Students build Apollo 13
Here's the website that the kids made, documenting their work and learning. https://sites.google.com/site/apollo1...
Since we just did this project the last couple days of school before break (instead of class parties?), the website's not totally finished. I do know a couple of kids have been working on it over break.
There was a lot of math, science, reading, writing, history, arts and music, and information literacy involved in this 2-day project. All staff was involved and all kids were involved. It helps that we run Project Based Learning in every class everyday, so these sorts of bigger projects aren't too overwhelming for us.
Thanks for your comments. Anyone interested in visiting the school can check out our official website: http://turningpointerriers.com

Writing is important
I wonder if the use of technology is truly to blame for low writing ability. The kids at TPLC are the most wired of any in the county, if not the state. They use tech tools seamlessly in their education.
I wonder if it's more of the non-educational use of tech that is creating the monster. I wonder if we integrated modern-day productivity tools into our educational system more we'd see a jump in skills overall.

School Trial a Success
WOW!
Thanks, guys but this is certainly NOT a one-woman show! Many people at the district, including John Heim and Susan Hernandez, as well as the USD 253 school board, and the people at ESSDACK actually are the ones who created and put into motion the original vision.
There have been many people working for the past 3 years (2 years before I signed on), getting this school off the ground, and we still have a LONG way to go before we relax!
Most kudoes should go to TPLC's parents who have decided to partner with the school to better their children's educational opportunties. All schools in Emporia would be as successful if every single parent chipped in as much as you all have to provide a well-rounded educational experience! We are truly an extended family, focused on children's individual needs and that's what has made all the difference!
