As a Kansas school teacher, I have never taken a summer off. My wages do not allow me to do so. I have worked every day of every summer that I have taught. Take a closer look. A starting school teacher in this area can make around $30000. That same teacher with 20 years of experience or more and lets just say (2) masters degrees will make 43,000. That teacher has basically maxed out and has no way to make any additional income. The time needed to take additional hours also takes teachers away from time needed to make additional monies. Lets see a change of a maximum of 13000 over a 30 year period, doesn't really make all those hours of additional education pay off. As for other means of paying for those hours.... let us in on all of those. I paid for my degrees in my own money and my own time all while working full time year round. I don't think this is whining, these are just the facts. I did choose this occupation and it was a good match for me. I wish I was compensated better but again this was my choice. However, as bad as education will need good young people to be tomorrow's teachers, I will have a difficult time suggesting to that bright , intelligent young man that he should pursue a career in education. We made the choice and what we have is one of the most underpaid, under appreciated, overly criticized jobs in todays work world. We will keep going though for the same reasons that we started, because we care to attempt to make a difference.

Oh please.....They are not the only team that has talent. Basketball is a game that has many ways to be inconsistent. If a team does not shoot well on a given night , it is not the fault of the coach. People tend to simplify it too much. Some nights for whatever reason a team just doesn't have it. On the nights when they win are you willing to give the coach all the credit?? Then don't be so quick to give them the loss. I am to assume that in your job everything always goes as planned and you never have a day where things just fall apart. Do you not think the other teams are trying to win too.?? Why don't you tell us what you do and we would all like to show up one day and evaluate your performance. And if you supervise at least five others ....I want to see that their production is always consistently better than the competition. These teams and these coaches are not all given the same talent and I for one think the program has done very well. Who are you to judge the talent level. Yes, Emporia State has had some talent but they are in a league where there are a lot of teams with considerable talent. Pointing a finger at the coaching .....is a cheap and ignorant thing to do unless you have been there. Where shall we meet to give you YOUR evaluation???

As a long-time Lyon County League fan that has seen many tournaments, this was a good one. There was a lot of good basketball played. As for the Olpe Girls, they were so fun to watch. Looked like a bunch of girls playing hard and having fun. I enjoyed watching them. Keep it going girls!!!!
On Olpe girls take out Lyndon, 50-37, win 3rd straight LCL tourney

justmyvoice seems to be a bit blinded by ignorance. I set close to the Olpe bench during that game. Their coach never said anything about the stall tactics of the Hartford team to the officials. I am betting that he realizes that the stall is an available part of the game. I do not believe that Olpe had any scoring goals in mind. I have heard him say that honestly they have NEVER had an offensive goal or a number of points to beat the opponnent by. Nelson is admittedly not a stat keeper and never shows the stats to anyone including the media. There is NO running clock rule in the league tournament so the clock was not a likely goal. With 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter Olpe was playing their bench. There may have been even more substitutions but with the stall game there was not a lot of clock stoppages. I really doubt that 6 points in the fourth quarter in a game like that makes a lot of difference to their coach. I would not try to comment on the strategy of Hartford because I do not know her team or what her intentions were. Halfway through the 3rd quarter of a game what is it that you think any team should do. I was watching and I saw 12 kids on their team and I believe 10 of them played in 4 quarters. They actually I believe scored 8 in the last quarter not 6 as you have said .......but they only scored 7 in the 3rd and actually only 11 in the second. Not sure that the 46 that Olpe was held to is really a big deal but you can cheer it if you think it is a worthy goal. Not sure where you are going on that schools previous records. There are over 100 teams in 1A and going through the elimination process is difficult. I am thinking that whatever their total of state appearances is...something like 16 or so ...that they have faced and beaten a few quality teams. This is a league tournament and as far as I know only league schools are allowed to play in it.
What is it that you would have had them do differently in that game? As for starters being on the floor to start the fourth quarter of a game. I believe that is a common practice of having subs finish the 3rd and letting starters have some time in the fourth. It would seem to me that those players that have earned the most playing time should get the most playing time. As for others rooting against Olpe.......I hear people rooting against the Patriots, the, Yankees, etc. I have a feeling that people even pulled a little for David vs Goliath. I don't suppose the Olpe team likes it but I think they understand it. I have watched many tourneys and I will say I have never seen a badly behaved Olpe team. They usually have a good team that plays with control and sportsmanship. You can hate them if you want but I have to admit that I like to watch them play. Its a great tournament and I will be there for every game possible.

basketballmom makes one quick negative post and gets out of the forum. When asked to be more specific she fails. Its easy on here to jab and run especially if you are whining about something that you can't back up or failed to get enough information about. She seems to be carrying her own scorecard as to who gets the publicity. When asked to provide the editor with the names of the schools that need more publicity she remained silent. Perhaps she should include the name of her (basketballkid) so that they are sure to get that name in the paper as well. The gazette writers need to follow the "no player left behind" rules. I am sure hoping they cover your team soon.

I sure think there are a lot of negative people around looking to pick at somebody elses performance. I have grown up in this area and been involved in sports all my life and a fan of area athletics. Even throughout the changing of staff I have always admired the coverage of athletics in this area. To try to cover all of the area schools and give special coverage to Emporia teams must be exhausting for a small limited staff.
I think the coverage of local schools is more than adequate. Because of a limited staff at the gazette I know that they are often dependent on coaches and school personnel to relay information about games. If your area is not getting good coverage (I would first like to know what school that is?) and then if you have checked to see if your coqaches are sending the information to the papers. To gather that information and try to accurately report, making sure the little darlings have the right stats and name spelled correctly etc must take a tremendous effort. I say the Sports department deserves some praise for a very difficult job well done. Their job is not unlike that of a coach or an official......everyone is looking for whats wrong with it so hard they can't see whats right. From a area small schools perspective.......Thanks Michael Ashford and staff for the job that you do.
