Shooting death appears accidental

Saturday, March 22, 2008

One person has been taken into custody in the shooting death of an Emporia man on Friday night, and the shooting appears to have been an accident, Lyon County Undersheriff Richard Old said Saturday.

Alfonso Barajas, 50, died at Newman Regional Health after being transported there with a gunshot wound. County deputies and the county ambulance service responded to a call about the shooting in the 1400 block of E. Logan Ave. at 8:07 p.m. Friday, according to a news release and the department activity log.

Old said the indication he had received was that Barajas knew the person who shot him.

"I don't really think there's going to be much to it," he said. "It was simply an accident. They seem to happen with some regularity."

Old said an autopsy was scheduled to be performed today.

"I'm confident it'll be several weeks before they can get the final report on that," he said. "We ought to know in a day or two, probably not before Tuesday or Wednesday next week, what the preliminary is on it."

I have known Alfonso and his family since they moved to Emporia and came to work at Tyson. He was a very friendly and hard working man who loved his family. My prayers go out to his family during this time. I will greatly miss my friend and our weekly chats.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family during this time of need. My daughter and I know this family and are very sad that something so tragic has happened. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
