Or yours... That's the point... We will never solve the problem unless the gazette requires it of everyone. Because although some people who provide their names the people who attack others on these blogs won't unless their are required.

Thanks Patrick! It is nice to see that someone is willing to stand up for the people so often attacked on these blogs. I'm all for a persons freedom of speech but these blogs seems to bring out the people in this town who are cruel and all to often racist. I wish that people posting on these blogs had to sign there names they same way you have to do when you send a letter to the editor. I think the people who attack others on these blogs are just plain cowards.
Also, I encourage you Patrick to advocate for name verification which is possible. The Lawrence world journal allows people to have their names verified. I think the same standards should be applied to comments on the blog as those used for letters to the editor.

The only question I have is, where is parking going to be for residents? That space seems tight as it is. There is going to need to be a parking lot to allow for the residents to have parking as well as customers of the businesses. I think the idea is great. Emporia needs some better apartments near campus. They just better make sure the rent price is going to be near the range around town. The apartments look nice though.

Well this week specifically Rep. Mast and Rep. Hill voted for an education bill which failed but would have decreased at risk funding for USD 253 by increasing the number of at risk students you have to have to qualify for full weighting and as students move out with Tyson closing education dollars are going to be very critical. Additionally both voted against an amendment to the math and science teachers incentive bill which would have had the state fund all day kindergarten which the district only gets half pay for and then voted for the bill. Those are just two examples of votes on the floor this week.

I think that this column is a very good idea, it is important for citizens of Emporia to know what their elected officials are actually doing in Topeka, but my questions is whether the column is written by a journalist in Topeka watching what is going on the floor or whether this is just bits and pieces submitted by the candidates. If it is the case that these are submitted by the candidates I would note that this is why they have news letters and that it would be more important for the citizens of Emporia to receive an objective view of what their elected officials are actually doing. For instance, the fact that both Rep. Mast and Rep. Hill voted for a bill this week that would dramatically reduce funding for Emporia's at risk population in USD 253. Or the fact that citizens of Kansas are most concerned with health care and Rep. Mast is half way through session and chairs a committee that is just now getting around to hearing health care policy suggestions that would make Kansas a healthier state. These suggestions came out well before session even began and she hasn't even taken an in depth look at the suggestions. It is her job as the chair of health and human services to address the health care concerns of the state of Kansas. I would again say I agree with the thought of this column I just feel it is lacking the investigation aspect of journalism. I have always felt that Emporia lacks a proper view of the elected officials which represent them, often times their elected official vote against the interests of the citizens of Emporia and those votes never make any news in Emporia.

You are ridiculous! You continue to attack John Sanderson who IS a veteran about a decision he made. If you read what Patrick wrote above it is clear that the call had to be made when the outlook was still bad. "When Emporia went to bed Monday night, the National Weather Service was forecasting strong winds and rain — sometimes heavy — Tuesday morning. Before dawn on Tuesday — WHEN THE DECISION HAD TO BE MADE — the weather still did not look promising."
Also Emporia's recent woes are not because of decisions that were made by John Sanderson. I'm not even sure what you mean by recent woes but if you mean the 4th of July be upset at YOUR elected officials on the city council who wouldn't pony up the money for the show. STOP attacking a veteran who is volunteering his time to coordinate his parade in honor of his and all of our veterans service. GROW UP and you know maybe... support our veterans... which is the whole point of this day.
