Last week the Gazette published a story about Kansas Agriculture Secretary Dale Rodman who is seeking a waiver from the federal government that would allow companies to hire illegal immigrants. Rodman is getting pressure from large dairies and feedlots in the state who are desperate for workers.

Candy on Parade
Last week the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce sent out parade entry forms for the 34th Annual Christmas Parade. The deadline to get an entry into the parade is Nov. 4, and the parade will take place Nov. 29. The event typically attracts more than 300 entries and more 3,000 people attend, making it one of Emporia’s most popular events.

Dump your junk for free
Two years ago our community was extremely successful with a community-wide clean up called Clean Sweep. The event spanned four weekends, involved hundreds of volunteers and the efforts removed more than 550 tons of trash from the community.
Friday Thoughts
This week our sports editor Sam Wilson had a wildlife encounter at the paper. Monday night, Sam was at the office by himself and heard a noise in a nearby office. He went to investigate. Keeping a safe distance, he noticed something flapping its wings, but it couldn’t fly.
