Am I getting this correctly? The city commissioners are voting on this - NOT the people of Emporia? This is such a HUGE issue with everyone - I think that the registered voters of Emporia should be the ones voting on this. I think we would get a more clear picture on what the PEOPLE of Emporia want.

This is getting ridiculous!! People CHOOSE to work the jobs they work at by applying for them - no one FORCES them to choose those jobs. IF it is an issue of not qualifying for different jobs there ARE ways to take care of that. I worked in restaurants and bars through college - I LOVED THOSE JOBS!!!! I KNEW there was smoking in both of them - they fit my needs and, AGAIN, I loved those jobs!!!!
The question was raised earlier - what about the influx of non-smoking clients - wouldn't you like to be able to give ryan a raise? QUESTION FOR YOU NON-SMOKERS - do you all stay home and NOT go anywhere that there is smoke? HOW many of the non-smokers in Emporia, who do not visit a bar now and then, would start coming out on a regular basis? Let's get serious!!!!! I would venture a guess that 98% of the non-smokers who also drink at bars STILL go to the bars whether there is smoking or not.

I was quite disappointed when, after sitting and waiting for 45 minutes, my daughter and I heard on the radio that the parade was cancelled. There were a LOT of people waiting downtown for this parade.
I thought, well the weather is a strange reason to cancel the parade - I remember about 17 years ago that it was so cold and raining, during the Christmas parade that the street and sidewalks were slick. THAT didn't stop anyone from coming out and celebrating - it just brought out more vendors with hot chocolate. I have marched in parades with worse weather - MUCH worse.
Since my daughter didn't get to see the parade that her class had been talking about, we sat and talked about the reason for the parade. Her comment was... at 6 years old... I am glad that they fought for our freedom and I am sad for those that died. It is good to remember them all!
I, too, am thankful for all those that gave up a part of their lives and those that gave their lives to fight for this countries freedoms. Thank you to all of our service men and women!

Unfortunately the person who took the camera probably WON'T be reading the paper - BUT hopefully someone who knows them and sees that they aquired an expensive new digital camera within this timeline WILL and will have the morals to help them do the right thing. I grew up in a very small town - the kind where you left your front door unlocked all day and left your keys in your car, because you trusted your neighbors. THAT is one thing that I have always liked about Emporia, is that small town feel - but when things like this happen it brings you back to reality and makes you think twice. I do hope that you are one of the lucky ones who get your memories returned to you.

I totally understand this... we have tried tumbling, setting the dining room chairs up to hurdle AND as a volleyball net with a nerf ball. I am, however, VERY glad that my children are enjoying watching the olympics and getting excited for the US competitors.
There is ONE thing I have found VERY disappointing about the US competitors, and even my 6 yr. old noticed it, MOST of the US competitors DO NOT cover their heart and sing the national anthem when they are standing there proudly representing the US.

Now... let's address the issue of the mall. Yes.... our mall is a poor excuse for a mall. Parking close to the door is NOT a problem. There is a NICE big area where Food-4-Less used to be (BTW I MISS THAT STORE!!!!!) and would be a LOVELY place for a comparable and competing department store like Target. BUT..... from what I understand the building needs a LOT of work - some of that being asbestos removal (in part, part of the reason Dillion's did not take the building).
We DO need some bigger businesses in town that will create some jobs and revenue for this town. The OTHER thing that these businesses would create is some competing wages.
As for the comment about the other sides of town not being near the interstate - there is a NON pay 4 lane highway that MANY people travel on that runs right through the East side of town - how about we think about bringing some revenue BACK to the East side of Emporia.
There are sooooooooo many things that can be done and options to look at. I hope that the city takes all of these into consideration BEFORE they agree to it and NOT just go for the "quick fix". We DO need some revenue and different job choices - but we need to take a good hard look at what and where and utilize space that is already available.
The area in question (while it is the landowner's right to sell the land) it is ULTIMATELY up to the city whether to zone it for anything other than residential. This area is OVER congested and the congestion backs up all the way to the intersection at Eaglecrest Drive - sometimes getting out of Staples or otherwise (including WalMart) takes FOREVER!!!!!!
There was also a mention of utilizing the fairgrounds - bproth... if you did not see it... you contradicted yourself.... you said utilize the areas already available and then wanted to use the fairgrounds which would take as much development as any other open land space. BUT..... leave the fairgrounds alone..... it was DONATED for the purposes that it is used for and it is enjoyed by the residents of Emporia for many many purposes. The committee has spent their money nicely to improve on the appearance of the fairgrounds and it is very nice.
I'm sure that there will be much more discussion about this.
One of the questions I have is..... WHY the huge push for LOWE'S all these past few years? Is there someONE or select FEW that are going to benefit from THIS particular store?

OK.......... enough is enough..... Emporia needs SOMETHING! I'm not sure a national chain hardware store is the answer. WHY don't we look for a national chain of something that Emporia has VERY little of - like Petsmart for example (yes... I know... before someone says anything... we have A, just one, pet store - but he has a very faithful following and I believe that he would thrive).
Wal-Mart NEEDS some competition - has not ANYONE noticed that their prices just keep going UP - so much for the smiley man SLASHING prices.
I totally agree that we should use up some of the empty building areas. Demo of the Kmart/ Big Lots building would be great - it IS an eye sore and would be a prime location with ample parking for a new business.
New and different eating establishments would be nice - I'm not a seafood person but there are a lot of people who are and only have LJS to chose from, for primarily seafood. Hey, what about an Italian place - we don't have one since S'ghetti's isn't here anymore.
NOW to address this Dillions situation. bproth.... you need to check your facts a LITTLE better. Dillion's did NOT go out of business BECAUSE of WalMart. Dillion's closed because of poor timing. It was an issue of leases, signing and cost of fixing the building they WERE going to move in to. Dillion's had a VERY faithful following after the Superstore was finished - they still do... many faithful Dillion's patron drive to the East side of town just to go to Dillion's.
continued....

Why were these kids even out at that time of the day? Doesn't Emporia have a curfew and if not, why not?

The facility was NOT closed due to poor performance - the owner of the business made this decision due to financial futures. The local hospital and older nursing homes have had low number for a while now and this hurts the bottom line. All nursing homes have their problems. Not ALL bedsores are preventable. The new administrator and new director of nursing have made AMAZING changes in the facility and should be commended. Nursing home survey information found online are generally 6 months to a year outdated - the ONLY way to KNOW a facility is to visit.
It really bothers me that people have focused on the WRONG area here - HELLO PEOPLE... some of these residents have lived there 20 years... and what about the staff - my word people staff members have lost their jobs right before Christmas.
On Nursing home is closing
