I think there are a lot of valuable points being made in these discussions that the prospect of Lowe's coming to town has brought up. But I still keep getting the feeling that in the end, it doesn't really matter what we, the citizens of Lyon County, really want. Money is the underlying factor here, something that most of us don't have enough of.

The report should have been made public information. I do believe it was the publics dollar that paid for this report so in all fairness, if I can go to the courthouse and pay for copies of other 'public record', I should also be able to get a copy of this report.

The location for this business has never made any sense to me. I do feel like it is a very unsafe area already with no need for more traffic congestion. I also don't understand how it can be alluring to anyone if you aren't supposed to be able to see it from 24th avenue. Besides, are the people in that area, with fairly new properties, planning on remodeling soon? Therefore making this an ideal location for the ones that 'might' be able to afford it. Face it, we are all watching where we spend our monies right now.

As far as Sutherlands goes, I've been frustrated many times that I have gone in there. Recently, the customer service I have received has been much better. Some of the kids working in the yard irritate the heck out of me but I'm also one of those people that refuses to accept some of the crap they load on my truck. I go over and pick out the lumber that I want, I'm the one that paid for it afterall. Sometimes you have to speak up for yourself instead of sitting around complaining about it to no one.

More dealerships in Emporia? I don't think so. The simple reason people go out of town is that the inventory here is lacking AND the main reason, it's way over-priced!! My daughter was looking to buy a new car and went to a dealership here. They didn't have the color she wanted and they didn't want to work with us on the financing. We drove 45 minutes to Topeka, got the exact car she wanted and paid $10,000 less than we would have paid here. A week after she bought the car, it had a mechanical issue and we were told to go ahead and take into the dealership here in Emporia to get it fixed, it was under warranty afterall with the auto maker. When we did that, we were told they would get to it when they had time and since we didn't buy the car from them, we would NOT be a priority nor would she receive a loaner vehicle. The dealership from Topeka came to Emporia, brought a loaner, took her car back and returned it after repair to our driveway. I'm sure you can figure out how I completed my customer survey that FORD sent to me afterwards. THAT is why people go out of town to buy a new vehicle.

On Missing information

FYI - Tyson will not close the plant because a union comes in. The plant will close because of the morons with impossible demands that are being fed a line of bull by the union reps and are choosing to believe it. The market is what it is but some people never got a lesson in economics. I personally wouldn't mind if Lowe's was to come to town, just to another part of town. However, even though people are speaking out against this location, money talks and that's who they are listening to.

Matt - You forgot too much drama! lol At least there was last time I came in a couple of weeks ago. The thing is, you're right, stay or go, it's still my choice! And I left because it was way past my bedtime!

On Public input on smoking ban

Posted on October 1 at 3:39 p.m.

It seems to me that the fundamental principle in this discussion is over a person's right or freedom to choose. I do smoke and I would agree with the smoking ban when it comes to restaurants, but not when it comes to a bar or tavern. I hate smoke when I am trying to eat and am courteous enough to believe most people feel this way. However, when I go to a bar and drink, I do want to be able to smoke. Many people I know that don't smoke will light up when they start drinking.

I'm sure I'm going to hear about this but....if I don't like country music, I choose not to go into a bar that plays it, same with Rap or HipHop. If I don't like football, I don't pay to watch a game or sit thru it on television. If I don't like Chinese food, I don't go to a Chinese restaurant. I can vote for whatever candidate I choose to or practice whatever religion I choose to. The point being, I am still free to make that choice, as are all of you. If a bar owner chooses to have a smoke-free establishment or not is their choice. Just as it is my choice whether I frequent that establishment or not. Also, I am choosing to suffer the consequences for my decisions, as is everyone in life. If I choose to commit a crime, I also choose to suffer the said consequences.

I also believe that with the state of the economy and the road Emporia is already going down, adding another strike against us would not be wise. Our lives are already dictated by so many things that we can't do anything about. The world is never going to be a perfect place but at least we still have the FREEDOM OF CHOICE to change those things within our abilities. By adding another law, we are just taking away another one of those freedoms.

