Take it from a former "All-State" cross country runner (myself), it's legit. I don't know what else to tell you. Stanbrough isn't blowing smoke just because Jenna's his daughter. He had a squad of All-Staters on the boys side last year. Michaela Reynolds was an All-Stater as a junior even though she didn't win the title that year. Sheesh, it's not like he crowned her state champion or anything.

Really? You're really that concerned about this? As far as I know, it is a KSHSAA thing.

Um, Ralph, the term "All State" is appropriate here. As it goes in Kansas cross country, if you medal at the state meet, you are then considered an "All State runner". The top 20 runners make up the All State runners. So Coach Stanbrough wasn't just blowing smoke like you insinuated.

No tosie, it's you and people like you and create who are the problem. You haven't educated yourself on what TIF districts actually entail, and instead, you assume that it is some big government kick-back program designed to give companies unfair advantages in the market. That's not true. Slvrnblck described it best above: "All the TIF does is reroute their property taxes to help repay the costs of improving the streets and drainage etc. Lowes gets no benefit."

It's amazing. Some people are so against change that they don't educate themselves on the issues and instead argue for these allusions of problems that they've created in their heads. Then, when someone young like me suggests change, you blame me for being the problem because my views are different from yours.

Create:

I'm sorry, all I read in your post was, "Blah, blah, blah, I'm an old codger who can't accept change, you young whippersnapper."

For these "long-time businessmen" who have been here "forever," if they are any good, they'll figure out a way to stay in business. Instead of crying about how unfair this is, they'll go about their business by offering better service and friendlier attitudes, and they'll survive even if they can't exactly match the lower prices of these bigger businesses. People will still buy from local stores if they offer the intangibles that you can't get at the national stores. It's called having a little bit of business acumen.

This is great news. The fact that the developer was given the TIF district status is not as big a deal as some people are making it out to be. It's called capitalism, and in these sparse economic times, you all should be grateful ANY business is willing to take a chance on coming to Emporia. TIF districts happen everywhere, not just in Emporia, and they are a fantastic way of bringing in new businesses. As the child of an economic developer for a city in Kansas, I know TIF districts are not a bad thing. AND, for you people complaining that this development will hurt the local business (which I don't think it will), if it does, so what? Again, it's called capitalism.

As a young person (under 30) living in Emporia, I think it's about time this city did something to improve the quality of life in this town. When this Lowe's gets built and the ajoining restaurants and shops follow, I bet most of the people complaining here are some of the first to walk through the doors to patronize those places. Hypocrits.

My only question is: When does construction start?

The people who are against this development are the reason Emporia is a joke of a town. Developments like these are precisely what this town needs, and here's why: This town has done a poor job of catering to an economic base that has the potential to bring in a lot of money to what is otherwise an economic wasteland — the college students. Take a look at what Manhattan and Lawrence have done. They have developments going up all over the place to specifically cater to college students. BUT, they also have thriving downtown/business districts that cater to locally owned shops and restaurants. The two can thrive in the same town. It most definitely can happen. But the fact that Emporia has ignored the college student population as a source of income is a joke. College students have so much more expendable income now than they ever did, mainly because they have jobs (yes, jobs at Wal-Mart and Lowes and other"big-box" retailers), and they also have mommy and daddy's credit cards.

Developments like this will improve the quality of life in Emporia so that this town will actually be able to attract more manufacturing jobs that pay better. Businesses will not move to a wasteland like Emporia unless the quality of life improves, and it starts with developments like this one.

sowhat,
If you can provide me with a specific year where the gazette covered ALL road games the Legion teams played (which would be impossible, just so you know), then I will apologize. But until then, I maintain my stance that covering Legion road games would be an unreasonable thing to expect of the paper and its TWO PERSON sports staff. They don't even travel to cover Emporia High road games unless they're at state, so it's ridiculous to expect it for the Legion teams. But if you can prove it has happened before, and not just one specific instance, then I will eat my crow.

Bad coverage? Just what do you expect? I seem to remember every Legion home game covered this summer by the gazette, and you have the nerve to come on here and say these teams aren't covered enough? What do you expect? Do you actually think the gazette is going to send their reporters to road games during the summer to cover bad Legion baseball teams?

Check out most of the other papers in the state, and you'll find that they don't give two shakes about the Legion teams. You should be happy these teams get the coverage they get, you ungrateful snob.

Get a life. You sound like the parent of a kid who didn't get quoted enough in the paper.

Hey sux, who are you to come on here and question anyone else's ethics when you yourself have no problem slamming the paper and its reporters mercilessly, all from the anonymity of your computer screen. Perhaps before the Gazette publishes the name of its anonymous source for this story, you should out yourself first. Then we might all know the name behind the big words you throw about from the safety of your keyboard.
