Another great editorial, Patrick! Locally-grown, organic food is now the standard, rather than just a passing fad, here in the Bay Area. Here are some online resources that may be of interest to your readers.

The public may not realize it but they can buy directly from local farmers. Even more will benefit when a group forms and individuals take turns (rotating schedule) dividing and delivering the produce to group members:

Restaurants and food markets can get “into the game,” too. These businesses benefit when they promote themselves as supporters of local farms, and vice versa. Of course, don’t expect large, national retailers to participate:

Best of luck. Go local and go organic whenever possible.

On The taste of home

"Lung cancer incidence and mortality increased in 18 states, most in the Midwest or South. These states generally have not passed anti-smoking laws, such as banning in public places or increasing excise taxes on cigarettes, said Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, lead author of the study at the American Cancer Society's Epidemiology and Surveillance Research Department."

More than the endorsement, I was impressed by Powell's commentary about the mistreatment of persons of the Muslim faith.

I have spent many hours as a volunteer at nursing homes. The story Powell shared about the Muslim-American who gave his life in the war, reminds me of a recent day when I visited Piedment Gardens in Oakland, Calif. I met a kind centenarian with an adorable appetite for laughter. She told me about her family, her education, her career. She also told me about her family having everything taken away from them and being imprisoned at Manzanar (http://www.nps.gov/manz/), simply because they of their Japanese heritage.

That was in 1942. It's unfortunate, more than sixty years later our nation has changed little. We still judge books upon their covers.

For Powell to take a stand against politics that serve only to spread hate rather than to unite, I feel he should be commended.

On Colin Powell’s quiet evaluation

Perhaps it is time for Emporians to reconsider a city commission that is divided by districts, not at-large as it currently stands.

Commissioners representing different areas of the city might not have voted in favor of this proposal had Mark II Lumber or Waters Hardware been in their district. Along the same line of thinking, a commissioner representing the eastern edge of Emporia near I-35 and Burlingame Road might have had a dissenting vote about this proposal since that area of towns needs an economic boost.

Equal representation.

I still say the best resolution to the debacles created and lingered over by Congress is to "flip the House." Specifically, if every American set aside the partisan leanings and voted for "the other guy/gal," Congress might become worthy of our admiration and praise.

(There is no pun towards the two U.S. Representatives I will refer to in this example.) If the voters in Kansas' 1st District were to elect the Democratic nominee over Jim Moran, and if the voters in California's 8th District voted for the Republican nominee over Nancy Pelosi, I think we would see a much more productive and conscientious House of Representatives. You have to admit, a Democrat from Kansas and a Republican from California are going to have much more in common than the current delegations. They will be less likely to engage in partisan politics/bickering and will cooperate for the common good of the nation.

As comedic as it may sound, just consider this proposal for one moment.

On A toxic confusion

I think both "open_eyes" and "goodoleboy" have made good points about geography. We do not live in swing states; you in Kansas (reliably red) or me in California (basically blue).

When I lived in Missouri, a swing state and the "Bellwhether State" of the nation, I found political conversations to be much more engaging because the exchange of ideas and opinions were much more balanced (i.e. both sides), detailed and less abrasive. This is due in great part with equal party registration between Republicans and Democrats, and a lot more independents.

Yet, do not only look at the big picture, specifically maps of the U.S. which only color-code the states. Take a look at those maps breaking down each state by county. More fascinating, as there it is easy to see the red enclaves in blue states and vice versa. Kansas is not entirely red, and California is not entirely blue. It is much more interesting to watch the opinions sway when you hold up a magnifying glass to each state.

I didn't get a chance to watch the second presidential debate. I'll just tune into the next episode of Saturday Night Live for a recap. :)
