The only business owner I saw was the insurance guy. The rest look like city and county employees...

I don’t have a comment about the article as much as a comment about the comments. What are the comments about the Ethiopians taking our jobs? I have lived in Emporia for the last decade and I have seen Asian groups come and go, I have seen the Hispanic population grow, I have seen the Somalis come and go, I will even include the Philippines workers at the peak power plant, but I can not think of any Ethiopians. Could someone please tell me what they are referring to. Ralphhayes & raymasonite both refer to them and I am lost.
Oh as far as the election… ask me in November.

Midnight this is just political grandstanding at its finest. Davis waited until after the 4th so that he could look like the hero trying to support the fireworks display, but since it is to late to do anything about it this year he doesn’t actually have to do anything. If he really wanted to support the 4th he would have proposed this BEFORE the Holiday.
This way he gets the good PR and he didn’t have to do anything. It must be an election year for him.

What a nice story… It is refreshing to see good news in the paper and to see kids doing things to support the community.

Kids, Kids, Kids… I don’t know where all of hawk’s anger is coming from but I think jayhawker stated it best “the Sheriff (is) making a reasoned response to a real world problem that will save the taxpayers money and heartache.” I also agree with the comment about hiding in the shadows.
We likely all know someone that has, or is, working for one of the local law enforcement agencies. I talked to a guy that left the sheriffs department recently to go work for the state. Whenever I would talk to him he rarely ever complained about the sheriff, and often defended him. His only complaint was about a few of his coworkers. Instead he left because it was a move that was good for him. There is only so far that one can go in the local departments, and he had to go to the state level to advance his career. So there are many reasons why people quit, don’t assume that it is because of bad management.
With the election around the corner the sheriff should have a town hall style meeting where everyone that is “hiding in the shadows” could come and address the issues that they have. If they are not willing to make a comment to the sheriff’s face they shouldn’t make it on here.

Well I thought this was an interesting opinion so I decided to follow the link that was provided to gain a better understanding on ethanol. When I opened the factsaboutethanol website the first line says that “Factsaboutethanol.org is a Project of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a non-profit public policy organization dedicated to the principles of economic liberty and limited government.” So before I read what was on the website I thought I would check into the group behind the website, CEI.
On the CEI website they have numerous articles. One article talks about Al Gore and states that “Nearly every significant statement Gore makes regarding climate science and climate policy is either one sided, misleading, exaggerated, speculative or just plain wrong.” It went on to explain why global warming is just a myth and that it is not really happening. One of the articles that is featured is “Global Warming Gag Order-Senators to Exxon: Shut up, and pay up” This article talks about another article, that was in the Wall Street Journal, and says the Senators sent a letter to ExxonMobile telling the oil company to stop funding global warming deniers, of which CEI is proud to be a member of.
The articles themselves are rather boring and did not have a lot of substance to them except for the fact that CEI identifies themselves as one of the global warming deniers that ExxonMobil is funding.
Well at this point I decided to search other sites and try to find an unbiased source. Wikipedia.org had a page on CEI and it also said that ExxonMobil is a major contributor to CEI. It went on to say that the Koch Family Foundation, Texaco, and the Amoco Foundation are all contributors to CEI. With so many oil companies financially backing the website factsaboutethonal.org I don’t think it is any surprise when they say that ethanol is bad.
Unfortunately the internet is full of hundreds of sites and each site has its own hidden agenda so I was unable to decided for myself if ethanol is good or bad. But I would like to ask that everyone keeps an open mind and don’t just repeat facts that you find on the internet without doing some research on your own. As for me, I have decided that ethanol has a place in the energy market and will be around for a long time. But it will never be able to replace oil.

Zeus, why do you have a personal vendetta against the sheriff’s department? I am referring to your post below…

“I think almost everyone makes a good point however regarding law enforcement in this area the Emporia PD is understaffed and there are many officers who are burnt out due to a long list of issues. Remember also that this is not just an Emporia issue it is a Lyon County issue, where the heck is the Sheriff's Dept.”
One month you are complaining about the sheriff not being in town and a few months later you are complaining that they are in town. Maybe that deputy was trying to be responsive to the citizens concerns. In this case it was you complaining that the deputies are not in town more.

I wouldn’t mind this so much if they came right out and said that they wanted to make more money during the games. That is totally understandable; they have to be profitable to continue to operate. But to say they are concerned about marijuana brownies making it into the auditorium. Who really believes that this is really about a brownie making it into the auditorium. What this is really about are the dollars that don’t make it into the auditorium. Besides I have seen more obnoxious behavior from the drunks that come out of the second floor watering hole then from anyone that appeared to be having a bad reaction to a brownie.
I will still continue to go to the games regardless of the outcome. But the first time someone tries to search me I think I will have to turn around and leave.
Ed all that I ask is that you don’t pee on my leg and tell me that it is rain. Tell the truth and I think you will be surprised at how the people react.

The only thing I could think of is how embarrassing…
While Moe was trying to do his best Bobby Knight impersonation I felt a overwhelming sense of shame and embarrassment. It is amazing how one individual can embarrass a school, a town, and his own players without a second thought. If he had stopped after throwing his hissy fit on the court that would be easier to accept as an emotional coach or a lapse in judgment. But after walking down the court and knocking over stuff… that is unacceptable. I did not see the Stingers get hit by the Gatorade, but if they did moe should immediately apologize to them. And if he can find the time, he should apologize to the rest of us.
My point is I would not accept this behavior from a three year old so why should we accept it from a professional. President Lane has done a lot of good things in his short time at ESU, lets hope he removes this black eye. Would anyone else sign a petition to get moe out of here?
