Possible grant opens way for new ball fields

Ok, so let me see if I can get this right. The current condition of our parks and ballfields is pretty dire (actually downright terrible for the most part). So instead of spending quite a bit LESS money and repairing/maintaining what we already have and don't repair/maintain, we want to spend a bunch more $$$ in this crappy economy, tax the hell outta people already struggling and build a "NEW" complex then let the old existing fields go to hell? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? If we can get a grant to build new, why couldn't we get said grant to repair what is already in existance? I do not understand the mentality here !!! Am I missing something?

Lyon County Commission votes on joining Frontier Extension District

I would be willing to help in any way possible and I don't think 1200 signatures of Lyon County registered voters would be hard to obtain. Heck, take the petition to Steve's place, the VFW, Legion, and a few other bars in town and I think we could do it fairly easy.

Lyon County Commission votes on joining Frontier Extension District

Does anyone know? Has Walters or Martin voted NO on ANYTHING since they've been in office that involves spending or increasing taxes? Hell, I'm going to see about having the Lyon County Taxpayers subsidize me. 1/2 cent tax to help my standard of living. Maybe we should all petition for this. They vote against the wishes of the peple and do whatever they want anyway. Thanks Briggs for voting against this ! ! !

Lyon County Commission votes on joining Frontier Extension District

I am a registered voter and would GLADLY sign a petition to bring this to voters. I would also love to see a petition to get Walters the hell outta there!!!

ERC considers new fields

WOW, where to start...

I like to eat out, live in a nice, big, warm, comfortable house, drive a nicer, newer car, etc., etc. I'm sure we ALL do. What I'm having a very hard time understanding though is this...I was told earlier this week that my job in the local healthcare industry is probably going away soon (GREAT news this close to Christmas). If/when this happens, it means that my family will no longer be able to do many of the things we like. I don't have the option of asking for a handout (I guess I do, but I wont)the same way most of our local government does and it really ticks me off. My logical decision is to greatly reduce my spending ! ! ! I may have to sell my car, may lose my house, etc. I'd like to know where the hell Nelson and some of his buddies get off. We have EXISTING facilities (my kids use them often in the spring and summer). They could use some improvement, but lets try to figure out a way to use our existing city employees and purchase local materials (Shop Emporia First) to make these upgrades. PROVE to us how a brand new state of the art facility will improve the quality of life and generate enough income to pay for itself in a short period of time and I'll vote for it in a heartbeat, but I don't think that will happen. Common sense says when times are tough, pull in your roots and hunker down, get back on your feet, get your head back above water. I find it very difficult to believe this discussion is taking place right now, but then again my thoughts are taken back to the beautiful entrance rocks and how much income they have generated and how much pride they have instilled in our community <<insert sarcasim here>>.

Cemetery tour relives history of Council Grove's Early Citizens

Malique - you have definitly sparked some comments and got people thinking. I wasn't complaining about the progress, my complaint is that the carports they are putting up look VERY out of place in the neighborhood. At this point, they tie in with NOTHING around them and I thought they were restoring the Broadview to be historically correct from the outside. Car ports don't look very historic. I am not against progress at all. I LOVE what Mallon and his group are doing with the old Lowther building in the same area. They have already really dressed it up considerably.

Cemetery tour relives history of Council Grove's Early Citizens

This is somewhat off the subject, but I didn't know where else to start and speaking of history...
I thought the Broadview Towers was on the National Register of Historic Places, and if it's not, are the Lowther buildings? Reason for my question is, who/what is allowing the glorified car ports to be built over the old parking lot and old Broadview 66 gas station. They look like crap and do not fit in with ANY of the area around it. I don't recall anything mentioned about putting up covered parking for the residents, just that a parking lot was going to be made. I'm all for progress, but ...

Again sorry for posting this here, if someone can direct me to another place to post it, I will gladly move it.

Help on the way at 12th and Graphic Arts

Because of an engineering blunder and a high price for the land needed to correct the mistake, Graphic Arts was re-configured in a way that would not allow for safe left turns from 12th and 15th.

I'd like to know why the city didn't just TAKE the land as they have many other times...or could it possibly be because the land belongs to some of the "Emporia Elite"?

Just something to ponder

Mayor wants term limits for advisory boards

Is this Nelson's way of getting people off the Rec Board that has made him look like the idiot he is recently? Maybe we should consider limiting the term of commissioners and the mayor as well, that would be a way to force new blood on the commission too. Heck that would help us get rid of Nelson AND Kessler !

Italian Food!

Ordered takeout from there tonight. We figured with it being brand new it would be busy so thought taking it home might be the best option. Was told when I called the order in it would be 30-40 min, so I left our house after 30 and drove downtown. Stood inside at a counter where I assume you wait to be seated if dining in for 10 min and had several wait people look at me, then got tired of standing there and went to the bar. Stood there another 10-15 min before anyone addressed me. Once someone finally asked if they could help, I wated at least another 15-20 additional min before my food was finally brough out, needless to say I was not at all pleased with the service and almost left without my food. I realize that the place is brand new and there are bugs to work out, but terrible service is a big part of what put the last place out of business. Maybe the Gazette should have waited to print this article until they were open for a few weeks and had some of the kinks worked out. So, I got home and was very please to see the food steaming hot (my experience with takeout is it often is not). The food looked and smelled delicious. I was VERY pleased when I took my first bite! While the service needs much work, the food was AWESOME!!! We will definitly go back, but will probably wait until they've had a chance to get their systems in order. I really hope this place makes it. Emporia needs another nice sit-down place to eat with good service and reasonable prices.
