Public opinion slows project

Food, clothing and shelter. Learn to be content with these. Reading, writing and arithmetic. The amenities aren't wrong unless the minors become majors. Our children are already too rapidly learning aberrant materialism and it is killing them in more way than one. Spending taxpayers money on other that what it was collected for is fraud and theft. For those on the commission who have put wants above needs for political favor you might consider consulting your pastor. Absolution does not equal repentance. If ya'll want the rocks, raise private funds or pay for them yourselves. Those who donate have given their vote of yes. Someone might consider the legalities of trying to recoup moneys already spent. Someone pointed out earlier the east side of town. We all have personal responsibility for our own property, but streets fall under the heading of city services.Again, anything "frivolous" purchased is theft of services against the public. The taxpayers would likely be in jail for doing the same thing done to them. Reminds me of the story in the Bible where a woman kept pestering the king, he finally did what she asked just to shut her up. His motive was evil, but the request was granted. Such actions as this might help us to think about our misuse of the catch phrase "No Fear". It's better to do right out of love and because it's the right thing to do. But John Newton wrote "Amazing Grace" based on a terrifying conversion experience. We could all probably use a little more constructive fear. That which changes one for the better. True happiness only comes from proper service. Self-service usually comes back to bite, now or later. What good does it do to hoodwink visitors? A rock facade(band-aid) on the outskirts gets pretty "bloody" when your vehicle is beat to pieces inside. Topeka has pulled the same shenanigans. Show them were smarter than that. Thank God, we have the right of vote, re-call, etc. But if we don't' use it how far down the road will it be before we look like Egypt, Haiti, etc. at our own hand. They don't have a choice. We allow quasi dictatorship and then get angry at the results. Most are level-headed, but no all are. But all told this could fall under James 1. Foolish decisions of self and others are trials that can teach patience. Yet I was told long ago, that although God understands our weaknesses and will even forgive, He doesn't condone wrong. As taxpayers we don't have to either.

Hungry Kids

Don't blame God. He gave us the instructions for a peaceful life. We're the ones who get foolish. We've forgotten to be content with food, clothing and shelter. We forget to treat others as we would like to be treated. We forget to put others needs above our wants. We focus on the exterior(Topeka put up some "neat".signs. I think most visitors would rather not have their vehicles destroyed by potholes. But hey, money only goes so far. We've become shallow. But if the Lord gives us tomorrows and we are willing to learn there can be improvement. Accountability for the common good is fading. We'd rather destroy many than hurt the feelings of one. We rail against a "nanny state" but aren't mature enough to discipline ourselves. We can't have the true freedom without the responsibility.

Districts react to cuts

I have learned to abound and I have learned to be abased. We've had too many "props" in the past and we're reaping what has been sown. How many of our children really want to learn and develop a good work ethic? How many adults? Tax revenues are down. Some are without a job thru no fault of their own. Some just don't want to work. Too many have planted on quicksand. The fact that way too many of our students aren't learning the basic 3Rs is made worse by what they are learning, laziness, immediate gratification. poor stewardship. Faith is more than just a word. Needs should come before wants. Lip service by officials sounds good. The answer lies in the individual heart. But actions reveal that. We all need to examine ourselves, also. We are the people. We are the taxbase. Anytime we put our wants above and the needs of others, we all lose. Pride comes before and a haughty spirit before a fall. We decry socialism, but set ourselves up for it. Democracy requires self-discipline. Chaos and anarchy need a "nanny state". But there is hope.

Is it really worth it?

It takes a lot of faith not to be a thief in today's world. As we know thieves aren't always the "poor". Much money and many jobs are diverted . Diversion of funds is theft. Everyone who takes a major bonus while laying off workers is a thief. We have a promise our needs will be met, but we have to trust and learn to be patient and content.

Emporians nabbed in ID theft sweep

Excuses don't solve the problem. Part of the problem by all is forgetting we are all Americans if we are born here or naturalized. Good Christmas present and example for their children. It's not the fault of law enforcement that they broke the law. The younger generation usually pays the price when adults of any race get foolish. But if they are taught to blame others rather than learning from mistakes, they're likely to follow and pass the cycle on. Most folks want a better life and to support their families. But they do so honestly. I don't see Christ pleased or being pleased when the day assigned to His birth becomes an excuse for breaking His commandment of treating others as we want to be treated. I doubt any thief appreciates being stolen from.

Recount confirms smoking ban question

What about personal responsibility? Those in the service have to field strip the butts and keep them to themselves. Possibly more receptacles are needed but does our younger generation really need more examples of poor sportsmanship and social irresponsibility?

Where is the outrage?

Could be we all need to learn more of the Golden Rule. Individualism does not make a clean community. A selfish heart quickly becomes evident. Too many homes, churches and schools seek to entertain and push a political agenda rather than encourage and if need be enforce the rights of society over that of the individual. He loves, but that love is not a call to selfishness but selflessness.

The wrong road

True democracy is really a myth as too many are too selfish. That is why we are a socialist republic. For people to truly "self-govern" in peace, the common good would have to be the aim of all. It hasn't happened yet. I've worked in medicine for over 20 years and yes I have dealt with those who have been victims of 2nd hand smoke as well as at leas one who claims his addiction to smoking was from 2nd hand smoking. May be a copout, but if one suffers it is too many. I'm not for "prohibition", but to paraphrase the Word, "laws are written for those who put their own selfish interest above the good of others" If the common good of all was the aim of all we wouldn't need laws. But this isn't Heaven..

Kent sentenced to prison; Arndt family files civil suit

If any man be overcome with a fault, Ye who are spiritual restore such a one with a spirit of gentleness. Condolences to the Arndt family, but we live in a world of enough non-forgiveness as it is. The one hurt most by a spirit of non-forgiveness is the possessor, but it can make life miserable for all concerned. None of us are above making tragic mistakes and part of doing to others as we would have done to us would hopefully be forgiveness. Civil penalties are part of life but holding another hostage emotionally is a realm only God has the right to do and as I don't read He does neither should we. It's not always easy but that is why God asks us to rely on Him and not our own understanding.
