The People Speak

We value our readers’ opinions on the news. Most letters received are published, but publication cannot be guaranteed.

Letters to “The People Speak” may be e-mailed to news@emporia.com; faxed to 342-8108; mailed to The EmporiaGazette, Drawer C, Emporia, KS 66801. or click here to submit a letter online.

Letters must be no longer than 300 words. Because letters are published as space is available on the editorial page, shorter letters tend to be published sooner. The Gazette does not publish anonymous letters. All letters must be signed (or include the writer’s name, if emailed) and include a complete address and a daytime telephone number. The Gazette does not publish letters about purely personal matters, libelous material or poetry.

The Gazette reserves the right to refuse any letter as well as edit letters for length, grammar, spelling and sense.

For more information, call 342-4805, or e-mail news@emporia.com.

Almanac (Page 2)

“About Town” is a column of short local news items of general interest. “Agendas” is a column of planned meetings. Both are published as needed.

The “Births” column, listing births and adoptions, is published on Wednesday and Saturday. “Good Causes” is published on Thursday and promotes events that collect money or goods for charitable purposes. Items for each of those columns are due in The Gazette office one full day before the day of publication.

Birth announcements should be submitted on a form available at The Gazette Office, 517 Merchant St., and at Newman Regional Health. Other items may be submitted by email at news@emporia.com; by fax at 342-8108; or by mail to The Emporia Gazette, Drawer C, Emporia, KS 66801.

All news items must include the name, address and daytime telephone number of the person submitting the item.

Engagements, Weddings and Anniversaries

Simplify your wedding plans by picking up a free Bridal Packet at The Emporia Gazette, 517 Merchant St. The packets include forms for engagement and wedding announcements, a copy of The Gazette’s annual bridal special section and coupons and offers from Emporia merchants.

The deadline for engagement announcements is noon Monday for publication in Saturday’s Gazette. Engagement announcements will not be accepted any later than four weeks before the scheduled wedding. The deadline for wedding announcements is noon Monday for publication in Saturday’s Gazette. The Gazette usually will not accept wedding announcements later than eight weeks after the wedding.

Forms are also available at The Gazette for wedding anniversaries. The Gazette publishes notices of milestone anniversaries — 25th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 65th and 70th. The deadline for anniversaries is noon Tuesday for Monday publication.

Photographs for engagements, weddings and anniversaries may be black-and-white or color, no smaller than wallet size and no larger that 8 inches by 10 inches. The photos can be submitted as prints or on disc at The Gazette office or be e-mailed to news@emporia.com. However they are submitted, photos must be accompanied by full identification and contact information.

When possible, The Gazette publishes two photos with each anniversary — a new photo of the couple and a photo of the couple taken around the time of their wedding.

The Gazette may reject any photograph the photo editor considers unsuitable for publication.

Photos may be picked up at The Gazette office within two months after publication. Photos accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope wil be returned by mail.

Our Town, Our Towns

Our Town, published on Monday, includes community news from Emporia — reunions, graduations, academic honors and such. Our Towns, published on Tuesday, carries the same news for surrounding communities from Burlington to Cedar Point and Council Grove to Hamilton. The deadlines for the pages are, respectively, noon Tuesday and noon Wednesday. Items may be emailed to news@emporia.com; faxed to 342-8108; or mailed to The Emporia Gazette, Drawer C, Emporia, KS 66801.

Obituaries

One of the standard services provided by funeral homes is seeing that obituary information is sent to newspapers. If no funeral home is involved, The Gazette will accept obituary information from family members who have sufficient proof of a death.

For information on the obituary policy, email obits@emporia.com or call the newsroom at 342-4805.

Sports

The Gazette encourages coaches to submit scores and information from all levels of competition — from rec league on up.

Coaches are asked to fax competition results to The Gazette at (620) 342-8108. This can be as simple as copying the scorebook from a game and faxing the pages. Please provide correct spellings of all players' names (both first and last).

We also know that many parents and students take their cameras to games. You're welcome to submit team and game photos for consideration for use. Please provide us with the names of all identifiable people in the photos.

If you have questions, call the sports department at (620) 342-4805 or e-mail sports@emporiagazette.com.
