till we were old enough to retire. Those that are not in it for the long haul will go other places but there are a few of us that took these jobs so that we could buy our own homes and be productive citizen in this community. But with the prospects of not being able to find another job that pays as well in this town we need to be able to learn another trade to still be able to pay our bills, keep our homes and support our children. Unlike you we do have other skills the only skill that you most likely possess is the ability to chug beer and play video games. When you own your own home pay your own bills and comtribute to this town then we can talk but till then just keep your ignorant opinions to yourself .

gayzettesux, Iam one of these people that are being laidoff and if you think that the state is just giving us a hand out you are quite mistaken, Where do you think that this money comes fron let me tell you where from the same people that they are giving it back to I personally pay over 2000.00 dollars a year for property tax and have been pay taxes in this plant for the last 11 years its not a hand out it is money that we have already paid in in taxes you need to get a real job and keep it for 11 years then have you livelyhood riped out from under you. Its ignorant people like you that make me sick. Its hard working people like us that are having a hard time excepting that we will not have jobs in a matter of weeks. It is people like us that worked hard every day with out complaning unlike you you probably have never held a job for more then a week.Get over yourself and grow up.

We are all getting mad at the wrong people here, this is not a black, white, or a hispanic issue here, it all has to do with the economy,Before ya'll get mad my family has been effected by this to my husband has worked for tyson for 11 years and it isn't fair we are a one income family with 2 kids.We have no savings to lean on and we lived from paycheck to paycheck. Things look bad for all of us but we will make it..And hillbilly we don't plan on eating any meat that comes from tyson ever again.I live in the country and before i will buy any meat from tyson i will raise my own cows and slaughter them myself..And eddison2 yes the equipment is out dated and not worth moving half of it doesn't work, and they never planned on fixing it at all,The only thing that it is good for is scrap metal. Most of it has been their since ibp. They have known that this was coming for a long time thats why nothing has been fixed or replaced. We all need to remember that life will go on and in the long run things will get better even though it does not seem like it now what does not kill us makes us stronger.

On Tyson will eliminate slaughter in Emporia
