On Celebrations Planned Elsewhere

I also observed very small children outside playing during the warnings. As a member of a Disaster Preparedness Team of a large school district, I am more convinced than ever that the safest place for children during any disaster is at school. The district/schools work very hard to make sure all children will be safe in any distaster. Drills of all kinds are done throughout the year.

I have participated at school level and district level in organizing drills, participating, and being chairperson for disaster committees. I have taken each and every drill seriously including a real bomb threat received over the phone. My goal was to make sure all students, staff, parents, or visitors were in a safe place depending on the threat.

Why do some parents undermine the training these children receive at school by ignoring warnings?

Parents, please take warnings seriously, and encourage your children to do the same, especially when they hear the sirens. The people who set off the sirens as well as the weather forecasters, that some find annoying, are doing the job they were trained to do by warning residents of any danger that might harm them. Thank goodness there are people who do care for others safety.

Its obvious from what I observed, that some Emporians have not been through a deadly earthquake. Just think how many lives could be saved if only there was a warning available for earthquakes as there is for a tornado.

Thank you to those individuals who kept us informed of a possible disaster on Friday.

Gwen:

The error was in the school year. Article should read, for the 2008-2009 NOT 2007-2008 school year. That means they are registering for next year.

1) I have watched some of the commission meetings and watched while the commissioners tear apart staff members and ask questions that are way out of line and unprofessional - in my opinion. It makes me sad when I see how the city staff is being demeaned by the commissioners. It really doesn't make for good moral when you see how little the commissioners think of city staff. They (commissioners) are obviously feeling their power rather than supporting the people that do all the work with low wages. What's wrong with making the employees feel good about working for the city?

2) There are some things that can't be purchased by low ball bidding. Does anyone really check these bids out to make sure they are submitted by true professionals? Or, doesn't it really matter? Something is really wrong here!

Sounds like the bid selection procedures need to be looked at. Changes need to be made to make sure the lowest bid is indeed the best bid for the project/item. Doesn't take someone with a Ph.D. to know that the lowest bid can sometimes come back to haunt you. Now that I think about it, the Fire Station must have been given to the lowest bidder when it was built, look at what the city is dealing with now. Guess it wasn't the best bid!

lildarling,

I live in Emporia, have read the posts, and I would like to avoid this area all together. Do you really think La Hacienda, Casa Ramos, or Wheat State Grille are "hip" places that Fred from Virginia requested? Or, would these food establishments even know how to make a martini that Fred was asking about? How sad, how very sad! This whole town is sad!

Does the city take the "lowest bid" or the "lowest and best bid"? The lowest bid is not always the best bid. The cities I have worked for always indicated "lowest and best bid" on their bid specs and awards.

Why in the world should Clint Bowyer pay for his own sign when the town doesn’t show any support for him? I'm sure if he saw some support from Emporia fans, he would be the first to put money in the jar.

Having been a NASCAR fan for many years, I feel that Emporia is failing Clint Bowyer. We, as a city, should be taking pride in what this Emporia man has done. I have been to many NASCAR races across the US (Charlotte, Daytona, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Fontana) and have seen what towns do for these drivers. Signs on storefronts, liquor stores, restaurants, etc. Emporia has such an opportunity to show this great driver how very proud we are that he is from here. Remember, NASCAR is the #1 fan participation sport. 100,000 plus fans at any racetrack you go to. Oh what fun it is being stuck in the traffic before and especially after a race.

NASCAR fans, we need to stand up and let Clint know we are supporting him and are very proud of his accomplishments and hope that his dream comes true of winning a Championship - then Emporia will be on the map.

P.S. How about a bus going to the race track with the fans wearing a Clint Bowyer shirt or hat or both. How much fun would that be? Wouldn't that make Clint proud to be from Emporia, when he saw his hometown fans supporting him at the track?
