Christie project gets city approval

I am mystified after reading this, so much so that it is keeping me up at night. Have our city officials looked at a news article outside of Emporia recently, or even read the articles right beside the ones that mention their names????

Really? REALLY? Our city officals honestly believe that right now, at this moment- bareing the financial neck of the city before the big box store gods is the best decesion to make?

Just a few things-

1. Economic Depression- do you know what that is? Do you even know what that means?

2. Declining sales for the 2nd straight quarter (or is it third now?) in Realestate, Construction, and home remodeling.

3. Maybe, just maybe we should focus on incentives and programs for our LOCALLY OWNED stores whose profit margins are more likely to be reinvested in EMPORIA KANSAS not the Hamptons.

Getting Specific

There are many issues to consider when looking at these possible changes, but I would like to pose another view point.

To sell a house as a realtor, you must be licensed.
To inspect and/ or apraise a house, you must be licensed.
To insure or sell the insurance for a house you must be licensed.
To teach our children, licensed.
To cut, perm, style, etc... hair, licensed.
To practice medicine, Licensed.
To sell alcohol, licensed.

Do you see where I am going? It seems to me that when it comes to something like the shelter of my family, asking someone to be a licensed landlord, to prove to me that I can trust their services- it seems to just make sense.

Smoke-free needed

Just a friendly note- Any business, at any time can go "Smoke-Free". In fact, there are several businesses here in Emporia that are indeed "Smoke-Free". Business owner's rights are also a part of this conversation, or should be. They reserve the right to refuse service, and if they want to refuse to allow smoking inside their individual establishment, then I encourage them to do so.

Before we start making laws, just because they have in other cities; maybe we should stop and remember that we could simply request some of our more favorite places to hang out, dine, or frequent if they have thought about going "Smoke-Free". Just an idea.

Aquatic center has hard time breaking even

While I understand that hind sight is 20/20 and there are many things that may not have been the best way to spend money, best choice of location, etc. What is done is done. It serves no purpose to bring up the situations that can not be changed. However, we do have the opportunity as a community to try and find ways to improve our future.

In regards to the city pool, I think that better promotion is a key. Couldn’t the gazette work out a deal with the Recreation Department and advertise pool information once or twice a week. Wouldn’t it be awesome if parents knew the schedules for L-cat buses to the pool so that they could save on transportation?

As a community it would be so nice if we could focus or energy on the things that CAN be done instead of whining and complaining about what has already been done and can’t be changed now. You don’t like it, Vote! Educate other voters! Get involved in your city/ county/ state government. Encourage others to join you in a positive and constructive way. Having positive outlooks, ideas, and personalities goes a long way in the world of change.

Hospital officials discuss movie

Although these are all great issues to discuss I thought I would give you an FYI-

"Sicko" is actually focused on the fact that medical bills are the #1 cause of Middle Class Bankruptcy because Middle Class Families ARE Paying for insurance policies only to find out they don't cover a vast majority of accident/ emergency procedures.

Although Mr. Moore most definitely not unbiased in his pursuits, that does not mean he is not bringing up valid points that should be thought about, questioned, or discussed regardless of which side you stand on.

I encourage everyone to see the movie at some point, even if they do not agree with Mr. Moore's perspective.
