Planners approve retail-residential building

Gorgeous! I can't wait to see it completed. I would have loved a loft in that location when I was a student.

Developers, neighbors disagree on zoning proposal

Ok, I am going to say one thing.

I grew up in exactly the fairy tale you are suggesting. My parents were the entrepreneurs who bought up old buildings downtown (not Emporia, another small town) renovated them and for my entire childhood ran one business or another. They did the city commision, mainstreet commitees, worked HARD. You know what it got us?

We never had a vacation besides a quick weekend trip. When you own your own business there is no such thing as a vacation!!

My parents missed out on a lot of us growing up. They worked long, long hours. They didn't go on out of town sports, music concerts, etc.

My mom missed out on 30 years of potential 401K match had she stayed working for an employer.

My goodness it sounds so rosy and romantic to just open up a cute little coffee shop!! How wonderful, how quaint. Hardly. My parents enjoyed what they were doing but it was hard hard work and a lot of sacrifices. If you think a walmart employee has low wage or low benefits let me show you what my mom took home all those years. My parents have a lot of regret now about missing out on so much and for what? So an old building can look quaint and special?

If you know so much about what this town needs, why don't you come and put your money where you mouth is. And until you have, I don't think we need your opinon any further.

I would love to see a Lowe's come to Emporia. The facts are that the other retailers in town are NOT doing a good job of meeting the needs of the locals. We did extensive renovations a year ago and it was so darn frustrating to HAVE to go out of town for items because sutherlands didn't carry it. In the case of our countertops, we just wanted plain ol' in stock laminate counters. I waited for weeks for them to get a new shipment because they didn't have the sizes I needed, and finally had to give up and spend my money in topeka at home depot. Sutherlands and Mark II are great for some things, but more often than not I would find their prices to be a lot higher, or items out of stock.

Brian, there is so much I want to say to you but I don't think you would hear me, so I won't waste my breath. I think you are far out of touch with this community.

Anonomom
(my family is supported by a paycheck that comes from Bentonville, AR. Hate Walmart all you want, but let me tell you that they have been HANDS DOWN the best company we have ever been with. )

Supporting the tax

OH MY!! Yeah, check out that link. Madelynn's owes something close to $100,000 in SALES TAX alone! What is going on down there? Also $50,000 in withholding taxes.

Emporia bus drivers place in competition

Cheri, Bobbi and Charles drove my daughter last year and all did a wonderful job. Congrats and keep up the good work! You all do a fantastic job and my daughter is going to miss you this next year!

City pool losing few days to weather

I agree! we lived in Emporia for 5 years and went maybe twice in that time. Our new town has a similar center and it costs MUCH less, I am finding we do go a lot more often because price isn't as much of an issue. Also several times we tried to go and they had closed early, or asked us to leave not long after we got there so they could close early. It was all around just a turn off.

Dog attack

Sadly we had to deal with a family with several outdoor only pitbulls for a couple years in our neighborhood. In that time a neighbors pet was destroyed by one, they frequently (as in several times a week) jumped the fence and roamed the neighborhood and were aggressive. When I called to report it I found that animal control is only available part time on certain days. If I called on a day they were not available, the police told me that UNTIL someone got hurt, they weren't coming. Nice, huh? It really is sad that in a town this size there aren't better protections. The whole thing was rediculous and until people in about a 2-3 block radius of this home started calling non stop for every little thing, nothing happened. Eventually they were removed, but again, it took years and organizing the neighborhood. It shouldn't be that hard, and people should be able to enjoy their own property without fear.

Attracting more doctors

I just want to comment that I have been so happy with the medical care in this community, and I am sad to be leaving it. Our family has appreciated Dr Kemp and his staff, Dr Milburn and his staff, Dr Detwiler and his staff, and especially Gina in the parenting center at Newman. I am sure there are many other wonderful medical staff we havent' come in contact with, but I have been so happy with the ones who cared for us all these years.

Large number of vandalism cases reported

Great. I would love to get my hands on these vandals. We lost a truck thanks to them in December. Sad that people have no respect for other people's hard earned property.
