I also am not sure if this was accidental or on purpose, but it definetely could have started by a cigarette butt!!! The butt could have been tossed at anytime during the night or day before, so it really doesn't matter that the call came in at 6 a.m. There is alot more material in that flooring than just shredded tires. There could be chips of wood or sawdust from the building process recently, lots of small dust particles, leaves form the many surrounding trees. Also it says that the fire was just smoldering in a small area that gave off smoke, NOT a big fire burning out of control. It would not take much for a shredded truck tire to SMOLDER, if it had dust or leaves or anything else around it. You people need to be a little more open minded about fire. Its not like we are saying that you can put a cigarette butt on a tire and start a fire, but if you shred that tire up, add some oxygen in the right amount, through in some dust particle, saw dust, or leaves and throw in a cigarette butt, it wouldn't take much for it to start smoldering and get very hot. I do think that smoking should be banned there, as this is a public park in which small children are at, even if it is outside. You can save the smoking for the hour or 2 tops that you are going to be there. Just my Opinion.

It's people like you who are giving this shut down such a bad outlook. Instead of moving on and looking for a better job or god forbid move to a different city to provide for you and your new baby. You would just as soon go on welfare and live off the system. There are plenty of jobs in this world and as I hear Tyson is offering a relocation plan also. Like I said before, this is not the end of the world and instead of just giving up and going on welfare and being poor the rest of your life why don't you look for a new job and provide for you and your new family. And for the people saying this is coming from a person living in a 100k house and driving a 30k vehicle. Yes I have both but as a poster said earlier, I have learned the hard way and come from nothing to better myself and I now work three jobs and my wife works two to support our way of living. Life is all about the choices you make. Also I see a lot of these 30k vehicle in the Tyson parking lot. In fact the other day at wal-mart, I waited in line behind a person with a Tyson coat on paying with food stamps and then I went out to the parking lot and saw them getting into a brand new $40k vehicle. Tell me thats not about the choices people make.

Also everyone is making it sound like Emporia is going to go into a great depression and will not come out of it. THat's crap, Tyson has closed down in numerous cities most notably Norfolk, NE. Norfolk is about the same size of Emporia and the first year it closed down it hurt a little, but the next two years they flureshed and actually attracted two large industries to come to own because Tyson was gone. So yes it will hurt a little at first, but get real people, Tyson closing will not send us back to the dark ages. I do feel bad for all the families losing their primary income and for all the people who have worked there for many years and are just being told to pack up and get out. It doesn't seem right, but thats what this country is coming to, there is no such thing as job security. My thoughts go out to the paople who lost their jobs, but maybe this is a chance to get a better job or go back to college and better yourslef. Just keep your heads out of the sand and there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

I don't get all these people on here saying congratulations emporia you get what you want, and act like its the people of Emporia's fault Tyson is downsizing. The blame needs to fall on Tyson and Tyson alone!!! THey have paid low wages for years and have brought in everyone possible so they can pay less and less. They are the ones who have not updated the Emporia location knowing eventually they would close it down. They are a ruthless company who only see dollar signs in their eyes. Put blame where blame needs placed.

I'm wondering if this house had smoke detectors in it or if there is any agency that monitors these types of residencies to make sure they are up to code or not.

First off, Great job to the EPD officers. It takes a lot of guts and a different kind of person to run into a burning building to save anothers life. Someone you don't even know. So thank you and I commend you for your bravery. Yet as old soldier said, this very easily could have been a headline with 3 dead instead of just one. There are so many factors and variables that could go wrong inside of a burning building and even if you are trained to the extent of a firefighter you can't predict anything that will happen, especially if the fire is burning to the extent it was. So congrats on the save but also remember to check for safety on every scenario you get put in. Also it sounded like the ice rescue save earlier in the month could have had a tragic ending. If that ice breaks it is so freezing that it makes it hard to move and with all the extra things that a police officer has to wear including a bullet proof vest "if worn" it can be very hard to swim to get out. Just remember, at the end of the day safety and life preservation comes first. So be safe and once again great job on the save, I hope you get awarded for your duty to the city.

Whats not said here is that the women's dorm is supposed to be the Captain's dorm which means when there is a female firefighter on your shift the captain doesn't get his own dorm. Also it means that there can never be two females on the same shift. Also the Captain at station 2 doesn't even have his own office or computer. He has to share with everyone else and can't have private meetings or a private computer. No these aren't that big of things but its just a couple more small things to add to the list which in turn maked it all a bigger problem. Also every new station you go to every firegihter has his own dorm and bathroom which makes for some privacy, as some guys and gals snore really loud, or some got to bed really early, or some like it very cold in their bedroom, some like it hot, some like to listen to a radio, etc.. Like I said, not a huge problem but just something that needs to be reviewed. I have mixed emotions on bringing in a firm to do a study. In some ways it is good because you have an outside point of view and someone who is familiar with firestations around the world and on the other hand that is a lot of money to waste just for someone to tell you that you need to build new or rebuild.

Just wanted to reiterate, so there isn't any confusion that I am speaking on my personal opinion and am not representing the city or the fire department, and no I am not the person who is promoting this, thank god because I see I already have confused some people that think I have a threatening attitude. These are just the way I feel about my job and the city I live in and pay taxes in. Everyone is intitiled to their opinion and I do respect all of the posters opinions in this article because it atleast shows that people are interested in the subject and where their money is going.

All I'm saying is that all I ever read on here is how people are so sick of paying taxes and they keep rising, but prices on everything, everywhere are getting higher, which means in turn taxes are going to get higher. It seems ridiculous that when a small thing is gonna get cut from the budget like the funding for the city band or a position at the animal control office is gonna get cut, people come out of the woodwork to bring their reasons not to do it. Now when your hard working firefighters/emts are trying to get a new station, which doesn't have to be a state of the art station, people start complaining about tax money. We aren't asking for a 5 million dollar station here, just one we don't have to squuegee every day because the floors are unlevel and don't drain, or one we don't have to put all our kitchen bowls under ceiling tiles to catch rain water, or one that we don't have to move vehicles out of the way to go on a call, or a station without a mold problem so we aren't sick year round. Sorry if I seem too forward or in your face about it, but I am just passionate about the fire service and it seems like it is lacking a lot of city backing. It is funny how everyone thinks firefighters around here get paid 60 or 70 thousand a year and then you tell them what you really make and they laugh in your face and don't beleive you. I am not complaining about what we get paid because yes I did interview for the job and do know what it entails and I enjoy every minute of it, but it makes it a lot harder to do when the city doesn't back up its firefighters. Just my opinion, may not be the opinion of the whole department.

Most of these mowing orders are not going to the elderly who aren't in good health or the people who can't afford gas, it is going to all the houses that are sitting empty with the way the housing market is right now. I would venture a guess that 50% or more of the mowing orders are going to a house with a for sale sign in it or a house that is due to get forclosed. People don't care that it is making emporia look like a slum town. Also for the people that say they can't afford to mow, I bought the gas for my push mower last year and still have half of it left (it's only a 2.5 gallon can), and I mow atleast every week to week and a half. It doesn't cost a lot to mow a yard and mowers get good gas mileage and the big yards that take riding lawn mowers are not usually the problem when it comes to these mowing orders. To me, it's just part of having pride in your yard, your house, and your city, to keep it clean and looking decent. Like Emporian said, this $500 for not mowing your yard is more of a scare tactic than anything to get these people to mow their yards. I would think that taking maybe an hour tops and maybe $2-3 dollars to mow your yard would be a little easier on the pocket book than a $500 fine, if you do get the fine than it is no one's fault but yours.