I really enjoy reading all your comments on here. At least this election has made people think about things and actually look at the issues. I am still listening to both sides and am pretty sure who I will choose. The race issue and the 'woman factor' will not be one of my issues however. There are too many things at stake with this election and we should all be sure to get out and vote whoever our choice. This is our right and our duty and we should be glad we live in a country where we have this ability.

And Hogan77, didn't Obama make a statement about our '57 states?' Does that make him the better choice for President? We should all stick to the real issues, the ones that will affect our futures and maybe together we WILL make a change for our nation!

I have no problem with new business coming to town and bringing in more jobs. I don't really like the location that has been selected for this proposed area of development. What about the 30+ acres that is already commercially zoned and currently For Sale north of Safeway? What about the strip of land between Dolly and Graphic Arts Rd? If they don't want to use the existing land where Big Lots now sits, I'm sure there are other areas where these business' could build.

I, as a smoker, do see both sides to this discussion. I personally also try to be respectful of others and don't smoke in public places. I have to go outside at work, rain or shine, and I choose to go outside at my home. I don't like the smell that smoke leaves behind and can't stand to eat while others around me are smoking. That being said, I agree that this should be the business owners decision in most cases. I have no problem with all restaurants being non-smoking, I'm sure we can all take it outside or survive one hour without a cigarette while we enjoy a meal. I do, however, enjoy smoking when I go to a bar, be it only 2 to 3 times a year. I think most people know what they are getting into when they walk into a bar. You run the risk of getting a drink spilled on you, hearing a few choice words that aren't in your vocabulary, watching a public display of affection that would be better played out in privacy or possibly walking into a brawl that you never saw coming. My point is, it was your choice to be a patron in this establishment. I don't like Chinese food so I don't go into those restaurants. (I know, that's not a public health/safety issue, unless you get ahold of some bad sushi). Maybe a few more bar owners will make the switch and everyone will have more choices of where to spend their money. If nothing else, maybe more people will stay home and there will be a lot fewer drivers under the influence on the streets, which I do believe is a public health/safety issue. For now, I think our time and energy would be better served solving problems like providing affordable insurance for everyone, lowering the unemployment rate, seeing to it that everyone can afford a good education and for pete's sake, let's do something about those kids walking around with their jeans down to their knees.

EMPORIA - Please don't assume that EVERYONE on this board feels the same and is the voice of society. I value ALL teachers because I don't know ONE that got into the profession for the money! Please! If teachers didn't have to spend half their time teaching basic manners and morals to a percentage of their students, maybe they would have the time to focus on the actual educational structure and needs of ALL their students. If the administration didn't spend all of their time telling teachers how to do what they already know how to do, then maybe they could follow a curriculum that would benefit their students future needs and assure their success.

I know that people lead extremely busy lifestyles these days but if all parents would put forth as much energy into being involved in their childs' academic endeavors as they do in driving them to gymnastics, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc and sitting thru practices and worrying about whether they are the first picked on the team, then I don't think we would have any 'child left behind'. Don't get me wrong, athletics are an important part of a childs development and I'm all for it but unless you are raising the next Michael Jordan or Derek Jeter, then an education is the most the important thing you can give them! Think about it, if the doctor gives your child a prescription to get better but you don't make them take the medicine, how are they going to get better? Let's take a little responsibility for the success or failure of our children here.

I have known Alfonso and his family since they moved to Emporia and came to work at Tyson. He was a very friendly and hard working man who loved his family. My prayers go out to his family during this time. I will greatly miss my friend and our weekly chats.

I'm not really into the whole town hall meeting thing again but why not have a short survey available at the Court House where people have to go eventually to pay their taxes or get their tags. It could be inserted into the envelopes we get with our valuations and then returned by mail or when coming in to pay in person. I know some people accomplish this by paying on-line but it could be a starting point. I'm sure there is someone available at the Court House to tally the information and then the powers that be would have a REAL idea of what the taxpaying citizens of Lyon County want or DON'T want and it would only cost US the paper it was printed on. I know I personally go out of town for many items because they are cheaper and I enjoy the change of scenery, not to mention the variety of retail stores and restaurants. I would love it if I could go to Emporia and go to Best Buy, Old Navy or Olive Garden but the fact is, I CAN'T!!!!! I realize that we probably don't have the population to support a large amount of big business but I would like to have a better variety than what we do have.
