CEO explains reasons for cuts
We are lucky that the hospital is making a plan to keep from closing altogether...the economy has been hit hard all over, and the more people who can not afford to pay for urgent or emergency care must be devastating to the hospital. With insurances paying such a small percentage of the actual cost to provide care, all of our local healthcare providers are being hit hard. Preventative care has gone out the window, and now the sickest and least able to pay eventually make it to the hospital, and are not turned away.
The new administration is making some very hard decisions, and they are utilizing every resource available to ensure Emporia maintains and improves the health care available in our community. These decisions have not been made lightly, and there have been management changes and cuts.
If Emporia wants to have any type of hospital care available it is time to rally around the hospital, and offer support and concern for those directly affected. The hospital has a very strong core of dedicated, professional and caring staff and if we want those staff to continue to offer health care here,we need to support the hospital.

Or, was Dr. Barnett unable to back up his vague accusations with actual examples that would have involved a specific patient and/or staff member that would have made it appropriate for executive session?

Hospital board has its say
anonyamous1- It is my understanding that the hospital is self supporting and does not get any of our tax money.

Three new principals are named
As a parent of a child who has had Mr. Redeker as a teacher and a coach, and who has a student who will be in the sixth grade next year- I am thrilled!! The selection process is right on target. Great Job BOE.

Doctor criticizes hospital
I have had surgery, both inpatient and outpatient at Newman Hospital. I found the staff caring, the place clean and the service outstanding.
I have not found that same service when I try to see my Dr. in the office. Dr Barnett, it seems you are tired of being a doctor with all the time being a senator consumes- taking away from your actual practice of taking care of patients. How are you available when the hospital might need you when you are not available for your office patients? At least you used to have a nurse who knew us well, why did she leave? How long are you planning on being here even the little time that you are? Is it true that you have a residence in Kansas City and spend as much time there as here?
