One of Emporia’s newest restaurants is set to open soon and promises an authentic, affordable dining experience.
Peking Express, 728 E. 12th Ave., is in the building formerly occupied by the Ayan Cafe, the Somali restaurant that closed earlier this year. Haomiao Yu is a partner with Xiang Liu in Peking Express. Yu lives in Emporia, while Liu operates restaurants in Independence, Mo., Yu said.
Yu said Peking Express will serve affordable, fine Chinese food. She said she expects the restaurant to be open sometime this month. This week, workers were finishing the interior.
“We put a lot of money for the inside construction,” Yu said. “We remodeled everything and bought everything new.”
The red and blue sign that marks the building was purchased and shipped out of New York, Yu said. The kitchen equipment and furniture also were purchased in New York. The trim that was being installed on the inside of the building this week was imported from China.
Yu said Peking Express will have a large menu with all-day specials and six pages of dishes to choose among, from egg rolls and Chinese donuts through all the traditional Chinese restaurant dishes and several combination platters.
Yu said the prices will be affordable. There will be discounts and coupons with purchases over $20.
“It’s the best opportunity for international students to go out to eat,” Yu said. “We have all-day specials, good stuff and (affordable) prices.”

Big fan of Lo Mein and Kung Pao here. Gimme roasted red peppers!..... I remember when it was Mexican- none of the older folks could pronounce the menu.Taco was spelled out "Taco (tah-coh)" for you. Us kids enjoyed listening to Grandma reading the menu board out loud, and snickered behind her back.

Good luck to this new place; can't wait to try it out. I hope your Lo Mein noodles are the right kind. Some keep substituting with American style noodles and it just doesn't work as well. I'd love them to have Dim Sum. I have wonderful and vivid memories of China Town in Honolulu where Dim Sum is served every morning at 11. The sights, the smells, the sounds of clanging pots and several languages being spoken all at the same time...oh my, now I'm hungry!!!
I wonder why they bought equipment, furniture, and the sign in New York?
