Stout, Martell set school records at Council Grove

It was a big day for Madison sophomore Morgan Stout and her teammate, Ashley Martell, at the Council Grove Invitational track and field meet on April 17.

Stout and Martell each set new school records in different events, with Stout setting two new marks while Martell claimed one school record.

Stout’s records came in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She won the 100 in a school-record time of 12.78 seconds, then finished second in the 200 in a time of 26.82 seconds, also setting a new school-best mark.

Stout also placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 3 3/4 inches and placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 4-10 to lead the area placers in each event.

Martell set her school record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 8-6.

Stout and Martell led the way for the Madison girls, who finished second as a team with 115 points behind the team champion, Council Grove (135). Other area girls squads competing were: Olpe, third with 88 points; Northern Heights, fourth with 75 points; and Chase County, eighth with 17 points.

On the boys side, the top area team finisher was Northern Heights, which came in fourth with 51 points. Clay Center won the boys title with 135 points. Other area boys teams competing were: Madison, fifth with 48 points; Olpe, sixth with 47 points; and Chase County, tied for eighth with 28 points.

The other top finishes on the girls side for Madison came from Tera Titus and Malacie Bybee. Titus won the discus with a throw of 102-2, while Bybee placed second in the 100 hurdles in a time of 18.57 seconds.

The Olpe girls came away with five events champions.

Kelsey Camien won the 800-meter run (2:38.74), Katelyn Henderson won the 3,200-meter run (12:21.96), Natalie Kuhlmann took the 300-meter hurdles title (53.78 seconds), Megan Woods took the shot put title (35-7 3/4) and the 4x800 relay team of Camien, Kathryn Flott, Henderson and Sharon Zeller placed first in a time of 10:26.66.

Olpe also had the top area finishes in three other events. Flott took second in the 400-meter dash (1:05.74), Katie Moyer was third in the javelin (101-9) and the 4x400 team of Camien, Jill Cole, Henderson and Kandice Schreiner placed second (4:38.98).

Northern Heights’ Kaylee Eklund took the final area title on the girls side, winning the long jump with a leap of 14-9 1/2. Heights’ 4x100 team of Eklund, Desiree Hicks, Jenny Karr and Jessica Dhority placed second (55.03 seconds) and Chase County’s Julie Dorneker finished second in the 1,600-meter run (5:47.18) to round out the top area girls placers.

On the boys side, the Heights boys were led by field athlete David Hanks. Hanks won Heights’ only title on the boys side with a discus throw of 146-5, and he also produced the area’s best finish in the shot put with a throw of 44-9.

Pete Symmonds turned in a pair of fourth-place finishes for Heights, running the 800 in a time of 2:13.22 and the 1,600 in a time of 5:05.40. The Heights boys also turned in the top area performance in the 4x100 relay, as the quartet of Nathan Campbell, Tyler McClellan, Nick Mendez and Joel Young placed fifth (49.06 seconds).

Chase County’s Alec Wold had a strong day, winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.60 seconds while finishing second in the 100 in a time of 11.47 seconds.

The Madison boys got a pair of event titles from Ben Dains and Henry Ott. Dains won the pole vault with a clearance of 11 feet, while Ott won the javelin with a toss of 162-5. William Childers turned in the best area showing in the 110-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish (20.23 seconds), while Caleb Rathke placed fifth in the high jump (5-8).

The final area title of the day on the boys side went to Olpe’s Luke Miller, who won the long jump with a leap of 19-4. Miller also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.71 seconds.

Bradley Argabright turned in a pair of top-five individual finishes, placing fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.99 seconds) and coming in fifth in the triple jump (37-6). Colby Nuessen came in fifth in the 3,200-meter run (11:49.33).

Olpe also got two second-place finishes in the relays, as the 4x400 team of Argabright, Josh Klumpe, Miller and Trey Stead finished in a time of 3:45.49 while the 4x800 squad of Argabright, Ethan Hall, Stead and Miller came in with a time of 8:43.04, rounding out the top area placers.
