Update: Emporians Lose Electricity

I wish I knew scarlett01_98. Doesn't make any sense to me. I don't think I would be able to as I have to be at my second job after I leave this one soon. We thought the last one was going to starve to death because the animal control officer missed it each time it came by here a couple of weeks ago. I just wish I knew who they belonged to. I'd give them a piece of my mind...

Update: Emporians Lose Electricity

Sorry to hijack the posts, but does anyone know if there is someone willing to come pick up a dog believed to be dumped? Animal control is off today and he/she is going to get hit by a car, or just plain freeze tonight. Had this same problem about 2 weeks ago, different dog, same circumstance. We can't seem to get the city to act on it.

Incentive to Work

americus1987,
If it were conditional for welfare and/or unemployment recipients to do this work as a condition to receiving those benefits, we probably would see a win/win solution. If you don't like the work, then get off of welfare or unemployment and find a different job, then and only then should another option be granted to farmers to find alternative sources for work.
This can be fixed with our own people. We don't need to ship in workers when we have plenty here.
Another problem with bringing in foreign workers, is that the healthcare costs and costs to the U.S. for providing other things such as education to their children, offsets any benefit to having cheap labor. How do you account for that?

Extension merger: where is the benefit?

Alfalfa,
Hard on them in what way? I think that he simply stated what seemed to be obvious. They blatently went against their constituents wishes. You say perhaps it is because the extension made it seem like a grand idea. Of course they would it is soley to their benefit to do so. If our elected officials only look to the group that stands to benefit for the answers, they have not done their job. That is like just letting the extension decide for everyone to let them do whatever they want.

I expect more from my elected officials. Do the homework! Also, if you come to a decision, especially one that is against the grain, EXPLAIN THAT DECISION. I thought it was a good idea, just doesn't cut the mustard.

I really don't think that he was hard on them at all, I have heard opinions from many that would expect far worse.
If they expected anything less than a backlash from their ill-made decision that defied both logic and public opinion, then shame on them for their ignorance and indignation.

Ag secretary seeks waiver for illegal immigrants

Thanks create. I have already contacted a store in Wichita who said that they soon will have pieces from their line. He also said that with the companies new equipment that custom and special orders will be much easier and faster for them to process.

I do hope it will be something I can afford, but am willing to spend a little extra to get the quality and pride of a U.S. made product.

Invest in teachers

Goodjoss, I would have to agree with Justwondering on this. If he actually is a reporter, I would expect more research and facts to support the overall thesis. I am not trying to be rude, but the overall article reads like a 4th grade english assignment. Perhaps this is the case?

I think that perhaps it was written just to fill the space. Is this an editorial piece, as one would assume? They give no indication from the page I see.

Overall, if you are trying to convince the people that something needs to be done about this issue, shouldn't you include more facts and supporting arguements?

Give me the reasons we cannot compete. What areas are we lacking in? I would assume science, math, and engineering, but perhaps they have a different take? How are just keeping teachers or adding teachers going to solve the problem? Are there statistics for every teacher dropped how much student performance is affected?

Yes, goodjoss it may be an opinion piece, but the point Justwondering was trying to make is that it seems this one needs some work to be more thought provoking and persuasive.

I could go on but you get the point...

I love that story! Thanks methusla! It was so moving to see them bringing hope and a future back home.
I am in the market for a new dining table, I am going to see about getting one of theirs. I hope I can, I would love to support actions like theirs!

Ag secretary seeks waiver for illegal immigrants

I don't see any reason why anyone needing government assistance who is not disabled to do community service as a condition for receiving benefits. They can earn their assistance by cleaning the city, highways or doing the public landscaping.

Actually, there are a great number of ways to put them into a working position and earn some assistance.

Perhaps others see this as wrong, I don't know, but I think it would give them at least some dignity knowing they worked for what they got. As a great plus we could have a clean and well kept city.

Perhaps, the farmers could work out something with the government so that those receiving welfare would do the farm work. If they don't like it then that would be all the more reason to get out of welfare and into a job. Win, win?
