Chis.....conduct a survey and find out how many people live in Emporia and travel somewhere else to work. You might be surprised. They are spending another communities money right here in Emporia. Have you ever thought about that?

Keep Emporia growing

methusla.....I would like to know what cities around have a lower sales tax than Emporia? If there is such a place, that has.....let's say ........ 2% less sales tax, you'd only save $2.00 on a $100.00 purchase. It would cost at least $20.00 to drive there, plus the wear and tear on your vehicle. Look at all the extra people that would be out of work or moved away, if the RDA wouldn't have had this 1/2% sales tax to help Emporia grow. We would have even more vacant houses and more businesses closing, because those extra 1,000 people wouldn't be here to spend their money in Emporia.

City planner hired

You all should get your figures straight, before commenting and remember what you read in the paper. If you remember, the city isn't re-hiring their personnel director. They've turned that over to the Assistant City Manager (as if he needs more to do). That position paid 68 to 103 thousand a year. This new position pays between 50 and 80 thousand a year. So, as you can see the city is saving alot of money at the cost of the assistant city manager.
