Ashley, I raised a handful of children. And became attached to the things we used. But there were two or three things that I became terribly attached to, but were useless to me after the babies were no longer small.
The thought of selling them was beyond what I could do. I just couldn't, no way.
But then one day it struck me that there are parents out there who don't have the money or means to have some of the luxuries I had, and it was a shame to keep these items when someone else could use them, and would benefit from them.
I gave them to a group who gave things, for free, to very poor people. While I was at it, I donated a few other things too that I wasn't attached to. Lightened my load and brightened someone else's life.
I never once missed those things, and felt so good knowing that other people were getting comfort and benefit from those things I had treasured so much.
Donating treasured things once they're no longer useful to you to people who need them will give you far more feel good moments than the few dollars you could get for them.

This is incredibly sad. Isn't this the lady who lost a daughter last year, then recently sponsored a dance in her daughter's memory?
I hope these charges are merely bookkeeping errors.

Rbow, actually, I agree with you. When I talk about how I feel about it, I'm being honest. I'm not trying to change anything, just telling how I feel about it. Should I hide my feelings for some reason? You didn't. I don't see why I should.
As for prairie burning and bbqing, no, I wouldn't try to change those either. I did ask my neighbor if he would mind moving his bbq unit though, and he did and was glad to know. He was very accomodating. I didn't ask for much, in fact, he was good enough to do more than I asked. He's happy with his set up, and I'm more comfortable in my home. It's really that simple. Some people in this world are just really good, and he is.
Prairie burning is necessary, and I can stay inside my home with the windows shut. It does ruin part of the Spring for me, and that is just a simple fact, no whining, just the way it is.
Nothing is ever going to be perfect. We all live with the imperfections that we both get inflicted on us, and cause for others.

Truckingirl, I'm not making a fuss. I'm not pushing for non smoking establishments. I am aware that smoking has been a very long time thing in a lot of places.
But the fact is, I do not do well in smoke, not cigarette smoke, not the Spring prairie fires smoke, not bbq smoke that winds up in my house when the neighbor bbqs too close to my house.
I was simply wishing that smokers were more polite. To me it seems rude to smoke in an enclosed area.
Don't get defensive about it. You want to smoke wherever you want to smoke, period. I want to not breathe smoke. You are the one with the freedom to make the air unpleasant for others. So be it. I'm not going to fight you.
If ever the laws change, it'll make life just a tad more pleasant for me and my family. You can still smoke, just do it elsewhere if that happens. If those laws don't happen, then just keep on keeping on, do what you do and don't give anyone else a second thought.

Restaurants who allow smoking have lost our family business already. That's several people. They can do what they want, as things stand now. But I wish I had the freedom to go into some of the restaurants that I can't use now.
The gov't will hender the smoker's rights to smoke anyplace they please if this goes through.
But the smokers themselves are already hendering my right to move about as I please.
I wish that people were simply polite enough not to smoke in restaurants at all. Then this issue would be a moot point.
It isn't like anyone is keeping me from eating. I guess I would just like to be able to go to some places I can't go now. I'd like that freedom.

What would be done about traffic if a major store or stores go in there at Industrial and 24th. The traffic there along Industrial is already pretty bad. It will become unbearable, which will keep people from coming here.
24th going West isn't bad. Not much traffic and wider. Fewer people come from that direction. But 24th going East from there is narrow and winds. And more people use it. Imagine it getting even more busy. Could be a dangerous road if that happens.
There are multiple turns into businesses that already slow down the flow of traffic. Increase the traffic, and it will be a nightmare.
This needs to be thought out very well before putting anything in there. It might be an attractive spot for retail, but they need to address the traffic issues before they put in the stores.

There are people in the area who could provide wonderful entertainment. Frankly, I can go hear big name entertainment elsewhere. At the county fair we get to see the work of our local folks from animals to food to flowers to arts. I'd like to hear the music of locals as well. Let's be proud of what we have here.

Frankly, I thought the Norfolk article was encouraging. The refugees helped the town financially, and they all worked together to make it work. Yes, the schools and other systems should be notified so they can adjust as best as possible, but obviously they did it and it was pretty successful, until Tyson closed the plant.
As for people telling stories of encounters with Somalians. I have yet to have a problem. I hear about women being treated badly in WalMart, but they've been polite to me. My husband has never had a problem either. We've never witnessed a problem with any of them. I don't doubt some problems have happened. Culture issues can be sticky.
Don't forget though, crime was growing in Emporia before these people arrived. Can't blame it all on them.
These people are refugees. This country has always had an open door for people with great needs who will be killed in their own country. They need help.
Yes, get answers to questions, but don't close your mind to this situation perhaps working out beautifully, for everyone. As the children assimilate and socialize, that will also help.

Towne Crier: They are knowledgable and have signings, they draw people in. Just nice people!
L and L Pets: Good variety, terrific and accomodating owner, nice employees. Always a pleasure to shop there.
Bluestem: Variety, everyone there has a good attitude. They have things we can't find anyplace else. Popcorn on Saturdays. Why the popcorn is so important, I don't know, but I know I'd be disappointed if they stopped.
Bath and Body in the mall: Very helpful. I like their sales. I like that they carry some natural products. Good variety.

I don't get what Steve and Blackshirt are saying, or rather, why they are saying it.
The flu goes around every year. It is miserable and some people get very sick from it. My husband and I both caught pnemonia from having the flu one year.
But nobody wants to feel as sick as most of us feel with the flu. I hate it when someone comes to work sick and exposes the rest of us. I hate getting in line at the store and the checker is coughing and blowing her nose.
If the flu means little to you, fine. But PLEASE, stay home if you have the flu. Don't go to work, don't go to church, don't shop if someone else will shop for you. Stay away from people for the few days you are sick.
It isn't just this flu, but any flu. I'm not overly concerned about the H1N1 flu. It doesn't sound any worse than any other flu. I'm concerned about the flu of any name.
Just do your best not to spread it if you get it.
