City buys retail study proposal

oh . .and the more I see how Julie Johnson votes . . . .not always mind you . . but a majority of the time. . . . I sure am awfully happy with her votes and what she has to say

City buys retail study proposal

well . . you know . . .for just a small portion of that $70K . . say maybe $15,000 . . .I can tell the city all they need to know.

We're not getting a Target. We're probably going to lose another grocery store or two in the next five years. We'll probably get at least one new pizza place if not two or three. The new turnpike entrance is going to be great for travelers and truckers but confuse the everloving snot out of most Emporians. The Kmart/Big Lots buildling will sit forever empty . .although it has flea market written all over it and the city commissioners will find more and more ways to spend money on studies such as this one.

I could just be guessing though . . . .

Sound off: Why shop locally?

Flips . .regarding the commission and your frustrations . .what are you the most upset about? or which multiple things if that's the case?

Zimmerman pitches $2.5 million of budget cuts to city commission

I would like to clarify some statements made by scarletfreebird regarding the city band budget.

I have been a member of the band for 14 years. For the last five I have served on the board of directors.

The $15,000 that the band receives yearly from the city does indeed pay for equipment and a small stipend for the band members.

However, the statement that most of the money is unused is incorrect.

The city band has an active roster of approximately 45 members. In addition we have a sub roster that adds around 15 or so more. But on any given concert there are roughly 45 members playing.

For 10 concerts plus weekly rehearsals, we pay each member a stipend based on how long they have been in the band. We also have a two member equipment crew that gets paid as well as our announcer. In addition, our conductor gets a slightly larger stipend as he has many additional hours invested in prepartion for each weeks concert.

The bulk of the $15,000 goes towards these stipends each year. There is not a large unused sum of money at the end of the year as was stated previously.

I am happy to answer questions via my email: csa@kkpsi.org

I hope that the City Commissioners will choose to continue to support the Municipal Band this year and in the future as well as the good people of Emporia have done in the past. Having this band with it's rich long history is a feather in the cap for Emporia. We are priviledged to have a band of this quality for as long as we have had it (the Municipal Band in it's current form has existed AND been funded by the City of Emporia since 1941) and I am proud to be a member.

again . .please feel free to email me with comments and/or questions

thank you
