Thank you Gwen, that is great information. It looks like Junction City sure puts on a show.

Jayhawker - I couldn't agree with you more.

On Guilty

BJ & Penny - that is exactly what I was envisioning. I'm going to list some ideas we've brainstormed so far and everybody feel free to list your input as far as new ideas or let us know if one doesn't look good. I should preface this by saying I make no promises that this will happen for next year - this is just an idea - whether it happens or not is not up to me as one person could not put all this together.

Possible morning activities (7am - noon):
Fun Run/Walk event
Sand or mud volleyball tournament
Booths and activities that would possibly include:
face painting
canoe races
Water balloon challenge
Putting contest
Basketball shootout contest
kite building competition
Bake Sale (groups could use a booth for their fundraiser)
Art show/display/competition
talent show for different age groups
crafts
possibly a parade where kids decorate their bicycles
dunk tank with city manager/commissioners to fund the fireworks

noon time (11-2)
Free hot dogs at the Aquatic center

Evening (5-9ish):
Street dance on commercial
Could do a battle of the bands contest for the music or have a DJ
4th of July favorite recipe cookoff
Some kind of Auction

Then close that down and do the Fireworks display over at the Fairgrounds.

What do you guys think? Does anyone remember what activities the Twin Rivers Festival Buttons got you free admission to? Was thinking about something similar.

I heard a rumor . . . so keep your eyes/ears open for a possible 4th of July special at the Aquatic Center that people might be interested in this year during the day.

Already working on it Penny.

Does anyone remember the Twin Rivers Festival that we used to have in Emporia? I say it's time to bring that back in some sort of Independence Day/4th of July event. It's going to take a lot of time, energy, money and volunteers, so keep that in mind when they start fund raising and asking for help.

I wonder if any of the people who use the carts and do not return them consider their actions STEALING because that is what they are doing. Guess what - those carts cost money and guess how those costs have to be covered when the grocery store has to send people on special trips to retrieve abandoned carts or buy new carts, that's right, cost of food goes up. Just my thoughts.

dhcc66,
I think you have a great idea - I think he should have to pay for everything it took to stop him. With Unleaded at $4/gallon and I have no idea what kind of price is on the fuel that went into the chopper, but he should certainly be paying for that as well. They made that lady who ran away in Georgia and claimed to have been kidnapped pay something back for the search, etc., so why not other criminals?

It amazes me that people think running from the cops and possibly avoiding a small ticket (in comparison to what he is facing now) is worth the risk of getting caught. I have to assume the people who run have something else to hide (like a loaded handgun or drugs, etc.), but what would have happened if he'd been speeding through town, run a light and hit another car and killed or injured any of those innocent passengers? When are people going to start considering the consequences of their actions before making such stupid decisions?

I agree with esuhornets. I don't think any athletes are given passing grades if they don't complete the work. In fact, I know of instances where professors were actually harder on the athletes and not as understanding when it came to them missing classes because of their game schedules. I know the baseball team misses a ton of Spring classes due to games and traveling, so it only makes sense that they would take as "easy" of a semester as they could during that time.

Do we really need to go out to the bars and count the number of non athletes and compare that to the athletes? C'mon, most college kids want to have a good time and many choose to go to the bars or drink, so if they are of age, who really cares?

So Sebelius realizes the importance of the private sector yet fails to back up her words with actions. The government sure makes it difficult for the private sector to hire good employees when government jobs are the ones with the best benefits, salaries, etc. Why? Because the government doesn't have to generate a profit, all they have to do is vote to raise taxes to get a raise or more vacation time or add more positions. I would love to see the government go to a private sector type model when it comes to that stuff and give people raises when they show ways to save money, cut costs, produce more, etc. If Sebelius really realizes how important the private sector is, maybe she should have given and paid for out of her own pocket (not the taxpayers) a day off from work like she gave all state employees. You know the world is screwed up big time when a job for the government is more appealing than one with a private business.

The other side to all this is how the tomato industry will fare. Spinach never came back after that situation and many companies went out of business, not because of something they did, but because of something outside of their control.

Here the FDA came out and said don't sell, buy or eat these tomatoes - even though they have still yet to 100% positively identify those products as the cause of the illnesses. Don't get me wrong - I think it's always best to error on the side of caution, but how about we figure out more preventative measures rather than constantly being in a reactive state?

Granted I don't know all the rules and regulations currently in place, so if someone does, feel free to educate me here.
