Bumpy streets

I think that the streets are bad near Walnut school. I think that we should start a donations basket to fix them.

There are so many bumps, the streets can hurt the cars that come down them. It also might be uncomfortable for the elderly people in their cars. We seriously should consider redoing some of the streets.

It's not that the streets are bad per se, it's the way motorists drive - way above the speed limit, especially at 9th and West. People run stop signs, park too many of their cars on the street, etc. Too bad there aren't enough police around to catch the speeders and get the vans off the street. Life would be appreciably better. The bumps are bad only if you hit them at 40 mph not the 30 or 20 mph limits.

I don't have any real problems driving around Emporia, but then I have good shocks and unaltered suspension. I also try to observe speed limits and any temporary conditions that may require a slower speed. Emporia's traffic enforcement is a joke, but I think that may be intentionable as the City Council doesn't seem to support the idea of cameras (or other technologically advanced forms of enforcement) to assist in enforcement of public safety regulations.

the traffic on the side streets near walnut goes too fast during school hours, theres needs to be cops writing tickets in that area instead of writing tickets in the walmart parking lot.

Technological tools have been shot down by the Council for various reasons, but I don't recall that being cited.

If you believe cost to be a major issue, I, for one, could settle for strategically placed speed bumps near schools, parks and paralleling the railroad tracks. My concern is safety over convenience.

Like most city and county general fund budgets - the bulk goes to personnel. Let's see a story on who makes what (without names)..did the salary study do that? That's where our dollars go.

Get rid of the zoo, golf course, library, swimming pool, industrial development and half the parks and there will be money to do this

Studies I have read indicate that revenue can be raised by effective traffic enforcement programs, as they promote safety. The drivers around here are as bad as in Egypt (pretty bad) and I know I would like to see more enforcement. Speed bumps, used with other positive controls, would move some of the traffic into corridors and the police could then strategically locate their assets to catch the drivers who refuse to comply with the safety laws. The kids would be safer, and so would walkers and cyclists. Heck, run new sidewalk down to the zoo and memorial, organize some walking events, keep 'em safe from bad drivers and maybe we could all be healthier and enjoy the Kansas weather.

I completely agree with the young man who has brought this to everyone's attention. I live on Walnut street and the streets, no matter how fast you travel, are HORRIBLE!! I drive less than 20 mph due to the number of children that live on the street in addition to all of the school kids who attend Walnut School. The streets need to be repaired, period! If people are worried about the reckless driving, which happens all of the time, regardless the condition of streets, then maybe an officer should be patrolling that area on a daily basis. Either way, something needs to be done. Isn't the City of Emporia responsible for repairing streets, etc????
