Clarifications from Extension Office

Finally the voices of reason and common sense. I don't have a problem with bringing the issue to a vote, but I do have a problem with people not having sufficient knowledge to make an informed vote. After reading many of the recent posts, I have realised that in an effort to flex our voter muscle, something that is very valuable could get run over in the process. I grew up in the 4-H environment, learned many things the local schools didn't teach me. Our children were involved in 4-H through the Extension Office. The Extension Office is a great educational resource and tool for many subjects for youth and adults if folks will just use it. Don't back away from a yes vote just because of the scare tactics of a few.

Some county workers miffed by courthouse closures

I for one do not think the courthouse workers that got sent home should be paid for not working. If I get sent home for bad weather, I either have to burn vacation time or take it as time without pay. This is a no brainer....those workers should not be paid for not working. I pay my taxes, but I don't see me getting paid to not work. This is not a good financial decision on the county administration's part.

Hungry Kids

I also feel bad for the children. However, it is the parents who are irresponsible. Birth control is available at the health dept. for no cost or at least a very low cost. USE THIS SERVICE, PEOPLE. We have to STOP rewarding bad behavior with monetary handouts and having child after child is bad behavior when you can't afford it. I am a working taxpaying citizen and we stopped at 2 children because we couldn't afford more. We worked hard, saved our money, raised our children and put both through college with no help from state agencies

Fireworks go on sale Sunday

I'm just glad there won't be as much trash on our country roads as nomal, maybe. There haven't been any fields set afire lately, but people don't remember to pick up the trash when they are done and then our ditches look awful. We get tired of picking up after a few slobs. Glad to see this trial run and hopefully it will go well and folks will be able to continue to set off their fireworks in town.

Little Caesars franchise coming to downtown

I think the city establishment needs to get their act together. We are going all "nuts" over a business coming to town that will employ college age and high schoolers, probably a lot of them part-time. Don't get me wrong there is a need for this type employment. Also, the idea is good, pizza and movies, all in one stop.

That being said, our city leadership needs to get off their duff and work to keep businesses like Fanestils from leaving our community. Those are the folks that spend long term here in Emporia. Just my opinion, but in the balance of things, up to 80 solid full-time jobs out weighs a few full-time and part-time jobs at pizza place.

Olpe gets new sign

What is up with all you negative people? No wonder Emporia gets no where. At least Olpe is trying to stay an active community and not die like so many small communities have already done.

If Olpe and small communities that surround Emporia don't stay active and alive, people move away. Guess what, so do the spending dollars that come from Olpe Customers spent in Emporia.

If you want to compare spending on Olpe's sign and don't think it is necessary for a "Small Town", why was money wasted on the plain (and in my opinion, "ugly") clock tower by ESU. Clock Tower didn't add anything. At least the sign will advertise local businesses and events.

Get off our backs. You just sound like hypocrites. We are a proud community with lots of good people.

Respect, courtesy and recognition

We also had not attended a graduation for some time and found people to be very rude. Unfortunately, what we noticed was that when students of the hispanic culture were crossing the stage is when the horns were blaring. If they want to celebrate their child's graduation in this manner, it needs to be done at their private family celebration. There were very few other students that had horns blaring and annoying graduation goers. Also, don't try to say folks didn't know because the announcement not to use the air horns was made in both English and Spanish. They just chose to ignore it.

An unjust law

What part of "illegal" do people not understand in being in the USA illegally? I am a hardworking, taxpaying American citizen, have been all my life. I am tired of hearing about the "illegals" rights? What about mine? Maybe it sounds selfish, but the USA needs to take care of its own first. If folks want to come to the USA, let them come through the proper channels and become a tax paying citizen. Quit sucking the rest of us dry.

Going boom

I say let people shoot off their fireworks in town. At least that way I don't have to drive through all the trash on my way home on the county roads for a week. People seem to forget they have to clean up after the fun is over. This way the trash will be in the street in front of their own houses.

Vision of Victory

I think the Olpe girls are fantastic this year. I wish them the best of luck at State this week. My piece of advice to Coaches Nelson and Davis is this. If the girls are ahead in the 4th quarter, let them keep playing and scoring. Every time they play stall ball, the girls end up losing.

Good Luck Girls!! Take State!
