Scott Rochat
Call Scott at 620-342-4805.
Regular readers of the “Rochat, Can You See?” Tuesday column probably feel they know Scott Rochat far too well already. For those just joining in, Scott and his wife, Heather, are Colorado transplants, first arriving in Kansas in 1998.
Scott started his flatlander life at the Garden City Telegram, where he acquired several valuable survival skills, including how to drive on high-wind days (defined as any day with a sunrise), how to plan six-hour road trips home, and how to tell visitors that the evening Eau de Feedlot was really “The Smell of Money.”
Scott and Heather came to Emporia in August 2000, just a week before the longest stretch of 100-degree days in recent memory. Naturally, their electricity hadn’t been turned on yet.
In their six years here, the two have come to know and love the Flint Hills region. Scott knew they had a winner on the drive down, when Heather stared at the rolling landscape and declared “It’s green!” Seeing their first fireflies here sealed the deal.
The two have no kids but do have a nearly 4-year-old dog named Duchess who is smarter than any dog has a right to be. Their longtime parakeet Rocky, who was a big fan of Scott's piano music, died last December.
Regular readers will know that Heather has struggled with a number of chronic illnesses, including Crohn’s, ankylosing spondylitis, possible lupus and several others. Despite this, she is three-quarters finished with a degree at Emporia State University and hopes to complete it sometime this century.
Scott’s own interests run to reading of any sort (especially science fiction and history), computer games and hopelessly rooting for Colorado sports teams. He is also an active actor-director-board member in the Community Theatre of Emporia and has written a few children’s plays for the group.
Scott welcomes e-mails, letters and gratuitous compliments.
