Netloafer...Thank you for the update...I'll keep reading..and I'm looking for the information from the Gazette, as well.

On City debt

Posted on September 16 at 3:13 p.m.

Thanks Netloafer..We went to the City Hall in July and asked for this information, from several people..(I won't mention names, now)...but, no one seemed to have anything "available" for us.
I appreciate your efforts....If they are having e-mail problems..I have a FAX they can use :-) .

I just got a call from the city commission. The debt detail is available. They will be sending it to me, possibly as a PDF file.

I was also advised that the detail, including amortization schedule, is a matter of public record. I'm sure they will be advising where it can be viewed.

Will advise as soon as I get the detail.

NETLOAFER....This article was "buried".....Did you get the "debt detail" file yet????
I will keep this article alive on the board, because I think we should all know why the City debt for 2008 is almost 51 million.
If you have received the file, I hope you will post it here...IF you have not received it, maybe you need some help reminding your contact at the Commissioners office???
I won't let this article be buried again, because of lack of interest.

Good Grief...Whatever happened to someone just asking you not to smoke in their business, or home, or on their premises? How about asking restaurant owners to post if they are a smoking/non smoking restaurant?

Where does it stop?
What happened to common sense? I have never seen anyone smoking in a retail store.(I've been here a year and a half)....and, IF I don't want to go in a restaurant that allows smoking...I won't go!..My Choice!!!!!
But, when I have gone to restaurants that allow smoking, I see fewer and fewer people smoking.
I think society is figuring it out for themselves..We don't need a GROUP to tell us that the people of Emporia want the ban. Just let the people decide by their VOTE.
In the end, it probably won't matter anyway, because like in California, and Colorado... the individual towns can decide what they want for their community..but, eventually the State of Kansas will decide for us, and make us a non-smoking State.
Cigarettes ARE still legal!!!!

No offense to the Clean Air Group....I think you should BUTT OUT..(pun intended) ...and let the Voters decide.
That's why we fight for democracy!!!

On Group says Emporians want smoking ban

To Supernanny.. You can choose whether or not you want Smoking or Non Smoking rooms, when you travel.
If you have a pet, you can get accomadations that allow you to have your pet with you........These are CHOICES, you can make.

I think the problem is taking care of itself. I've lived in Emporia for a year and a half..and I have never seen anyone smoking in a store...and, there have been times I've been tempted to accept a seat in a smoking area in a restaurant, because no one was using it.
I seldem have seen anyone walking down the street smoking.

Last I heard, Cigarettes aren't illegal!!!!!!

I agree with Methusla...

"As a final comment I have never and never will try and impose my will or way of life on anyone, however I do expect some amount of respect for my not wanting to be around anyone who does smoke or businesses that allow smoking."

P.S.......Somewhere we read that Gwen Larson was going to do a series of articles about the Budget, and the expenditures this summer....I sent Gwen an e-mail (I believe it was in July)..asking her when it would be published...and I never received a reply.
Did anyone see it?
And, Gwen....Please let us know if this was a misunderstanding??? Did we miss them?
Thanks.

Good Luck Netloafer....You have more clout that my husband and I...We went to City Hall in July, when we questioned why we couldn't afford to have Fireworks in Emporia.......
I'm anxious to see if you get all the answers...We were told the information was "somewhere"...but not available at the time.
We didn't persue it...Thank you for being persistant.

LifeGoesOn..."Ditto" to everything you said. :-)...

I love WalMart, and I'll be first in line if we open a Target or a K-Mart.. My husband and I will be loyal to Sutherlands, because they have given us great customer service, but, even they don't have everything that a Lowes or Home Depot can offer Emporia.
If we want to grow as a community, keep our youth here, and bring in new families, and encourage the younger families we have now, to stay in Emporia, we'd better start making some changes... soon.
Of course, there are good changes, and bad changes, but, NO Change shouldn't be an option.
Just a side note....It's probably going to cost the taxpayers a bundle, in some cases, for new roads, and sewers, etc., but, I just saw we're already 50 million in debt in Emporia...so, what does it matter...we can't afford to live here now.

On Proposed Lowe's development

Posted on September 8 at 9:38 a.m.

I lived in a small town in Colorado, that passed a "partial" Smoking ban, a few years ago..The ban required that owners of Bars and Restaurants, partitian off Smoking sections, with many rules and regulations, that cost the owners huge expenses.
Within ONE year...The Government, made the State of Colorado, a NON-Smoking State. So, it didn't matter what the town wanted...or Voted for....the State was the decision maker.
I agree with you Create..and everyone against the ban...I think the Business Owners should be able to make the decision of whether or not they allow smoking in their establishment..and, let US, the people, make a decision as to whether we want to enter, or not.
I can live with that....because, in the end...our State Government is going to be the decision maker for us.

Create...I'll drop the remarks about the "leaving town" now...and, I still think it's ok to complain about something you don't like in our community, and not go to the Budget meetings.
Also, as far as my going to City Hall. It's one of those things that if you don't like something, and complain, you're told to stop complaining and, "do something"...If you tell anyone you tried to do something...you're accused of believing you're "better than other everyone else"...Sorta dam*ed if you do, and dam*ed if you don't" Don't you think?
I do know that you step forward when you believe in something Create. And, I think we agree to disagree on the fireworks.....
I remember Mr. Zimmerman informing us, after the panic when Tyson cut back, that Emporia wasn't in as terrible financial problems as some believed. That there was money to take care of some programs.
I realize Create, that, to some..the fireworks display, may be frivilous, but, if that were the case..then, we should allow people that wanted fireworks in our city..to have the the ordinence either lifted for this year...or over-turned...so they could purchase their own fireworks....AND, again...I think it would bring sales tax revenue to our City...(not just the County)
Smiles...on kids faces...are important...I don't know if you had fireworks, at home, when you were growing up. I remember the fun, and, the fun we had with our own kids and Grandkids.....I also understand how some people may be against them and others for them.
So, I would like to make sure this issue is on a ballot before next 4th of July, or our Commissioners can review it before then, and give us an answer.

On County will contribute to fireworks
