Agreed... change DOES take time to get used to. I hope that this smoking ban will INCLUDE the judges chambers which it is rumored the judges can still smoke in. I thought the WHOLE courthouse was smoke free. Sorry if this starts anything... but I also heard... again, most likely just rumor... that 26 votes were destroyed and that some votes that were included were from people who do NOT live inside the city limits of Emporia.

This really is getting out of control. EVERYTHING is bad for you - even some bottled waters are bad for you. Your tap water has chemicals in it, when you pump gas into your car and breathe the fumes you are inhaling dangerous chemicals. There ARE smoke free bars in town - if you don't want to smell the smoke while you are drinking then go to the bars that offer what you are looking for. There are MANY smoke free eating establishments in town and if the one you are wanting to eat at has a smoking area and that bothers you go to the smoke free one that offers the same foods - hello... we have MORE than one chinese place, mexican place, burger place, sandwich place. I remember a comment being made about a lawyers office being smokey - hello look in the phone book we have a large amount of lawyers to choose from also. There are choices for BOTH sides of the fence.
Somebody looking for a job HAS the choice whether or not to work in a smoking evironment - they don't HAVE to apply there or accept the job.
Be pro active in your own life and make the choices that you deem safe for you and your family.
This is just rediculous. If the smoking ban does go through.... seriously... are the non-smokers that don't frequent these establishments NOW going to START frequenting them more often? Doubt it!
I worry about the drunk driver swerving across the road at my vehicle. You want to save more lives CAE? Switch your cause and stand outside the bar and offer to be the DD.

This is all just crazy... employees not getting paid... doesn't matter who you are it's crazy... they have bills to pay too... and they don't all work FOR the government... I know when I used to work at the ESU library my paycheck was a government check (back when they only got paid once a month). What has ME upset is... for the first time in TEN years I don't OWE Kansas any money because I had extra money taken out of each paycheck specifically for State taxes. Each year I owed, if I couldn't pay on time... they didn't say "oh we understand you don't have the money...just pay us later" they said, "we'll just charge you interest until you get it all paid and if you don't pay it timely we'll garnish your wages" NOW?!?!? Are they gonna pay ME interest on the money they owe ME?

New faces in Newman's administration so let's give them the benefit of the doubt that we will see some changes in the near future. Only time will tell.

To answer the question as to if I voiced my concerns.... YOU BET I DID! I praised the nurses the same day, let the charge nurse on duty know my pleasures AND displeasures and called administration the very next day AND told our primary care physician who is active on the hospital board.

ER doctors have not been employees of NRH. That would be why, in the past, you got separate bills from Newmans' if you went from the ER to the hospital. Several years ago, when we had to use the ER, we actually got a bill from Emergency Room Doctors, Inc out of KC for the doctor all the other things done were billed through Newmans.
I think that if the doctors that worked the ER WERE Emporia doctors the care there might not seem so lacking at times.
In the last 2 years - we've utilized the ER 5 times - twice during the morning, once in the afternoon and twice at night. All the day time care was very good and quite efficient. The night time care... wonderful nurses... only a couple of patients... but took almost an HOUR for the doctor to even come in and visit with the patient. The first night of pain was contributed to....... tada..... no diagnosis.... an MRI and a try this to relieve the symptoms ($225 script - two doses). The second night (EARLY morning)... we had the pleasure of showing up 45 minutes before shift change..... the first doctor didn't even address the symptoms.... pain meds given to relieve the pain and they were ready to discharge.... again NO diagnosis.... (these two nights were consecutive weekend nights) I refused to leave until they had addressed all the symptoms........ what they did next didn't result in anything but more pain and orders to see family physician in the morning and pain meds from the NRH pharmacy to get through until then..... BUT the pain inflicted ACTUALLY saved a life because it actually made a tear in the skin which allowed a hidden infection to rear it's ugly head by the time we got to the doctor - WHICH resulted in a 4 day hospital stay on IV antibiotics. The infection was clearly seen on the MRI that was done upon being admitted to NRH. Hello? did they not read the MRI that was done in the ER less than 48 hours earlier? Dr. Hicks said, "this would've been noticable 3 days ago when the pain set in".
I can't help but think had the basic blood work been done on either night - some of this could have been avoided. BUT... I'm NOT a doctor and don't know for sure.
I try NOT to use the ER at all because the insurance company doesn't pay ANYTHING if it is not absolutely necessary. Understandingly because ER costs seem to be triple that of regular hospital care. THAT IS CRAZY!!!!
I've gotten off subject..... back to that.... in those 5 visits we saw 6 different doctors. 3 were wonderful!!!!!!!!! One being Dr. Warrick whom I know many felt was pretty crass but I was pleased with his care everytime I've ever dealt w/ him in the ER (he has retired since). The other 3 - I pretty much felt like we were a burden.

The facility was NOT closed due to poor performance - the owner of the business made this decision due to financial futures. The local hospital and older nursing homes have had low number for a while now and this hurts the bottom line. All nursing homes have their problems. Not ALL bedsores are preventable. The new administrator and new director of nursing have made AMAZING changes in the facility and should be commended. Nursing home survey information found online are generally 6 months to a year outdated - the ONLY way to KNOW a facility is to visit.
It really bothers me that people have focused on the WRONG area here - HELLO PEOPLE... some of these residents have lived there 20 years... and what about the staff - my word people staff members have lost their jobs right before Christmas.

Am I getting this correctly? The city commissioners are voting on this - NOT the people of Emporia? This is such a HUGE issue with everyone - I think that the registered voters of Emporia should be the ones voting on this. I think we would get a more clear picture on what the PEOPLE of Emporia want.

I have eaten there. The prices are reasonable and comparable to another well known Italian place. The food was good, as was the service. The only complaint I had was that it was NOISY and crowded. I don't remember Pizza Hut ever being that noisy, even on a busy night and I wondered why they hadn't utilized the lower level for overflow seating. The noise level was comparible to Chucky Cheese's the night we were there. I am sure, though, that as the newness wears off and the stream of clients slows down (there were about 10 families waiting in line at a time) this noise level will drop.
